Deepika Padukone is heard to have hiked her remuneration to Rs 12 cr.

The leggy lass of Bollywood, is currently the uncrowned queen of Indian cinema. With successive blockbusters in her kitty, Deepika is now set to test her luck in Hollywood with the latest film in Vin Deisel’s ‘xXx’ series. Given her demand, Deepika must have decided to hike her remuneration to astonishing Rs 12 cr, which is higher than several medium range Bollywood heroes’ pay.

Deepika has already signed Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next film ‘Padmavati’ and she is in talks to star opposite SRK in Anand L Rai’s ‘Dwarf’. She seems to be quoting 12 cr for these two films as well. It is also heard that makers, who wanted to rope her in, are now looking for alternatives as Deepika is strict about her pay.

Baahubali 2 Makes Mockery of Kabali Record

kab bahu

After Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ broke the records set by ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, now it is the turn of ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ to break the records set by ‘Kabali’.

A month ago, ‘Kabali’ set the record in Kerala for a non-Malayalam film after its rights were acquired for Rs 7.5 Cr. Now, Baahubali 2 has comfortably crossed this mark after Global United movies, a noted film distribution company in Kerala, acquired the film’s rights by shelling out Rs 10.5 Cr, the highest for a non-Malayalam film.

Baahubali 2 made a mockery of Kabali record as the latter’s record did not last for even a month. Not just in Kerala but in almost every circuit except Tamil Nadu, Baahubali 2 is expected to beat Kabali pre-release business and set new benchmarks for other South Indian films. The shooting of Baahubali 2 is currently underway at Ramoji Film City.

Jakkanna Movie Review

Share

Story:

Ganesh/Jakkanna (Sunil) is a young lad who believes that one should go any extent for those who helped him. He puts those words in deeds all of the time. One day, he happens to go to Vishakapatnam where he meets and falls in love with Sahasra (Mannara Chopra). And then he is on a mission to get hold of Bhairaagi (Kabir Dulhan Singh), a monster who creates terror in Vizag, even though nobody saw him. Jakkanna manages to bring him out, but at the scene of confrontation, something unexpected happens. What happens next and how it impacts the story is the rest.

Performances:

Sunil is good in the role of Jakkanna/Ganesh. His comedy timing and that dialogue delivery are his strengths from the days as a comedian. Even though the charm on his face is lost, the remaining abilities are intact. He almost walked through the role effortlessly. Mannara Chopra is all in for glamour in the film where she is the best. She could not even give proper lip movement in sync with the dubbing. Nagineedu is good as always. Kabir Dulhan Singh is an exact fit as a baddie. Sapthagiri track is entertaining at the start but got boring later. 30 years Industry Prudhvi rocked the show as Kattappa. Remaining comedians – Chitram Sreenu, Raghu Karumanchi, Satya, Raja Ravindra, Posani are okay.

Technical Performances:

Vamsi Krishna Akella directed a flop film called Raksha in 2008 and this is a sort of comeback for him. He came up with a routine story and embedded it with forcible comedy which worked in parts. Dialogues are also good but at some places, got overboard due to those extra efforts for rhyming. The first half is good in parts with a good interval bang which creates some excitement. The second half is again a disappointment with entertainment dipping. But then 30 Years Prudhvi as Kattappa brought back it on track. The climax is once more predictable.

Songs composed by Dinesh, have nothing but the glamour fest by Mannara Chopra. The background score is also okay in parts. Ram Prasad’s Camera work is good and colourful with bright colours. Senior Editor MR Varma could have been a lot better. Action choreography by Kanal Kannan is good while Production Values are appropriate.

Plus Points:

Clean Entertainer
Screenplay
Climax

Minus Points:

Slow paced
Predictability

Final Say:

Jakkanna is another routine comedy film from Sunil. It is slightly better from his previous films but still suffers from all that old problems like forcible comedy, mindless punch dialogues, etc. It has to be seen how the film sustains at the box office.

