Bandi Sanjay slams private colleges for seeking full fee at one go
HYDERABAD: BJP State president Bandi Sanjay, on Tuesday, alleged that the State government has been acting irresponsibly while private educational institutes were harassing students to pay their yearly fees at one go. It was illegal to link school/college fees with allowing students to appear for exams, Sanjay said. He accused TRS leaders of monopolising educational institutes. He threatened to reveal the link between educational institutions and TRS leaders. “I pray to Goddess Saraswati on the occasion of ‘Vasanta Panchami’ to enlighten educational managements so that they stop harassing students and staff,” Sanjay said.

UK PM Boris Johnson warns no ‘cast iron’ guarantee over lifting COVID-19 lockdown
LONDON: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged people, in a strict lockdown to contain the spread of a new Kent variant of coronavirus for months, to temper optimism around restrictions being lifted as a result of a successful vaccine rollout with patience.
During a Downing Street briefing on Monday evening, Johnson said he can’t offer any cast iron guarantees because while infections are falling, there are still more COVID-19 patients in hospitals than the peak of the pandemic in April 2020.
He hailed the “astonishing efforts” of everyone involved in the delivery of jabs after the government met its target of offering a first dose to 15 million of the most vulnerable this week and expanded the rollout further to over-65s.
The UK PM praised the “unprecedented national achievement”, but said now was “no moment to relax”. “Next week I’ll be setting out a roadmap saying as much as we possibly can about the route to normality, even though some things are very uncertain,” Johnson said, in reference to the February 22 date he has previously set for laying out an unlocking plan in Parliament.
“Because we want this lockdown to be the last and we want progress to be cautious but also irreversible. So please continue to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives,” he said. The prime minister said while he was “increasingly optimistic” about the possibility of easing restrictions, he couldn’t guarantee the current lockdown would be the last ever.
“I’m very hopeful that we’ll be able to go ahead and open things up, but to say I can give an absolute cast iron guarantee that we won’t face further difficulties and have to think harder and deeper about some problems, no at this stage I can’t,” he warned.
The government hopes to start reopening schools as the first step to lifting lockdown restrictions, with March 8 a tentative date for the reopening. For the devolved nations, Northern Ireland is following a similar timeline, with Scotland to set out its schools plans this week and Wales to begin the process of reopening next Monday.
The UK recorded another 9,765 new coronavirus infections on Monday, the first time the daily cases figure has been under 10,000 since October 2. The daily death rate has also fallen to 230, but there is usually a lag in official statistics collated over the weekend.
Prosecutors seek fine from Russian government critic Alexei Navalny for defaming WWII veteran
MOSCOW: Prosecutors on Tuesday asked a Moscow court to fine jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny on charges of defaming a World War II veteran, maintaining pressure on the top Kremlin foe. Navalny rejects the accusations of slandering the veteran who was featured in a video last year promoting constitutional amendments that allowed an extension of President Vladimir Putin’s rule.
Navalny (44), an anti-corruption investigator and Putin’s most prominent critic, was arrested last month upon returning from Germany, where he spent five months recovering from a nerve-agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin. Russian authorities have rejected the accusation.
Earlier this month, a Moscow court sentenced Navalny to two years and eight months in prison for violating terms of his probation while recuperating in Germany. The sentence stems from a 2014 embezzlement conviction that Navalny has rejected as fabricated and the European Court of Human Rights has ruled to be unlawful.
During Tuesday’s hearings at Moscow’s Babushkinsky District Court, prosecutors asked the judge to order Navalny to pay a fine of 950,000 rubles (about USD 13,000) for slandering the 94-year-old veteran. Navalny, who called the veteran and other people featured in last year’s pro-Kremlin video “corrupt stooges,” “people without conscience” and “traitors,” rejected the slander charges and described them as part of the authorities’ efforts to disparage him.
The next court session is scheduled for Saturday.
Navalny’s arrest and imprisonment triggered a wave of protests across Russia. The authorities responded with a sweeping crackdown, detaining about 11,000 participants, many of whom were fined or handed jail terms ranging from seven to 15 days.
Russia has rejected Western criticism of Navalny’s arrest and the crackdown on demonstrations as meddling in its internal affairs.

Pay teachers or face music, Bandi Sanjay Kumar to educational institutions
HYDERABAD: BJP State president Bandi Sanjay Kumar warned private educational institutes of serious consequences if they do not pay salaries to their teaching and non-teaching staff. Sanjay appealed to the staff of corporate educational institutes not to take any extreme steps and assured to fight on behalf of them.
On Monday, the private teacher’s union leaders brought to the notice of Sanjay that they had been deprived of salaries for 11 months. He advised the management of corporate educational institutes to amicably solve the issue.Sanjay said that the TRS leaders were backing corporate educational institutes. “There are many leaders who own such educational institutes and have been using those for electoral gain,” Sanjay said.
Madras HC orders interim stay on Vishal’s ‘Chakra’ release
The Madras High Court on Tuesday has ordered an interim stay on the release of Vishal‘s upcoming film ‘Chakra‘ due to alleged copyright violations.
The High Court has asked for a report from Vishal and director MS Anandan, after producer Ravi of Tritan Artists alleged that he owns the copyright of the movie.
Producer Ravi moved the HC claiming that the script of the film was first narrated to him and the director had also signed a contract with him.
On Tuesday, the petitioner’s counsel urged Justice Karthikeyan to stall the release. The bench has ordered an interim stay on the release of Chakra and sought the response of Vishal, who has produced the film, and the director of the movie. The case has been adjourned to Monday. The film was supposed to release on February 19.
