Congress Pushes 42% BC Quota in Sarpanch Polls
The Congress government in Telangana recently issued a new G.O. proposing 42% reservation for the BC community in the upcoming local body elections. However, the Telangana High Court struck down the order, stating that such a reservation quota violates constitutional guidelines.
Despite the setback, the Congress party appears determined to implement the 42% BC quota through a revised strategy.
Cabinet Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy announced that Congress has unanimously decided to extend 42% reservation to BCs in the upcoming Sarpanch elections. He clarified that only the Sarpanch polls will be conducted immediately, while the MPTC and ZPTC elections will be held later as per the High Court’s directives.
For the Sarpanch polls, Congress will enforce the 42% quota internally, meaning the party will field and support BC candidates in 42% of the seats. This applies only to Congress candidates and does not bind other political parties.
The move makes it clear that the Congress leadership is steadfast in its commitment to the BC reservation plan and is willing to adopt alternative approaches to ensure its implementation within the legal framework.