Obama ‘passes the baton’ to Hillary

Share

hillari,obama

Barack Obama summoned the charisma and oratory that catapulted him to the White House eight years ago, to enthuse the country to rally behind Hillary Clinton on Wednesday night. Her victory in the November presidential election is essential, not only for the completion of the agenda that he has set in motion, but also for the protection of American values and democracy, Mr. Obama said at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

After being in office for eight years, Mr. Obama’s popularity remains high at 49 per cent approval ratings. Health care, gay rights, climate change, gun control, immigration reforms – Mr. Obama pushed the promises he made before the convention in 2008. Sometimes making progress, sometimes failing. “Change is never easy, and never quick; that we wouldn’t meet all of our challenges in one term, or one presidency, or even in one lifetime.…Yes, we’ve still got more work to do,” Mr. Obama said.

Against African-American President

In an election that Mr. Trump and other GOP leaders frame as the last opportunity to overturn the legacy of the first African-American President of America, the stakes are high for all supporters of Mr. Obama and him personally. The GOP derides the prospects of a Clinton presidency as a third term for Mr. Obama; for the Democrats and Mr. Obama’s supporters that is a promise and even a lifeline. Mr. Obama’s endorsement of Ms. Clinton hinged on that premise of continuity.

“America, you’ve vindicated that hope these past eight years. And now I’m ready to pass the baton,” he said, concluding a 75-minute speech which reenacted the slogans and sentiments from 2008 that elected the first African-American President of the U.S. He called the country to rally behind who could be its first woman president – Hillary Clinton.

Crowd says “Yes, we can”

“And tonight, I ask you to do for Hillary Clinton what you did for me.” “Yes, we can,” the crowd chanted. “…there has never been a man or a woman — not me, not Bill, nobody — more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as President of the United States of America,” said Mr. Obama.

But there is more at stake than his legacy, Mr. Obama warned, comparing the politics of the Republican candidate Mr. Trump to fascism and Islamism. “…if you’re serious about our democracy, you can’t afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue,” the President said, as several delegates kept their ‘No TPP’ placards up throughout hit speech. “….anyone who threatens our values, whether fascists or communists or jihadists or homegrown demagogues, will always fail in the end,” Mr. Obama said.

Scathing attack

“We don’t look to be ruled,” Mr. Obama said, in his most scathing attack on Mr. Trump, naming him several times. “He’s betting that if he scares enough people, he might score just enough votes to win this election,” the President said. “America isn’t about “yes, he will.” It’s about “yes, we can.”

“Don’t boo, vote,” Mr. Obama said when the audience booed at the mention of Mr. Trump. Democratic strategists are concerned that the youth and the African-American voters may not be as enthusiastic as they were for Mr. Obama and the President specifically addressed the supporters of Bernie Sanders. “So if you agree that there’s too much inequality in our economy and too much money in our politics, we all need to be as vocal and as organized and as persistent as Bernie Sanders supporters have been during this election. We all need to get out and vote for Democrats up and down the ticket, and then hold them accountable until they get the job done.” “not just for a President, but for mayors, and sheriffs, and state’s attorneys, and state legislators.”

Olympic torch riot deepens Rio Games woes

Share

olampic

A riot during the Olympic torch relay on Thursday cast a shadow over the Rio Games starting in just over a week, marking a new low in a ritual that was meant to unite Brazil. The torch is nearing the end of a 300-city relay that will end with the lighting of the Olympic flame in the Maracana stadium at the opening ceremony on August 5.But while organisers portray the epic journey as a chance to ignite public enthusiasm, repeated security incidents have turned the torch into a symbol of the organizational glitches and social discontent overshadowing South America’s first Olympics.

‘Torch put out’

In Angra dos Reis, a coastal resort south of Rio, crowds angry over lack of public transport and nearly bankrupt Rio state’s late payment of salaries fought with police at the torch parade late on Wednesday. Video broadcast on Globo television and amateur footage shared on social media showed a dense crowd cheering while someone shouted “the torch has been put out!” The torch bearer, accompanied by police, is seen retreating to a bus, with the relay apparently halted. In other scenes, police fire rubber bullets and tear gas as the crowd runs and gathers again to confront officers.

This came after repeated attempts in other cities to douse the torch with fire extinguishers or buckets of water.Highlight reels of other torch mishaps have gone viral online, including runners falling over, a police motorbike crashing into the parade, a man attempting to seize the torch, and political protests. In June, a rare, captive jaguar — the same animal chosen for Brazil’s Olympic mascot — was shot dead after escaping handlers at a torch ceremony.

