Ticket Price Hike for Kantara Sparks Debate Between Telugu and Kannada Film Industries

Share

The upcoming release of Kantara: Chapter 1, directed by and starring Rishab Shetty, set for October 2, has sparked discussions across film circles due to a recent ticket price hike approved by the Andhra Pradesh government.

Producers and distributors in the Telugu film industry expressed concerns, highlighting that Telugu films often face hurdles when released in Karnataka. Requests for higher ticket prices for Telugu films are frequently denied, and promotional materials such as posters and banners are sometimes removed, even for major films like RRR. Recent releases, including Game Changer, Hari Hara Veera Mallu, and OG, have encountered similar challenges, prompting some producers to approach the Karnataka High Court for intervention.

Industry stakeholders argue that granting higher ticket prices to Kannada films in Andhra Pradesh without addressing the difficulties faced by Telugu films in Karnataka could create perceptions of inequality.

Despite these concerns, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan decided to proceed with the ticket price hike. Pawan Kalyan emphasized that cinema should serve as a unifying force rather than a divisive one. He noted the strong support Telugu audiences have historically extended to Kannada stars—from Dr. Rajkumar to contemporary actors like Sudeep, Upendra, Shiva Rajkumar, and Rishab Shetty. The Deputy Chief Minister suggested that challenges faced by Telugu films in Karnataka should be resolved through industry dialogue, rather than creating barriers locally.
