Jana Nayagan Release Delayed: Vijay Faces CBFC Hurdles Amid Controversy
January 11, 2026

It is well known that Kollywood star Dhanush Vijay’s film Jana Nayagan is facing serious hurdles ahead of its release. Ideally, the movie was expected to hit screens this Sankranti, but with the release process now under court scrutiny, delays have become inevitable. Some industry insiders believe that once all issues are resolved, Jana Nayagan could release by the end of January, while others suggest a possible postponement to the summer.
Meanwhile, political controversies surrounding Jana Nayagan have intensified, with some groups reportedly trying to block the release. Vijay’s team and the film industry at large have stood firmly in support of the actor. Recently, controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) came forward to support Vijay, sharply criticizing the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) for obstructing the movie’s release.
In a detailed post, RGV argued that the CBFC has become an irrelevant institution in today’s digital age. He noted that the board’s interference is not limited to Vijay’s film alone, but reflects a larger, outdated system that fails to align with contemporary realities. “Today, a 12-year-old can access violent and adult content on a phone, yet the board considers censoring a dialogue or a cigarette puff in a film as protecting society. That’s a big joke,” RGV said.
He further suggested that the CBFC should rely on intelligent guidelines rather than arbitrary cuts and criticized the board’s approach as “theatrics” disguised as morality. According to RGV, cinema is not a classroom—it is a mirror to society, and audiences should be trusted to decide what they watch.
Although the Madras High Court single judge directed the CBFC to issue the censor certificate, the board appealed, and the division bench put a stay on the certificate, postponing the case’s next hearing to January 21. As a result, Jana Nayagan has completely missed the Sankranti race. Producers expressed their concern over potential losses, estimating damages of over ₹100 crores due to the missed festive season.
Several prominent personalities, including Kamal Haasan, RGV, and Mari Selvaraj, have publicly supported Vijay. Even Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin weighed in, criticizing the CBFC, stating that it has effectively become a “puppet” under central government control. This controversy has now sparked not just cinematic but also political debates.
