The YSR Congress Party, led by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, has once again come under criticism for allegedly extending support to party followers accused of unlawful activities. The controversy stems from incidents reported across Andhra Pradesh during Jagan Mohan Reddy’s birthday celebrations in December, where several YSRCP activists were booked under the Animal Cruelty Act for publicly slaughtering animals as part of the festivities.
Multiple incidents were reported on the same day, including road blockades, animal sacrifices in public places, and the brandishing of weapons, causing public inconvenience and raising serious law-and-order concerns. Following these incidents, cases were registered against several individuals, drawing sharp reactions from civil society and animal welfare groups.
While the ruling coalition government condemned these actions and termed them clear violations of the law, Jagan Mohan Reddy is now reportedly standing by the accused party workers. According to recent print media reports, Jagan met a group of YSRCP supporters at his office on Wednesday who are facing cases under the Animal Cruelty Act. These individuals reportedly belong to the Gopalapuram constituency and are said to be close associates of YSRCP in-charge and former Home Minister Taneti Vanitha.
During the meeting, Jagan is believed to have assured them that the party’s legal cell would provide full support in fighting the cases. He reportedly criticised the ruling government for registering cases against YSRCP activists and accused the police of acting in a high-handed manner.
The YSR Congress Party has already been facing public backlash for allegedly encouraging a culture where party supporters take the law into their own hands. Observers feel that if Jagan Mohan Reddy openly defends individuals involved in acts deemed illegal and cruel, it could further dent the party’s image and credibility among the public.
