Mudrapragada’s letter to CM becomes political hot topic

Share

After a long time, Mudrapragada Padmanabham has made some noise, by writing a letter to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Mudrapragada was recently in the news after everyone expected him to respond to the severely offending comments that MLA Ambati Rambabu made against the Kapu community. However, there hasn’t been any response from Mudrapragada’s side.

Everyone thought that the letter that Mudrapragada wrote to Jagan would consist of a reply in this regard, but that didn’t turn out to be the case. Instead, Mudrapragada’s letter to Jagan was about TDP member Ashok Gajapatiraju, and about the character of the man. It is known that Ashok Gajapathiraju is being severely insulted by Vijayasai Reddy and other YSRCP members in recent days. Ashok Gajapathiraju is even being threatened to be sent to jail by these people, which is reportedly paining Mudrapragada.

Mudrapragada is said to have requested the CM to make sure that Ashok Gajapathiraju is not insulted by anyone, as he’s a great man who donated acres of lands and crores of rupees for the benefit of the people of the state. Mudrapragada’s letter about Ashok Gajapathiraju is in total contrast to the way he responds during any TDP event, which is why his letter has become a political hot topic right now. On the other hand, Mudrapragada is getting severe backlash for not coming in support of the Kapu community, which was badly insulted.

Khammam: 1,400 children test coronavirus positive in 21 days

Share

KHAMMAM: Amid the fear of a possible third wave, Khammam has started witnessing a gradual increase in the number of children, between the ages 0 and 12, getting infected by Covid-19. According to official sources, while a total of 800 children tested positive for the virus in April and May, the number has shot up and around 1,480 children have tested positive for Covid in June, till Monday.

These details came to light during the door-to-door survey organised by the authorities concerned. Out of the total 16,302 cases recorded in the district during the survey, 1,480 were children. However, since most of them experience only mild to moderate symptoms, the officials opine that the situation is under control.

Meanwhile, the Health Department officials have already shifted those positive kids having moderate symptoms to the designated Covid ward opened at the district headquarters hospital a few days ago. Speaking to Express, DMHO Dr B Malathi said that the recovery rate among children in the district has been 100 per cent till date.

Jio, Intel to Work Together on 5G Network Technology Development

Share

Intel on Monday said it will work with Reliance Jio to develop 5G networking technology.

Intel’s venture capital unit last year invested $250 million (roughly Rs. 1,857.42 crores) in Reliance’s Jio Platforms unit, saying the two companies would find areas of technology partnership. On Monday, Intel said it will work on “co-innovations” with Reliance Jio for its 5G radio-access network (RAN), among other things.

“This is the fruit of that partnership,” Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of the data platforms group at Intel, told Reuters in an interview.” 5G in India is going to be massive, and (Reliance Jio) are doing it in a non-legacy way.”

Apple might launch M1X powered MacBook Pro, Mac mini in 2021’s Q4

Share

Washington: Two MacBook Pro models and one Mac mini are expected to arrive within the fourth quarter of this year, with all three machines fueled by American tech giant Apple’s much-talked-about M1X chipset.

According to The Verge, reports suggest that both the M1X MacBook Pro models, which can likely include a 14-inch and a 16-inch version, alongside a Mac mini, will be launched in late October or early November.

Since Apple did announce its M1-running MacBook products last year on November 10, this prediction could hold merit, but a lot can happen within the coming months. From what’s known, both the M1X MacBook Pro models are expected to feature mini-LED screens a bit like the M1 iPad Pro.

Unfortunately, Apple has run into supply issues with this particular component, and to mitigate those problems, the company has reportedly added another supplier to assist with production slowdowns.

Even then, Apple isn’t expected to start out production of the new portable Macs until late 2021, and since the Mac mini can’t be announced as a standalone product since it’ll deduct the spotlight from the MacBook Pro family, it’ll likely be unveiled alongside the 14-inch and 16-inch notebooks.

Unfortunately, customers who are expecting Apple to unveil a workstation featuring its own silicon are going to be highly disappointed, as reports state that the iMac Pro won’t be showcased at Apple’s upcoming event.

Pakistan won’t host American bases as it may lead to ‘revenge attacks’: PM Khan

Share

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has ruled out hosting American bases in Pakistan for military action inside war-torn Afghanistan, fearing it might lead to his country being “targeted in revenge attacks” by terrorists.

In an opinion piece in The Washington Post newspaper ahead of US President Joe Biden’s meeting with top Afghan leaders at the White House later this week, Khan also questioned the efficacy of such US bases in Pakistan.

“We simply cannot afford this. We have already paid too heavy a price,” Khan said, amid reports that the US continues to focus on Pakistan for a military base in the region.

Elaborating the reasons for not giving nod the US to have bases in Pakistan, which were earlier allowed after 9/11 to coordinate operations in Afghanistan, the prime minister said, “If Pakistan were to agree to host US bases, from which to bomb Afghanistan, and an Afghan civil war ensued, Pakistan would be targeted for revenge by terrorists again.”

According to media reports, the US used the Shamsi air base in Balochistan to carry out hundreds of drone strikes since 2008.

