Love stories have always remained a successful genre in Indian cinema, especially when handled by established actors. While some performers hesitate to explore romantic dramas, considering them limited in scope, several stars have built memorable careers through films centered around love and relationships.
This August, South cinema is set to witness an interesting box-office clash as two romantic entertainers, Viswanath and Sons and Hi, are scheduled to release on the same day. Interestingly, both films are already creating buzz for showcasing unconventional age-gap relationships.
Viswanath and Sons stars Suriya in the lead role, with Mamitha Baiju playing the female lead. The promotional content has hinted at a storyline where Mamitha’s character falls for Suriya’s character, despite a noticeable age difference between them. The film has generated curiosity among audiences due to this unique romantic setup.
On the other hand, Hi features Lady Superstar Nayanthara alongside Kevin, with the film also exploring a relationship involving an age difference between the lead characters. While such themes were earlier explored by legendary filmmakers like K. Balachander, new-generation directors are presenting them with a fresh perspective suited to contemporary audiences.
The chemistry between the lead pairs—Suriya and Mamitha Baiju, and Nayanthara and Kevin—has already attracted attention. The posters and promotional material suggest that both films aim to offer a refreshing take on romance.
Directed by Venky Atluri, Viswanath and Sons presents an interesting dynamic where the male protagonist is older than the female lead. Meanwhile, Hi, directed by debutant Vishnu Edavan, reverses the equation with Nayanthara’s character being older than Kevin’s.
