Elon Musk’s social media company X is reportedly preparing to launch a standalone messaging platform called XChat, with early details already appearing on the Apple App Store listing. The app is expected to debut first on iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads, with a wider rollout plan for Android yet to be confirmed.
XChat was previously available only as an integrated direct messaging feature within the X app, but the move to a standalone platform signals a stronger push by Musk to enter the competitive instant messaging space dominated by apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram’s messaging service. The App Store listing suggests that the app is “coming soon,” with an expected release date of April 17, 2026, for iOS users. It is described as a “private, focused space built for conversation,” emphasizing privacy and simplicity. The listing also highlights “no ads, no tracking, and fully end-to-end encryption,” positioning XChat as a privacy-focused alternative in the messaging market.
The app is expected to offer a range of modern messaging features aimed at competing with established platforms. These include end-to-end encrypted chats, private and group conversations with support for large groups, message editing and deletion, and the ability to block screenshots for added privacy control. It is also expected to support disappearing messages, voice notes, and cross-device audio and video communication, expanding its functionality beyond basic texting.
When compared to WhatsApp, both platforms aim to provide secure and feature-rich communication experiences but differ in ecosystem integration. WhatsApp relies on a mobile number for registration, although username-based login is being explored, while XChat is expected to be linked directly to an X account for access. WhatsApp currently does not display ads and supports features like payments in select regions, while XChat is expected to avoid ads and may adopt subscription-based monetisation in the future. WhatsApp also integrates AI features through Meta AI, while XChat’s potential integration with Grok AI remains unclear. Payment functionality is another possible differentiator, with X reportedly exploring “X Money,” though its integration with XChat has not been confirmed.
