Tollywood Q1 2026: One Blockbuster, Many Disappointments

The first quarter of 2026 has wrapped up, and it has been a mixed phase for Tollywood. In just three months, over 40 films hit the screens, but when it comes to solid box office success, only one film truly stood tall — Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, starring Chiranjeevi. The film emerged as the lone blockbuster of the quarter.
Sankranthi Sentiment Continues
A curious trend seems to be repeating in Tollywood over the past few years. Big-ticket Sankranthi releases arrive with massive expectations but fail to fully deliver. Films like Guntur Kaaram (2024), Game Changer (2025), and this year’s The Raja Saab followed a similar pattern — strong hype, but not the expected box office explosion.
However, January still remained a strong month overall. Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu dominated the season as a clear blockbuster. Meanwhile, Anaganaga Oka Raju performed reasonably well and secured a hit status. Despite production hurdles like reshoots, a heroine change, and budget escalation, the film managed decent returns.
February Turns Disappointing
Unlike its usual track record, February failed to deliver even a single success this year. Traditionally considered a favorable month with films like DJ Tillu, Uppena, and Bheeshma finding success in previous years, 2026 broke that sentiment completely.
Adding to the disappointment, Funky turned out to be a major setback, further dampening the month’s performance.
March Delivers a Shock
March didn’t offer much relief either. The biggest shock came with Ustaad Bhagat Singh, starring Pawan Kalyan and directed by Harish Shankar. Despite huge expectations, the film ended up as a flop, surprising both fans and trade circles.
The only saving grace for the month was Dhurandhar 2. Though a dubbed film, it managed to pull decent collections and is continuing its run steadily in theatres.
Overall First Quarter Report
In summary, the first quarter of 2026 delivered one clear blockbuster in Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, while Anaganaga Oka Raju and Nari Nari Naduma Murari emerged as hits.
On the flip side, films like The Raja Saab, Funky, and Ustaad Bhagat Singh came as major disappointments. Meanwhile, Couple Friendly, though not a box office success, gained appreciation as a well-made film.
Overall, Tollywood’s first quarter offered a blend of one mega blockbuster, a few decent hits, and a couple of unexpected setbacks, setting a cautious tone for the rest of the year.
Prabhas Busy Schedule May Delay Fauji and Spirit Releases

Actor Prabhas is currently balancing multiple big-budget projects, and his packed schedule is likely to impact the release timelines of his upcoming films.
Following the progress of The Raja Saab, Prabhas shifted his focus to two major films — Fauji, directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, and Spirit, helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. He recently wrapped up an important shooting schedule for Fauji in March before taking a short break abroad.
The actor is expected to return to Hyderabad soon and resume work on Kalki 2, directed by Nag Ashwin. With three high-profile films progressing simultaneously, managing dates and coordinating with multiple teams is becoming increasingly challenging.
Due to this tight scheduling, there is growing speculation about possible delays. Fauji, which is currently eyeing a Dasara 2026 release, might get pushed to December 2026. If that happens, Spirit could also shift from its planned March 2027 release.
Both films are reportedly planned with a strategic gap of at least six months between their releases, making their timelines closely linked. Any delay in one project is likely to have a ripple effect on the other, adding further complexity to Prabhas’ already busy lineup.
Malavika Nair Focuses on Meaningful Roles Over Opportunities

Actress Malavika Nair, known for her selective film choices, has made it clear that she prioritizes quality over quantity and is not someone who actively chases opportunities in the industry.
Currently awaiting the release of her upcoming film Biker, which is scheduled for paid premieres on April 2, Malavika has high expectations from the project. She describes it as India’s first motocross-based film and promises audiences a thrilling theatrical experience.
Talking about her co-star Sharwanand, Malavika shared an interesting similarity between them. She revealed that both of them are introverts, which initially limited their interactions. However, they grew closer during the film’s promotional activities. She also praised Sharwanand, calling him a fine actor.
Malavika acknowledged that her introverted nature might keep her away from regular industry networking, but she remains unfazed by it. She expressed satisfaction with the way her career has evolved so far and reiterated her focus on taking up meaningful roles rather than increasing the number of projects.
“I am happy with how my career has shaped up. I look forward to doing more meaningful roles in the future,” she said, adding that she does not worry about constantly securing new opportunities.
Ram Charan’s Statement Fuels ‘Peddi’ Release Confusion

