Vijayasai Reddy’s Comments Spark Discussion on Capital Development

Vijayasai Reddy has once again sparked debate over the development model of Amaravati with a post that reflects his alignment with former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s views on the capital’s growth strategy.

In his message on X, Vijayasai Reddy compared the evolution timelines of major Indian cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, arguing that Amaravati cannot be built overnight through large-scale borrowing and ambitious infrastructure plans. He emphasized that the capital should begin with essential institutions such as the Assembly, Secretariat, High Court, and housing for government employees, and then grow organically over time.

He further stated that excessive spending on grand designs and non-revenue-generating projects could burden the state financially, stressing that a capital city should develop through people, business activity, and gradual expansion rather than debt-driven construction.

His comments reignited the ongoing debate on whether Amaravati should follow a phased, organic development model or a planned, large-scale infrastructure approach. Critics argue that relying solely on gradual growth could result in issues seen in other Indian metros like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi—ranging from traffic congestion to pollution and strained infrastructure.

Supporters of planned development point out that Andhra Pradesh has a rare opportunity to build a well-structured capital city from scratch, avoiding the pitfalls of unplanned urban growth witnessed in many Indian cities.

The discussion also brought back political memories of past debates around technology and urban development in the state, highlighting how infrastructure visions have long been a point of contention in Andhra Pradesh politics.
