New shock to YSRCP in Ramatheertham incident!

Share

A lot of atrocities have been taking place against the Hindu religion and Hindu Gods, after the YSRCP came to power in Andhra Pradesh. The Ramatheertham temple incident is one of those, which became a political sensation around the state, as the main idol was itself vandalised.

The YSRCP government recently released a GO, in which it has removed former Union Minister and TDP member, Ashok Gajapathiraju as the Trustee of the Ramatheertham temple. Following the release of this GO, Ashok Gajapathiraju approached the High Court, which dismissed the GO issued by the AP government.

Ashok also said that he was highly elated when the new idol which was made after the vandalising of the original idol, following the government’s call to get a new idol made, was placed in the nursery, instead of in the sanctum sanctorum.

It is already known that the YSRCP employed Sanchayitha Gajapathiraju, and has been trying to directly yield power over the MANSAS trust through her. This is why they had released the GO removing Ashok from his role as the trustee.

The government though, has gotten a great shock from the High Court.

Facebook to ‘turn down the temperature’ by reducing political content on the platform

Share

SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook is seeking to “turn down the temperature” on its sprawling platform by reducing the kind of divisive and inflammatory political talk it has long hosted.

Facebook has been pounded with criticism that it not only hasn’t done enough to curb misinformation and vitriol on its network, but that its algorithm actually tended to encourage such posts because of the attention they grab.

The social media giant will no longer recommend politics-themed groups to users, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday, making permanent a measure put in place during the combative US election won by President Joe Biden.

The Silicon Valley-based internet giant is also working on ways to reduce the amount of political content served up in users’ news feeds by its automated systems.

“We’re still going to enable people to engage in political groups and discussions if they want to,” Zuckerberg said.

But he added the decision to reduce political content in users’ main news feeds is part of a push “to turn down the temperature and discourage divisive conversation.”

The social media giant has long been a fertile ground for users to tangle over opposing views or surround themselves with those who agree emphatically.

“But one of the top pieces of feedback that we are hearing from our community right now is that people don’t want politics and fighting to take over their experience on our services,” Zuckerberg said in an earnings call.

“We plan to keep civic and political groups out of recommendations for the long term and we plan to expand that policy globally,” he added.

Trump ban to stand?

These moves come as Facebook wrangles with whether former president Donald Trump’s suspension from the network for “fomenting insurrection” should stand.

Facebook and Instagram barred Trump after his supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, an attack on the seat of US democracy that led to Trump’s unprecedented second impeachment.

The platform is referring the matter to its independent oversight board, which is tasked with making final decisions on appeals regarding what is removed or allowed to remain on the world’s biggest social network.

“We believe our decision was necessary and right,” Facebook vice president of global affairs Nick Clegg said in a blog post at the time.

Members of the oversight board come from various countries and include jurists, human rights activists, journalists, a Nobel Peace laureate and a former Danish prime minister.

Reaction to the Trump ban has ranged from criticism that Facebook should have booted him long ago to outrage over his online voice being muted.

Facebook’s stance was never meant to mean “that politicians can say whatever they like,” Clegg said.

Healthful vs Hurtful

Facebook updated its mission a few years ago, from connecting the world to “bringing the world closer together.”

Letting people create groups devoted to topics, hobbies, ideas or interests was touted as enabling people to get to know one another in virtual clubhouses.

More than 600 million of Facebook’s approximately 2.6 billion monthly users take part in groups, according to Zuckerberg.

“Our product focus now is to develop this community infrastructure beyond feeds and message boards to help people build and run full self-sustaining community institutions,” he said.

“As we continue to focus on this, we need to make sure that the communities people connect with are healthy and positive.”

Part of that effort involves building tools such as messaging and video chat into groups, and creating ways for groups to raise money from donations, membership fees, or merchandise sales, according to the Facebook chief.

It also means taking down groups that break Facebook rules about promoting violence or hate, Zuckerberg said, noting that the social network has removed more than a million groups for policy violations in the past year.

Unions hopeful of KCR rejecting 7.5% fitment recommendation

Share

HYDERABAD: Criticising the Pay Revision Commission of Telangana government, the State government employees’ unions said that they will not accept fitment below 43 per cent of basic pay. Speaking to media on Wednesday night after a meeting took place in the Secretariat between representatives of various unions and Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, TNGO president Mamilla Rajender expressed confidence that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will not accept the PRC recommendation and will give a favourable fitment for the around 9.35 lakh employees.

Rajender said that the PRC is just an advisory committee and its recommendation is not binding. He gave example of how during the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government, the PRC had recommended 29 per cent
fitment but after the employees rejected it, the State government increased it to 43 per cent. Expressing shock over the recommendation of the PRC headed by retired bureaucrat CR Biswal, the TNGO president said, “We are unable to digest the fact that the PRC recommended fitment of 7.5 percent. This would in fact reduce our pay. How did the Committee even arrive at this number. This is humiliating.”“We participated in the Telangana statehood agitation and succeeded in achieving the State. We will succeed in achieving a better pay as well,” he added.

