MAA Elections: Lunch Meetings In Full Flow

Share

In an interesting development of sorts, Manchu Vishnu and Prakash Raj who are fielding their candidature in the forthcoming MAA presidential elections have commenced ‘lunch meetings’ procession.

A couple of days ago, Prakash Raj organized a lunch meeting and close to 100 MAA members attended the same. In the meeting, Prakash Raj vowed to donate Rs 10 crores to MAA corpus fund if he is elected as the MAA president.

Today, Manchu Vishnu followed a similar strategy as he called for a lunch meeting with MAA members at Park Hyatt hotel in Hyderabad. Several MAA members are said to have attended the meeting.

As the elections date, 10th October fast approaches, both Vishnu and Prakash Raj have opened the curtains for lavish lunch meetings with MAA members.

Zoom adding live translation services, coming to Facebook VR

Share

Washington: Popular American video teleconferencing service Zoom has plans to expand its support for automatic live transcriptions with the addition of live translation, and turn its whiteboard feature into more of a fully-featured app, among several other changes, which the company announced at its Zoomtopia conference on Monday.

According to The Verge, automatic live transcriptions / closed captions in English were announced to be coming to free Zoom accounts in February 2021. Now Zoom has said it “plans to provide real-time transcription for (as many as 30 additional languages) by the end of next year.”

As part of that push, Zoom will also offer translation services for paid accounts, with the plan “to support real-time translation across as many as 12 languages by the end of next year.”

Zoom wasn’t able to share details about which languages will be supported and when, but did say these improvements are a direct result of the machine learning know-how it gained by acquiring German translation company Kites.

The other major change coming to Zoom is its whiteboard feature. Zoom currently lets you create and share whiteboards during meetings to doodle together while you talk, but a planned expansion launching in beta later this year will make Zoom Whiteboard available outside of meetings in Zoom apps and the web.

The basic drawing tools don’t appear to be different from what Zoom currently offers, the main change is how Zoom is treating Whiteboard as a product alongside video calls, rather than a feature that lives inside of them. Users will be able to add sticky notes, drawings, and comments on their boards and view them whenever they want.

As per The Verge, early next year, Zoom will be coming to Facebook’s Horizon Workrooms. The shared VR meeting space will be able to host video meetings and connect to Zoom Whiteboard, according to Zoom.

In VR, you can pin a Zoom Whiteboard to your virtual desk or to the wall for everyone to see, and draw along with colleagues attending a meeting through a traditional computer

Military junta opens talks over Guinea’s future post-coup

Share

CONARKY: Guinea’s junta is expected to face more pressure Tuesday to set a timeframe for new elections after the military rulers opened a four-day series of meetings about the West African nation’s future following the coup just over a week ago.

Concerns are growing about how quickly the junta led by Col.Mamady Doumbouya will give up power to a civilian-led transitional government as called for by regional mediators and the international community.

The coup has been cautiously welcomed by other longtime opponents of deposed President Alpha Conde including Guinea’s most prominent opposition figure, Cellou Dalein Diallo, who had lost to the ousted leader in the last three presidential elections.

Anger over Conde’s quest for a third term last year led to violent street demonstrations, and many in the capital, Conakry, have shown support for the military takeover.

How long that lasts could depend on what deals are struck at this week’s meetings.

Among those taking part are leaders from Guinea’s mining industry, whom the junta leader has sought to reassure in a bid to prevent the destabilisation of critical bauxite and gold exports that hold up the country’s economy.

On Tuesday, the junta was kicking off talks by meeting with officials from Diallo’s party, the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea, and other critics of Conde.

Later it will welcome religious leaders to the People’s Palace, where earlier it summoned officials from the ousted government and demanded they hand over their passports and keys to government vehicles.

After wrapping up a visit to Conakry on Monday, the head of the UN, Office for West Africa and the Sahel said he was placing “a lot of hope” on this week’s meetings.

“Because whatever the international community will say or do, the fate of Guinea is what the Guineans themselves will decide,” Annadif Khatir Mahamat Saleh said.

Diallo, the three-time presidential candidate, has made clear he’d like to run if new elections are organised.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday he called the ousted president a dictator who brought about his own demise because of his defiance of constitutional term limits.

The West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS already has threatened sanctions unless the junta releases the deposed president, as it did last year when a military coup took place in neighboring Mali.

“I call on them not to sanction Guinea, but to accompany the new authorities in the rapid return to constitutional order within a reasonable timeframe through the organization of inclusive, free and transparent elections,” the longtime Guinean opposition leader told the AP.

After Mali’s August 2020 coup, ECOWAS imposed sanctions and proposed a one-year deadline for the political transition.

Regional mediators later acquiesced to the junta leaders and accepted an 18-month timeframe that now appears in doubt as February 2022 approaches.

After agreeing to a civilian transitional government following the coup, Col.

Assimi Goita effectively staged another coup nine months later by firing the president and prime minister and later declaring himself president of the transition.

Both Guinea and Mali had gone years without military coups, leading some to think they might have become a thing of the past.

Some fear that if left unchecked, the recent coups in West Africa could encourage militaries elsewhere to stage takeovers of their own.

Earlier this year, the military in Chad also seized power after longtime President Idriss Deby Itno was slain, putting his son Mahamat Idriss Deby in charge even though Chad’s constitution had called for power to be transferred to the National Assembly president.

