The Dalit communities in AP, especially in Kostha Andhra are opposing the appointment of YCP leader Thota Trimurthulu as an MLC under the Governor’s quota. Since there are criminal cases against Trimurthulu, initially, Governor Vishwabushan Harichandan refused to approve him as MLC under the Governor quota. Then, CM Jagan met the Governor and gave clarity over this. Against this backdrop, Governor gave a green signal to Thota’s appointment.

However, this is being condemned on a large scale in Dalit communities as Thota Trimurthulu tonsured a Dalit man and severely bet him. The case is still under investigation. Allu Arjun’s Pushpa to commence shooting from this date

ICON star Allu Arjun has teamed up with director Sukumar for an action thriller titled Pushpa. The shoot of this multilingual film has been stalled due to the second wave of Covid-19.

After taking a brief gap with the shooting formalities, the Pushpa team is all set to resume the shoot on July 5.

As per reports, the makers are planning to begin a fresh schedule in Hyderabad. After wrapping up this key schedule, director Sukumar is making arrangements to leave for China or Thailand to shoot a lengthy action sequence.

By now, everyone knows Pushpa will be released in two parts and the first part will hit the screens this year. The actor-director duo will start working on the second part after they complete their previous commitments.

Starring Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead and Fahadh Faazil as the antagonist, the film is bankrolled by Y Naveen and Y Ravi Shankar under their banner Mythri Movie Makers. Pushpa will be released in Telugu with plans for a simultaneous release in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

As a sensational development in actress Aisha Sultana’s case, in connection with the sedition case, the Kerala High Court on Thursday granted bail to her.

The High Court heard a anticipatory petition. As a major relief to her, the single-judge bench granted protection from arrest for one week.

While granting the bail, the court directed the actress to co-operate with the investigation and she was also directed to appear before the cops for the investigation.

In the orders, the High Court said if the actress was arrested before one week post interrogation, she will be released on anticipatory bail.

Konda planning a re-entry in TRS?

Former TRS Chevella MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, in a shocking turn of events, met with Agriculture Minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy today. This has caused quite the political stir in Telangana, given that Konda had quit the TRS right before the 2018 general elections and joined the Congress.

In the 2018 general elections, Konda was defeated by the TRS in Chevella, and Konda recently quit Congress, in March this year. Konda is not part of any political party right now, and he has made several attempts to form his own political party with those opposing KCR, but this did not materialise. Konda tried getting Etela Rajender on his side, but even Etela is said to have told Konda that it wouldn’t be possible to go against KCR, by forming a new party.

Niranjan Reddy is a close aide of KCR’s, which is why there is so much talk about Konda meeting him. The current Lok Sabha member of Chevella, Ranjith Reddy is very close to Etela, and there are rumours that Ranjith is planning to join the BJP very soon. Even if Ranjith continues in TRS, sources say that KCR would give rise to a situation where Ranjith would be forced to quit the party. It is being said that Konda is trying to re-join the party for the 2024 elections, and contest from Chevella, with the help of Niranjan.

On the other hand, Konda said that he met with Niranjan only to discuss the problems being faced by the farmers in the state, and no political issues came to discussion.

Curfew to be extended with more relaxations

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said the partial curfew in effect in the state since May 5 would be extended further with more relaxations. The curfew yielded the desired results by containing the spread of Covid-19, he asserted.Reviewing the Covid-19 situation on Wednesday, Jagan said the strategy adopted by the state gave good results and the number of cases were coming down. “The positivity rate is coming down—from 25.56 per cent on May 15, it came down to 5.97 per cent,’’ he said and added the same was done without impacting the economy or disrupting the livelihood of people.

Jagan asked the officials to continue the ongoing fever survey every week and cover every house. “If any person is found with Covid symptoms, test them and provide them treatment. If the person tests positive for Covid, take necessary follow up action immediately.’’ The CM wanted the officials to focus on those who show symptoms during the survey for testing.Anticipating that the number of cases would come down further in a week, Jagan Mohan Reddy said there might not be the necessity to conduct more number of tests in the coming days.

