SPB Statue Debate Sparks Controversy in Telangana

December 4, 2025

Share

The Telangana government’s proposal to install a statue of legendary playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam (SPB) at Ravindra Bharati in Hyderabad has sparked widespread debate on social media. Opinions are divided, with arguments both for and against the move.

Some Telangana activists question the appropriateness of placing the statue of a non-Telangana artist on a prominent cultural stage like Ravindra Bharati. They argue that local mass folk artists such as Gaddar and Andeshri should receive priority recognition. Critics also cite lingering regional sensitivities over historical imbalances and feel the move highlights the symbolic dominance of Andhra personalities in public spaces.

On the other hand, supporters contend that SPB was a universal Telugu icon, whose contributions transcend regional boundaries. They argue that rejecting his statue could be seen as a cultural affront. Some point out the irony of opposing SPB when Ravindra Bharati itself is named after Rabindranath Tagore, a non-Telugu figure. Others suggest alternative locations, like Tank Bund, while emphasizing that SPB belongs to the entire Telugu-speaking community, not a specific region.

Some activists have also highlighted SPB’s alleged refusal to sing the “Jaya Jayahe Telangana” anthem. However, supporters note this may have been a personal choice, similar to instances where Telangana lyricists like Chandrabose and Suddala Ashok Teja faced criticism for perceived dilution of Telangana identity in their works.

Observers note that much of the anger online is not directed at SPB personally, but reflects frustration over successive governments’ neglect of Telangana’s cultural history. Ironically, SPB was celebrated more prominently in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Chennai, during his lifetime.

Political parties have largely remained silent on the controversy. Congress leaders have avoided a clear stance, BRS has maintained notable silence despite its Telangana identity agenda, and BJP has not articulated any position.

While most agree that SPB deserves recognition as an unmatched Telugu vocalist, questions remain regarding the government’s timing, intent, and communication. Critics ask why the decision has neither been justified nor withdrawn, and whether the statue will indeed be installed at Ravindra Bharati.