Niagale Bagayoko, chair of the African Security Sector Network who focuses her research on West and Central Africa, said the threat extends beyond military coups to include presidents who try to change their country’s constitutions to remain in power.

“What it is at stake today is: Do we continue to support democratically elected authorities, and what does it mean to be democratically elected?” she said.

“The problems that we do have in the sub-region, not only in countries where a coup happened, is that you have both unconstitutional civilian kinds of coups and military coups.

And it’s difficult to fight against the latter when there’s not been really any condemnation for the former.

India, UK aim to start FTA talks by November 1; eye early harvest trade deal

Share

LONDON/NEW DELHI: India and the UK are aiming to start negotiations for the proposed bilateral free trade agreement by November 1, a move aimed at enhancing trade and investments between the two countries.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said the two countries are moving towards an early harvest trade agreement, with a comprehensive FTA (Free Trade Agreement) as the next step.

The UK expressed hope that there is a “strong possibility” to get an early agreement on trade between the two countries.

The matters related to FTA came up during a virtual meeting between Goyal and his British counterpart Secretary of State Elizabeth Truss on Tuesday.

“Proposed FTA between India and the UK is expected to unlock extraordinary business opportunities and generate jobs.

Both sides have renewed their commitment to boosting trade in a manner which benefits all,” India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry said in a statement.

Speaking on the occasion, Goyal said there is a keenness to have an early conclusion of negotiations for quick and early economic benefits to businesses on both sides.

He also informed that substantial work has already been done and extensive stakeholder consultations have been held involving industry, business associations, export promotion councils, buyers/sellers associations, regulatory bodies, ministries, and public research bodies for the proposed pact.

Further, bilateral working groups for different tracks have been formed to understand ambitions, interests and sensitivities of each other to facilitate accelerated progress during the negotiations.

The meetings of these groups are presently in progress and are likely to be completed by September.

Goyal said these discussions would help both sides in understanding each other’s policy regimes and would put us in a better position when both sides begin their joint scoping discussions, beginning on October 1, for finalising the terms of references for launch of negotiations in November.

“An interim trade agreement, as a first step of a FTA would allow both of us to immensely benefit from the early gains of the partnership,” he said, adding that India and UK are strengthening trade ties by moving towards an early harvest deal followed by a comprehensive FTA.

In a free trade agreement, two or more trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them besides liberalising norms to promote trade in services and investments.

In an interim trade pact, customs duties are removed on a limited number of goods.

Goyal emphasised the need to strike a balance between commitments and concessions in goods and services.

Further, the statement said that certain services of mutual interest may be included in the interim agreement through the request offer approach wherein it can include priority sectors which are immediately deliverable.

“If necessary, we may also explore signing a few Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) in selective services like nursing and architecture services,” it added.

MRAs pave the way for recognition of the professional bodies of one country by the other.

Regulatory bodies of various professional services like engineering, nursing, accountancy and architecture are encouraged to enter into these pacts.

UK Secretary of State for International Trade Liz Truss, in a statement posted on her Twitter handle, announced the launch of trade working groups to lay the groundwork for a forthcoming UK-India trade agreement.

“Today Piyush Goyal and I launched trade working groups to lay the groundwork for our forthcoming UK-India trade deal, which will: boost access to more than a billion consumers; bolster our science and tech industries; and support jobs in both countries,” she said.

The UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) said the talks between the two ministers focussed on the scope and ambition for a UK-India FTA, following the close of the UK’s formal consultation process ahead of the negotiations on August 31.

The UK government said these regular ministerial dialogues help both sides better understand each other’s position on potential chapter areas in any trade deal, including tariffs, standards, IP (Intellectual Property) and data regulation.

Truss reaffirmed her ambition to negotiate a trade agreement that delivers results for the British people and businesses, including those in digital and data, tech and food and drink.

Both ministers agreed that continuing to engage with the business community was vital throughout the forthcoming negotiations, DIT said.

According to officials, findings from the DIT’s public consultation will be published before the start of formal trade negotiations as part of a wider package outlining a strategic rationale for the FTA, including the UK’s negotiating objectives and economic analysis of a potential deal.

Earlier, the UK trade ministry said that preparations towards an FTA with India was progressing.

A deal would represent a major boost for UK exporters, lowering tariffs, easing regulation, and driving up bilateral trade which totalled GBP 23 billion in 2019, it noted.

Increasing UK-India trade has been dubbed a huge opportunity by the UK, given India’s position as one of the world’s biggest and fastest-growing economies and home to more than a billion consumers.

“We are looking at a comprehensive trade agreement that covers everything, from financial services to legal services to digital and data, as well as goods and agriculture.

We think there is a strong possibility for us to get an early agreement, where we lower tariffs on both sides and start to see more goods flowing between our two countries,” Truss said.

The bilateral trade between the two nations stood at USD 13.

11 billion in 2020-21 as against USD 15.

45 billion in 2019-20.

Trade balance is in favour of India.

India’s main exports to the UK are textiles, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, petroleum products, transport equipment, spices, machinery and instruments, pharmaceuticals and marine products.

The main imports from Britain include precious and semi-precious stones, ores, metal scraps, engineering goods, chemicals and machinery.

In the services sector, the UK is the largest market in Europe for Indian IT services.
