Battery

While most can be removed, their presence detracts from an otherwise polished software experience.

The Realme 16 Pro+ 5G is a compelling, if slightly conflicted, smartphone. Its strengths are clear: a striking design, a brilliant display, exceptional battery life, and one of the best portrait camera systems in its segment.

The recycled processor and intrusive bloatware are frustrating compromises, but they don’t entirely overshadow the phone’s core appeal. If photography, battery endurance, and everyday reliability matter more to you than raw benchmark scores, the Realme 16 Pro+ remains a strong value proposition.

Meta Platforms Inc.’s Threads has overtaken Elon Musk-owned X in daily mobile users, marking a notable shift in the global social media landscape as X grapples with mounting regulatory and ethical scrutiny.

According to data from Similarweb cited by TechCrunch, Threads recorded 141.5 million daily active mobile users across iOS and Android as of January 7, 2026, surpassing X, which stood at 125 million daily active mobile users. The figures highlight Threads’ growing traction on smartphones, even as X continues to maintain a strong presence on desktop web.

Despite losing ground on mobile, X still dominates web-based usage. Similarweb data shows X attracting 434.1 million monthly new website users globally, compared with Threads’ 737,505 monthly new users. Threads remains largely an app-first platform, while X continues to benefit from its long-established web ecosystem.

TechCrunch noted that the rise in Threads’ mobile usage reflects a longer-term adoption trend, rather than a short-term reaction to controversies surrounding X. However, the timing coincides with intensified scrutiny of X’s AI chatbot, Grok, which has been accused of generating and circulating non-consensual sexualised images of women and content that appeared to involve minors. The controversy has prompted the California attorney general to open an investigation into the chatbot’s use and safeguards.

Amid these developments, rival microblogging platforms are also seeing increased interest. Bluesky, positioned as an alternative to X, recorded a sharp spike in iOS downloads as reports of AI-generated deepfakes on X began to surface, according to Appfigures.

The contrast between X and Threads is particularly stark in India. Similarweb data for October to December 2025 shows X accounting for 99.9% of social microblogging web traffic in the country, while Threads — which does not yet offer a full web experience — commands just 0.1%.

Meta has aggressively promoted Threads through cross-posting and integration with Facebook and Instagram, enabling the platform to scale rapidly. In October 2025, Meta said Threads had crossed 150 million daily active users globally, driven by frequent feature updates and deeper integration across its social platforms.

While X remains dominant on the web, Threads’ lead in mobile usage underscores changing user behaviour and signals intensifying competition in the microblogging space, particularly as concerns around AI safety and content moderation continue to shape platform choices.

US to Require $5,000–$15,000 Visa Bond for Bangladeshi B1/B2 Applicants

The United States has introduced a new visa bond requirement for certain Bangladeshi nationals applying for B1/B2 business and tourist visas, aimed at curbing visa overstays. Under the rule, approved applicants may be required to deposit a refundable bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.

Ahead of the rollout, the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka issued a caution against premature or unofficial payments. “Do not pay your bond before your interview. Paying early does not guarantee a visa, and third-party websites can be scams,” the embassy said on Monday. It added that any payment made before the visa interview is non-refundable, while the bond itself will be returned if the visa conditions are fully respected.

The requirement will apply only to Bangladeshi nationals whose B1/B2 visas are approved on or after January 21. Applicants holding valid visas issued before that date will not be affected. Bangladesh has recently been added to a list of 38 countries worldwide subject to the non-immigrant visa bond requirement.

The exact bond amount — $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 — will be determined during the visa interview based on an individual assessment. Applicants asked to post a bond must formally agree to the conditions and make the payment through the US Treasury Department’s official online platform, pay.gov. The bond is refundable if the visa is refused or if the traveller complies fully with visa rules, including departing the United States within the authorised stay period.

Bangladesh has reacted cautiously to the decision. Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain described the country’s inclusion as “very painful and unfortunate,” though he acknowledged it was not entirely unexpected. “This decision is not limited to Bangladesh alone; several countries are included,” he said. “Those facing immigration problems are on the list. US statistics show that Bangladeshis top the list of people drawing money from the social system there. So Bangladesh being included does not seem abnormal to me.”

Among South Asian nations, Nepal and Bhutan have also been included, alongside several countries from Africa, Latin America and Central Asia.

The visa bond requirement is being introduced as part of a pilot programme to address non-immigrant visa overstays. The Donald Trump administration has said the initiative will run from August 20, 2025, to August 5 this year.
