Well-known Tamil producer and owner of the iconic AVM Productions, M. Saravanan, passed away on Thursday morning in Chennai due to age-related ailments. His body will be kept at AVM Studios for the public to pay their respects. Saravanan, aged 86, was widely regarded as one of the stalwarts of Kollywood.

Born in 1939, Saravanan was the son of AV Meiyappan, the founder of AVM Productions. He carried forward his father’s legacy, delivering quality films under the banner along with his brother M. Balasubramaniam. He also served as the Sheriff of Madras in 1986.

Taking charge of the studio and production company in the 1950s, Saravanan played a pivotal role in expanding AVM’s reputation beyond Tamil cinema. Over the next five decades, AVM Productions became synonymous with a distinctive filmmaking style and delivered numerous blockbusters across multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.

Notable films produced under Saravanan’s guidance include Leader, Sivaji, Gemini, Naanum Oru Penn, Samsaram Adhu Minsaram, and Ayan. He also won two Filmfare Awards as a producer. His son, MS Guhan, continues to head the company and carry forward the family legacy. After 2010, AVM Productions shifted focus from feature films to producing web series.

News of Saravanan’s passing prompted condolences from across the film industry and political circles, reflecting the immense respect and admiration he commanded throughout his illustrious career.