The drone strikes focused primarily on suspected Al Qaeda operatives in mountainous tribal areas, but also crossed the border into Afghanistan.

“If the United States, with the most powerful military machine in history, couldn’t win the war from inside Afghanistan after 20 years, how would America do it from bases in our country?” Khan asked.

Khan, however, underlined that Pakistan and the US have the same interests in Afghanistan: a political settlement, stability, economic development and the denial of any haven for terrorists.

“We want a negotiated peace, not civil war,” he wrote. The prime minister said Pakistan is ready to be a partner for peace in Afghanistan with the US but “we will avoid risking further conflict” after withdrawal of American troops.

Amid the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, the US is looking for options to keep a close eye on the region and is talking to other countries about it.

Pakistan, however, has told the US that it will not give its bases and reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to Afghan peace.

Biden’s talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and the Chairman of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah on Friday will discuss US troop withdrawal amid a surge in fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban across the country.

Khan said Pakistan in the past had made a mistake by choosing between warring Afghan parties, but it learned from that experience.

“We have no favourites and will work with any government that enjoys the confidence of the Afghan people. History proves that Afghanistan can never be controlled from outside,” he said.

Khan said Pakistan suffered so much from the wars in Afghanistan. “More than 70,000 Pakistanis have been killed. While the United States provided USD 20 billion in aid, losses to the Pakistani economy have exceeded USD 150 billion.” He said tourism and investment dried up and after joining the US effort, “Pakistan was targeted as a collaborator, leading to terrorism against our country from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and other groups”.

He also questioned the use of US drone attacks, which “I warned against, didn’t win the war, but they did create hatred for Americans, swelling the ranks of terrorist groups against both our countries”.

Khan said there are more than three million Afghan refugees in Pakistan and their number may increase in case of further civil war in Afghanistan.

He said most of the Taliban are from the Pashtun ethnic group and more than half the Pashtuns live on the Pakistan side of the border.

“This is why we have done a lot of real diplomatic heavy lifting to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table, first with the Americans, and then with the Afghan government.

“We know that if the Taliban tries to declare a military victory, it will lead to endless bloodshed. We hope the Afghan government will also show more flexibility in the talks, and stop blaming Pakistan, as we are doing everything we can short of military action,” he said.

Khan said promoting economic connectivity and regional trade is the key to lasting peace and security in Afghanistan.

“Further military action is futile. If we share this responsibility, Afghanistan, once synonymous with the ‘Great Game’ and regional rivalries, could instead emerge as a model of regional cooperation,” he said.

Political crisis worsens in Nepal; SC quashes PM Oli’s appointment of 20 Cabinet ministers

Share

KATHMANDU: In a major blow to beleaguered Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the appointment of 20 ministers by him was unconstitutional, invalidating his two recent Cabinet expansions after the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

A division bench of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and Justice Prakash Kumar Dhungana ruled that Cabinet expansions after the dissolution of the House were unconstitutional and hence, the ministers cannot discharge their duties, a report in the Kathmandu Post said.

Two deputy Prime Ministers, Rajendra Mahato from Janata Samajwadi Party and Raghubir Mahaseth from Oli’s CPN-UML were among those who lost the posts.

Mahaseth was also the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

With the order, there are only five ministers left in Oli’s Cabinet, including the Prime Minister.

The ministers include Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel, Education Minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha, Physical Infrastructure Minister Basant Nembang and Law Minister Lilanath Shrestha.

The court passed the judgement on petitions filed on June 7 by six individuals, including senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, demanding that the Cabinet expansions by the caretaker government be quashed.

Oli, 69, who is heading a minority government after losing a trust vote in the House last month, expanded his Cabinet on June 10 and June 4, inducting 17 ministers, amid widespread criticism and the ongoing political crisis in the Himalayan nation.

Three state ministers were also appointed.

“The Supreme Court has issued an interim order asking not to allow the ministers appointed after the House dissolution to function,” said senior advocate Tripathi.

The Supreme Court has cited Article 77 (3) in its ruling to quash the appointments.

It states if the Office of the Prime Minister falls vacant after the prime minister fails to win a vote of confidence or resigns, the same Council of Ministers shall continue to act until another Council of Ministers is constituted, the report said.

The petitioners had argued that since the government has already turned into a caretaker status following the announcement of the elections, the Constitution does not allow such a prime minister to appoint new ministers.

The development comes when the Supreme Court is hearing the case regarding the reinstatement of the 275-member House of Representatives, which was dissolved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on May 22 at the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli.

The President had also announced snap elections on November 12 and November 19.

Oli last week defended his government’s controversial decision to dissolve the House of Representatives and told the Supreme Court that it is not up to the judiciary to appoint a premier as it cannot undertake the legislative and the executive functions of the state.

Nepal plunged into a political crisis on December 20 last year after President Bhandari dissolved the House and announced fresh elections on April 30 and May 10 at the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli, amidst a tussle for power within the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP).

In February, the Supreme Court reinstated the dissolved House of Representatives, in a setback to the embattled prime minister who was preparing for snap polls.

Oli repeatedly defended his move to dissolve the House of Representatives, saying some leaders of his party were attempting to form a “parallel government”.