Complimenting the district collectors for their work in containing the spread of the virus and implementing YSR Aarogyasri, the chief minister said 89 per cent of people have taken Covid treatment under Aarogyasri. “As of date, over 16,000 people are undergoing Covid treatment in the state and, of them, more than 14 000 people are being treated under Aarogyasri.’’ He instructed the collectors to ensure that private strictly follow the rules and regulations, and do not charge more than the prescribed rates. “Do not hesitate to shut down erring hospitals. Act tough against those who exploit the situation,’’ he said and added penalties should be imposed on first-time offenders, and cases be filed against repeat offenders.

With regard to ‘104’ call center, Jagan asked the collectors to ensure their effective functioning as Covid one-stop centres. “’104’ should be the first thought of the people for all things Covid.” Jagan Mohan Reddy directed the officials to be focused even though the number of cases are declining. “Do not relax as there is a decline in cases,’’ he told the Collectors.On the possibility of the third wave, the CM directed the officials to be prepared for it. “Since studies show that children are susceptible to the infection in the possible third wave, officials should be prepared with a good action plan,’’ he said and added that three state-of-the-art hospitals–at Visakhapatnam, Krishna-Guntur and Tirupati–will be set up for pediatric treatment. He wanted the collectors to identify lands for the hospitals.

He directed the officials to prepare an action plan at district level for the next two months and implement it. “Check the quality of ICU beds in teaching hospitals and provision of medical care to infants and ensure that oxygen beds are available at CHCs and area hospitals. Provide training to the nurses in providing treatment to children,’’ he told officials.

Further, the Chief Minister ordered the officials not to deviate from the prescribed vaccination policy. Stating that the vaccine production in the country is very low and there is a need to increase the capacity to efficiently vaccinate people, he said: “Although 3.5 crore people have to be vaccinated, so far only 26,33,351 have received two doses of vaccine, and 6,90,710 have received a single dose of vaccine. There is a long way to go still.”

Inside News: Akkineni father-son duo to play brothers in Bangarraju

Akkineni Nagarjuna‘s Bangarraju is one of the highly anticipated sequels in Tollywood. The film, which is a sequel to the actor’s hit film Soggade Chinni Nayana, has been in the news for a long time now.

It was supposed to go on floors this May, but due to the pandemic situation, the makers are planning to start the production in mid-July.

We already reported that Nagarjuna’s son and actor Naga Chaitanya will be playing a key role in the film. Now, we have exclusively learnt that Nagarjuna and Chay will be seen as brothers in Bangarraju. The father-son duo will be playing brothers on screen for the first time. They have earlier acted in the film ‘Manam’ which also starred Samantha Akkineni.

Kalyan Krishna, who had directed the film, will wield the megaphone for the sequel as well. The film will be bankrolled by Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Studios. Bangarraju will feature Ramya Krishnan as the female lead. The film is slated to hit screens next year.

Japan announces easing of virus emergency ahead of Olympics

TOKYO: Japan on Thursday announced the easing of a coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo and six other areas from next week, with new daily cases falling just as the country begins final preparations for the Olympics starting in just over a month.

Japan has been struggling since late March to slow a wave of infections propelled by more contagious variants, with new daily cases soaring above 7,000 at one point and seriously ill patients straining hospitals in Tokyo, Osaka and other metropolitan areas.

Daily cases have since subsided significantly, paving the way for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to downgrade the state of emergency when it expires on Sunday to less stringent measures. The new measures will last until July 11 — just 12 days before the Games.

Suga said the relaxed measures will focus on early closures of bars and restaurants.

If another surge occurs and strains hospitals, “we will quickly take action, including strengthening of the measures,” Suga said, addressing concerns by medical experts.

Holding the Olympics before elections in the fall is also a political gamble for Suga, whose support ratings have tumbled over dissatisfaction with his handling of the pandemic, a slow vaccination drive and a lack of explanation about how he intends to ensure the virus doesn’t spread during the Olympics.

Experts at a virus panel meeting Thursday gave their approval for government plans to downgrade the emergency in Tokyo, Aichi, Hokkaido, Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Fukuoka.

“We must do everything we can, and provide firm financial support as well,” to minimize risks of a resurgence of infections, said Dr. Shigeru Omi, head of a government COVID-19 panel.