Athletes arrive

There was better news for Rio organisers in the arrival overnight of Jamaica’s Olympic sprint superstar Usain Bolt, who hopes to defend his multiple gold medals.A more controversial set of arrivals were expected later in the day, with some 70 Russian athletes due to fly in at around 6:00 pm (2100 GMT), their team slashed by bans in a scandal over state-sponsored doping.Rio organisers were also still racing to complete emergency repairs to the athletes’ Village, where some 19,000 team members will live. — AFP

Xiaomi rolls out first laptop to take on Lenovo, Apple

Share

The laptop Mi Notebook Air, runs on Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system, sells for 4,999 yuan (around $749 ) for a 13.3-inch display.A slimmed-down version for office use is also available for 3,499 yuan. The laptop is priced at a discount compared to many models with similar specifications from leading brands such as Lenovo, Dell, HP and Apple. It is the Beijing-based firm’s latest attempt to press ahead with its strategy of releasing top-spec devices at low prices.

“Xiaomi will continue to roll out budget devices with key components in the same league as those on premium devices,” Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun said during product launch in Beijing. The company also launched a new phone under its budget smartphone line RedMi. The RedMi Pro is powered by MediaTeK’s flagship processor Helio X25 and sells for between 1,499 and 1,999 yuan depending on specifications.Xiaomi’s chief domestic rival, Huawei, rolled out a tablet computer with Windows 10 and a detachable keyboard earlier this year.

Global PC shipments have declined for seven consecutive quarters as of the second quarter this year, according to tech consultancy Gartner.Lenovo, the world’s top PC maker, reported a drop in shipments of 2.2 per cent in the second quarter, while Apple, ranked fifth, posted a 4.9-per cent drop in the same period. On the Chinese mainland, shipments slid 6.4 per cent as a slowing economy bit into demand for PCs by both businesses and consumers, Gartner said.

Analysts have attributed part of the decline in the PC market to a shift to tablet computers that can handle productivity needs.Devices such as the Microsoft Surface tablet and Apple’s iPad Pro have sought to replace PCs for consumers who seek a combination of productivity and mobility, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. While its China release is scheduled for August 2, Xiaomi has yet to announce details about the availability of its laptop elsewhere.

Huawei has been selling its Matebook tablet in Europe as well as China and other emerging markets. Both companies face hurdles in selling consumer electronic devices in the United States. While Xiaomi has continued to push forward its strategy of packing impressive specs into budget devices, Huawei has sought to create premium products for higher margins.

iPhone 7, 7 Plus pre-orders, release date revealed? Popular tipster pins down exact dates

Apple is celebrating the success of selling one billion iPhones, but the upcoming iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are still a hot topic for fans around the world. While it is a common knowledge that new iPhones will be launched in September, a popular mobile tipster has revealed the exact dates when the 2016 flagships would be launched, when the pre-order would start and when the devices would go on sale.

Evan Blass (@evleaks) tipped the netizens about a confirmed information he received regarding the pre-orders of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. According to Blass, pre-orders date is set for Sept. 9 ahead of the devices’ launch on Sept. 16. But the launch date is different from the actual event where Apple will showcase the new iPhones for the first time and it is expected to take place on Sept. 6, a day after Labor Day, according to MacRumors.

Considering last year’s practice, the new dates for the iPhone 7 launch, pre-orders and sale seem reasonable. As usual Apple hasn’t confirmed anything on the matter. Last year, Apple had launched the iPhone 6s series on Sept. 9, started accepting pre-orders on Sept. 12 and released it on Sept. 25.

Apple iPhone 7 launch event date: Sept. 6, 2016

Apple iPhone 7 pre-orders: Sept. 9, 2016

Apple iPhone 7 sale: Sept. 16, 2016

Other than the release date conflicts, there have been several rumours about iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices. According to a recent report, which cited sources in the supply chain in China, Apple might name its new series of iPhones as iPhone 6SE this year. The reason behind this is the minimal design iteration.

Rumours suggest the new iPhones will come in two variants with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes. So far, we have learnt that the upcoming iPhones will ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, feature bigger batteries, double storage and RAM, A10 processor and water-proof certification. Since there is no confirmation from the maker itself, nothing is concrete just yet.
