Vijay Sethupathi’s popularity is not confined to Tamil Nadu alone — he has a strong fan following across India, including a devoted audience in the Telugu states. Even before his breakout roles in Pizza and Uppena, many Telugu viewers were already familiar with his captivating performances. It was Uppena, in particular, that deepened his connection with the Telugu audience, making him a household name.
Although several of his earlier Tamil films were dubbed into Telugu, many failed to make an impact. However, last year’s release, Maharaja, arrived with little fanfare and quickly became an unexpected blockbuster. Its success didn’t stop at the box office — the Telugu version gained massive traction on OTT platforms, trending for months and sparking widespread interest.
The overwhelming response has now paved the way for a sequel. According to reports from Kollywood, Vijay Sethupathi and director Nithilan Swaminathan — the brain behind Maharaja — are reuniting to deliver a follow‑up. Despite receiving offers from several top stars, Nithilan has focused on crafting the sequel, with the script said to be nearing completion. Sethupathi is reportedly making room in his busy schedule for the project, and an official announcement is expected soon.
Maharaja was not just a hit in South India — it also found remarkable success in China. Given its reception and global appeal, the sequel is poised to be a bigger, grander spectacle and is already being anticipated as one of the biggest films of the year.