Japan does not enforce hard lockdowns and the state of emergency allows prefectural leaders to order closures or shorter hours for non-essential businesses. Those that comply are compensated and violators fined. Stay-at-home and other measures for the general population are only requests and are increasingly ignored.

At a parliamentary Health and Labor Committee last week, Omi cautioned that holding the Olympics in the middle of the pandemic is “abnormal” and warned that it would increase the risk of infections.

A team of experts on Wednesday released a simulation showing a possible jump in cases during the Olympics if the spread of the new variants and people’s movements increase after emergency measures are eased.

Health Minister Norihisa Tamura told reporters the government would not hesitate to issue another emergency declaration even in the middle of the Olympics to protect people’s lives.

The state of emergency will remain in Okinawa, where hospitals are still overwhelmed, while Hiroshima and Okayama will be taken off the list.

Ryuji Wakita, the director-general of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases who heads a government COVID-19 advisory board, said that infections have decreased in many areas, but the slowing has bottomed out in the Tokyo region. He warned that infections could increase and that signs of a rebound are already seen among younger people.

Even as more people are getting the jabs and most of the country’s 36 million senior citizens are expected to be fully inoculated by the end of July, younger people are largely unvaccinated and infections among them could quickly burden hospitals, Wakita said.

“In order to prevent another upsurge, it is crucial to prevent the people from roaming around during the Olympics and summer vacation,” he said.

Experts say it is crucial to accelerate the vaccine rollout for the Olympics to be safe.

Suga has opened up mass inoculation centers and started vaccinations at major companies, part of an ambitious target of as many as 1 million doses per day. As of Wednesday, only 6% of Japanese were fully vaccinated.

In hard-hit Osaka in western Japan, hospital capacity has improved and new infections dropped to 108 on Wednesday, down from more than 1,200 a day in late April.

In Tokyo, new cases are down to around 500 per day from above 1,100 in mid-May. Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike has said effective virus measures need to be kept in place.

UN: Over 270 migrants rescued and detained in Libya

CAIRO: Over 270 Europe-bound migrants were rescued by a commercial ship off Libya’s Mediterranean shores and handed over to the Libyan coast guard who sent them to detention centers, the U.N. migration and refugee agencies said.

The migrants were rescued in international waters on Monday by the “Vos Triton,” sailing under the flag of Gibraltar, said the International Organization for Migration and the UNHCR in a joint statement Wednesday evening.

A day later, they were returned by the Libyan coast guard to the Tripoli port, from where they were taken into detention by Libyan authorities, the statement added.

“The two organizations reiterate that no one should be returned to Libya after being rescued at sea. Under international maritime law, rescued individuals should be disembarked at a place of safety,” said the agencies, adding that Libya cannot be considered “a safe place.”

The vessel’s owners did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

For almost a decade, war-torn Libya has been the dominant transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East and aspiring to settle in Europe. Smugglers often pack desperate families into ill-equipped rubber boats that stall and founder along the perilous central Mediterranean route.

In recent years, the EU has partnered with Libya’s coast guard and other local groups to stem such dangerous sea crossings. Rights groups, however, say those policies leave migrants at the mercy of either the sea or Libya’s armed groups, with many ending up confined in squalid detention centers rife with abuses.

So far this year, more than 13,000 migrants were returned to Libyan detention centers and hundreds have perished at sea, said both agencies.

“IOM and UNHCR call for an end to arbitrary detention in Libya through the establishment of a judicial review process, and advocate for alternatives to detention starting with the immediate release of the most vulnerable,” read the statement.

The U.N. agencies urged governments to grant merchant vessels rescuing people in distress “swift permission” for disembarkation in safe ports.

Statue of Tipu Sultan to be set up in AP, BJP opposes it!

How can one forget the issues and violence caused by the Jayanthi of controversial Muslim leader Tipu Sultan in Karnataka after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made it to power in the state.

Now the row involving Tipu Sultan is making headlines in Andhra Pradesh as the arrangements are underway to set up a statue of the Muslim king. Earlier this week, MLA Rachamallu Shiva Prasad Reddy, who represents the Proddatur constituency laid the foundation stone for Tippu Sultan Statue.