Ram Charan has added a new layer of intrigue to the ongoing speculation surrounding the release of Peddi. While the makers have been targeting an April 30 release, recent industry buzz has hinted at a possible postponement, with some distributors reportedly being asked to stay prepared for a delay.
Amid this uncertainty, Ram Charan made a notable remark during a recent interaction that has sparked further curiosity. When the team of Raakaasaa met him on the sets of Peddi as part of their promotions, the actor appreciated their efforts and wished them success.
In the same conversation, Ram Charan addressed the delay rumors directly, urging them to counter the speculation. “There are rumors about Peddi getting postponed. Please spread the word that it is not getting delayed,” he reportedly said.
However, his statement has only added to the confusion. While he clearly dismissed the delay rumors, ongoing industry chatter continues to suggest otherwise.
With mixed signals emerging, the big question remains—will Peddi release as planned on April 30, or is a postponement still on the cards? For now, the uncertainty around the film’s release date continues to be a major talking point.
Naidu Warns TDP MLAs Amid Aravind Babu Protest Row

N. Chandrababu Naidu, TDP president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, has once again expressed concern over the behavior of some party MLAs, who continue to draw criticism for their high-handed attitude towards officials despite repeated warnings.
Reports suggest that instances of unruly conduct by TDP legislators are increasingly reaching the Chief Minister’s office, affecting the party’s public image. Even media outlets often seen as supportive of the party have reportedly flagged these issues, but there appears to be little change on the ground.
Naidu made indirect remarks on the issue while speaking at a pension distribution programme in Vinjamuru, Nellore district. Without naming anyone initially, he noted that “some people are losing patience these days” and hinted that exposure to certain television and crime-based content might be influencing such behavior.
His comments were widely seen as a reference to the controversy involving Narasaraopet MLA Chadalawada Aravind Babu, whose protest at the Palnadu district Superintendent of Police (SP) office has sparked widespread debate.
The incident unfolded when the MLA staged a protest over the non-approval of a candidate he had recommended for the post of district police legal advisor. He reportedly remained inside the SP office for nearly 10 hours, insisting that the appointment be finalized.
During the standoff, he is said to have argued with officials and escalated the situation by locking himself inside a bathroom, refusing to come out until the order was issued. Senior officials, including IG Sarvashrestha Tripathi, and other leaders attempted to resolve the situation, but initial efforts were unsuccessful.
The deadlock was eventually resolved after assurances were given that the appointment process would be completed within 24 hours. Following this, the MLA left the premises late in the evening.
The episode has since become a major talking point in Andhra Pradesh, raising concerns about the conduct of elected representatives and putting the spotlight back on internal discipline within the TDP.

Vijaya Shanti’s Remarks Stir Congress Over Telangana Promises
Senior actress-turned-politician Vijaya Shanti has once again found herself in the spotlight, this time for her outspoken remarks in the Telangana Legislative Council that stirred a political debate within her own party, the Indian National Congress.
For a long time, Vijaya Shanti has remained relatively inactive in public political discourse, with little visibility regarding her role in the party or her contributions as an MLC. However, she recently made headlines by questioning her own party’s government over the delay in fulfilling promises made to Telangana movement activists and martyrs.
During her speech, she raised concerns about the lack of progress in implementing key assurances given during the formation of Telangana. Highlighting that it has been over two years since Congress came to power in the state, she asked when the long-pending commitments would finally be addressed.
Vijaya Shanti emphasized that activists and families of martyrs, who played a crucial role in the Telangana statehood movement, are still awaiting proper recognition and support. She pointed out promises such as ₹25,000 monthly pensions for martyr families, rehabilitation measures, and identity cards for movement participants, questioning why these initiatives remain unfulfilled.
She also criticized the government’s reliance on committee-based processes, suggesting that it was leading to unnecessary delays instead of concrete action. According to her, meaningful steps must be taken to ensure justice and welfare for those who sacrificed for the state’s formation.
However, her remarks have also reopened a complex and sensitive issue — defining who qualifies as a Telangana movement activist or martyr. Political analysts note that the movement, particularly during phases like the Sakala Janula Samme, saw widespread participation from various sections of society, making it difficult to create a universally accepted list.
While the government is reportedly examining the matter through committees, Vijaya Shanti questioned whether this approach is genuinely aimed at resolution or merely prolonging the process.
Her statements have sparked fresh political debate, with critics accusing her of raising the issue belatedly and questioning the consistency of her stance, especially as a member of the ruling party.