Protestors held

Earlier in the day members of various State government employees’ unions held a protest near the Secretariat, where the security was heightened to avoid any untoward circumstances. Around 30 protesters were taken under preventive custody by the police. Both, the Congress and BJP lambasted the State government over the PRC recommendation of 7.5 per cent fitment. BJP State president Bandi Sanjay in his statement pointed out that the salaries of employees who have 30 per cent CPS will be actually reduced by 2.5 per cent if the State government follows recommendation of the PRC.

He alleged that the PRC report was prepared at the behest of the Chief Minister and questioned if the report was prepared in the CM’s farmhouse. “The CM has deceived every section of society, including the unemployed and ryots, and now government employees have also become a part of the list,” he said. He demanded that the State government give 45 per cent fitment and said that the erstwhile AP government conferred better than the Telangana government as they never sanctioned below 25 per cent.

The Congress leaders alleged that the Chief Minister is drawing highest salary in the State and should have known the problems of employees. TPCC working president Revanth Reddy drew a parallel with 7.5 per cent fitment given by the erstwhile AP government in 1975 and questioned how can 7.5 per cent now be enough when there is spike in inflation. “The present PRC recommendation is based on 2013 prices. It will be enforced for next five years. Is the government in its senses?” Revanth questioned.

England’s COVID-19 infections ‘flattening’ but still very high, finds new study

Share

LONDON: Coronavirus infections in England have flattened with an indication of a decline but still remain extremely high, according to the latest findings from a UK government-backed study on Thursday.

The Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT) study into the country’s COVID-19 infections found that the infections in the general population between January 6 and 22 were at the highest level recorded since last year.

It also found that the National Health Service (NHS) is under significant pressure in England with over 37,000 people in hospital with the virus, twice as many as the first peak in April 2020, and 4,076 people are on ventilators, more than at any time in the pandemic.

“These findings are a stark reminder of the need to remain vigilant. Infection rates this high will continue to put a strain on our NHS and add to the significant pressures dedicated health and care staff are already facing,” said UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

“We must bring infections right down so I urge everyone to play their part to help save lives. You must stay at home unless absolutely necessary, follow social distancing rules and minimise contact with others,” he said.

The levels of infections recorded by REACT varied across the different parts of England and was highest in London, with one in 35 people infected, and highest nationally among those aged 18 to 24.

It also found that black or Asian people and those living in large households or deprived neighbourhoods were more likely to test positive than others.

Healthcare and care-home workers, as well as other key workers, were also more likely to be infected compared with other workers.

The other key findings from the eighth REACT study from this month shows national prevalence of coronavirus at 1.57 per cent, or 157 per 10,000 people infected.

The national R rate, or the rate at which the infection is transmitted by any one infected individual, is estimated at 0.98 with a range of 0.92 to 1.04 and, therefore, still very high.

“The number of people infected with the virus is at the highest level that we’ve recorded since we began testing last May,” said Professor Paul Elliott, director of the programme at Imperial College London.

“We’re not seeing the sharp drop in infections that happened under the first lockdown and if infections aren’t brought down significantly, hospitals won’t be able to cope with the number of people that need critical care. We all need to stay at home wherever possible and help bring the virus under control and protect our already over-stretched health system,” he said.

The scientists say that while the vaccine programme continues to expand to protect as many people as possible, with over 6.8 million people currently vaccinated in the UK, it still remains unknown whether being vaccinated stops someone from passing the virus on to others.

It will also be some time before the impact of the vaccination programme reduces pressures on hospitals, which makes continued lockdown restrictions critical.

“In the latest REACT snapshot across round 8 we continue to see very high levels of Covid-19 at a national level, which continues to be worrying. While we do see the suggestion of a downturn in the last few days of the study, which is encouraging, this is only tentative,” said Kelly Beaver, Managing Director, Public Affairs at Ipsos MORI.

As part of the study, over 167,000 randomly selected people over the age of 5 from across England volunteered to provide nose and throat swabs for this REACT report.

These were tested for antigens indicating the presence of the virus to show whether someone is currently infected with COVID-19.

The study does not go out to the same participants in each round but selects new, randomly selected participants each time to capture both those who display symptoms and those who do not, providing a greater insight into the levels of infection across the country.

Its latest findings come as the UK surpassed the figure of 100,000 deaths from the deadly virus this week to hit 101,887, leading to tougher international travel measures to keep a tighter check on deadlier new variants of coronavirus in other parts of the world.

Britain remains under a strict stay-at-home lockdown and Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the House of Commons on Wednesday that the lockdown will remain in place through February, with schools reopening as the first signs of normalcy a move not expected before March 8.
