Radhe Shyam remains one of the biggest failures in Telugu cinema, not just in terms of budget but also in its overall performance at the box office. The film’s leading lady, Pooja Hegde, faced significant criticism following its debacle. However, this setback unexpectedly opened new doors for her in Tamil cinema.
Pooja recently revealed that director Karthik Subbaraj cast her in Retro because of her performance in Radhe Shyam. Speaking about this, she said, “I play a very different role in Retro. It’s a unique character, and that’s something I love about South cinema—every character carries a mystery. Karthik Subbaraj liked my emotional scenes in Radhe Shyam and felt I would be a perfect fit for Retro.”
She further added, “It just takes one filmmaker to look beyond failures and recognize an actor’s potential in a performance.”
In Retro, Pooja plays the role of Suriya’s wife, a character with multiple shades. Unlike Karthik Subbaraj’s usual action-packed films, this one is projected as a proper love story set against an action-filled backdrop.
Currently, Retro is Pooja Hegde’s biggest bet in the South, as she has not signed any other major projects after a series of setbacks. If Retro becomes a hit, it could revive her demand in the industry. Additionally, she has Jana Nayagan with Vijay, which could be another game-changer for her career.
