Congress Leads Local Body Polls In Karnataka

Share

While the voters of Karnataka gave a big thumbs up to Bharatiya Janata Party in recent Lok Sabha polls, in an unpredictable way, they chose to vote for Congress in local body polls.

The local body elections to 1361 wards in state were held on May 29. The counting to local body polls in Karnataka, having 8 municipal cities and 33 municipal towns, is currently underway. The figures that have come out till now indicate that Congress is more likely to win more than 50% of the wards.

Congress, which emerged as biggest gainer, has won 90 out of 217 seats of Municipal Council. While BJP gained 56 seats, JD(S) took 30 wards and others earned 33. When it comes to town municipalities, BJP performed better by winning 126 of 290 declared seats, whereas Congress has won 97 wards. So far, Congress secured around 509 seats and BJP, 366 wards. Final tally is likely to come out either on Friday midnight or in early hours of Saturday.

Definitely, these results are not a good sign for BJP, that is looking to gain power in Karnataka by attracting the MLA of Congress and JD(S). At the same time, it will boost the morale of JD(S) and Congress workers in the state.

Modi 2.0 On day-1: Big Move For Farmers

Share

Keeping up the poll promise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who elected for second straight term, has decided to extend the PM-KISAN scheme to all the farmers in India on his first-day at office. Definitely, it’s a big gift to the farmers of India by PM Modi, who had sent signals that he’ll set his major focus on Agriculture sector. The big decision in this regard was taken in new cabinet’s first meeting on Friday evening.

Union Minister Prakash Jawadekar has briefed about this big decision to media, after cabinet ministers meet. When the PM-Kisan (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi) scheme was first announced during Interim Budget 2019-20, it was confined to only small and marginal farmers with cultivable land less than 5 acres. Under this scheme, the farmer holding less than five acres will get Rs 6000 to their bank accounts, in three installments, annually.

Around 14.5 Crore farmers in the country will be benefitted with the extended version of scheme. Also, Goyal informed media that Economic Survey will be released on July 4 and FY20 budget on 5th July.

The revised scheme an estimated to cost an expenditure of Rs 87,217.50 crore in 2019-20. PM Modi also cleared pension scheme (3000 per month) for small shopkeepers and traders with turnover below 1.5 Crore. There will be around 3 Crore beneficiaries with this scheme.

Rakshasudu Teaser: A Faithful Remake!

Share

After doing a lot of commercial films with wide span and big budgets, Bellamkonda Srinivas has chosen a thoughtful investigative psycho thriller taking many by surprise. The teaser of Rakshasudu that’s been unveiled a while ago has proved he made a right choice. As per teaser, the film revolves around a psycho who is suffering from ‘Anti-social personality disorder’ and how Bellamkonda, a sub-inspector, deals with the case is the crux of the story.

Bellamkonda Srinivas looks super fit and confident. Going by the teaser, he seems to have pulled off the role with ease and conviction. Anupama Parameswaran, who is known for youthful love stories and romantic movies, has shocked with her presence in this investigative psycho thriller. Touted to be the remake of Tamil superhit Ratsasan, it is a well-thought-out crime thriller and going by the teaser, the makers of Rakshasudu seems to have hit the bull’s eye.

The teaser scores in both creative as well technical aspects. Performances seem to be intense. Dialogues are simple yet touching. Director Ramesh Varma seems to have done good job. Ghibran’s background score works. Produced by Havish, Satyanarayana Koneru and released by Abhishek Nama on Abhishek Pictures, Rakshasudu is all set for July 18.

Upcoming Hero Goes Crazy: Removes Shirt On Stage

Share

What to do to get some craze on the stage? Either bash the audiences and critics like Vijay Deverakonda in slang or take a class to everyone like an Allu Arjun. Or, remove your shirt like in the good olden times where Salman Khan did that umpteen times.

Here comes RX100 fame hero Karthikeya who has scored a runway with his second film, while his debut film is dud that many doesn’t even know its name. And last night, at the pre-release event of his upcoming film Hippi, the hero danced like crazy on the stage and in his final act, removed the shirt, and has thrown it away.

Generally, some heroes do such acts inside the film to showcase their six-pack bodies, but it looks like Karthikeya wanted to hype the film from now itself. While the trailer of the film hasn’t got much response, it looks like the hero is hellbent on bringing attention to the film this way.

But one thing we have to say, the likes of heroes Nithin and Kalyan Ram have done six packs and flashed their bodies, but those films didn’t work due to lack of content. Hope Karthikeya is making note of that.

Taapsee splurges on a three-bedroom pad

Two years ago, Taapsee Pannu had gifted herself a three-bedroom apartment in a Mumbai suburb, which she moved into last year, a swanky, custom-made vanity van and a luxury car.

We have now learnt that she has bought another three-bedroom apartment in the same building.

“When Taapsee heard that another apartment in her society was up for grabs, she was quick to buy it. Her sister Shagun who had done the interiors of their home will be designing this one as well. They have already started brainstorming on a theme and work will begin soon,” informs a source close to the development.

On earlier trips to Koh Samui, she had bought some lights and on her vacation in Spain last year, she had splurged on decorative items.

Taapsee recently wrapped up Anurag Kashyap’s Saand Ki Aankh with Bhumi Pednekar as well as Mission Mangal, featuring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menon and Sharman Joshi.

Meghan Markle was ‘nasty’: Trump tells UK daily

Share

Washington: Ahead of upcoming visit to the UK, Ireland and France next week, US President Donald Trump told a British daily that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was “nasty” in response to her 2016 comment where she called Trump “misogynistic”.

Trump, in his Oval Office interview with the Sun newspaper published on Friday, weighed in on everything from outgoing UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s handling of Brexit to the contenders vying to replace her to Markle’s dislike of his politics, CNN reported.

During the interview, Trump was confronted by the comments made by Markle ahead of the 2016 US presidential election where she said on “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore” that Trump was misogynistic and that his politics was divisive. The then actress added that she would move to Canada if he won the presidency.

Trump responded: “I didn’t know that she was nasty. I hope she is OK…”

He seemed to bury the hatchet saying: “I am sure she will go excellently (as a royal). She will be very good.”

Regarding Brexit, Trump criticized May’s efforts, saying he thought that “the UK allowed the European Union to have all the cards”.

May will formally step down as Conservative Party leader on June 7 after all her withdrawal agreements were disagreed by her Cabinet members, forcing her to resign from office.

“I had mentioned to Theresa that you have got to build up your ammunition… I am sure that you could have built up a big advantage for your side and negotiated from strength.

“And it is very hard to play well when one side has all the advantage… They had nothing to lose. They didn’t give the European Union anything to lose.”

However, he acknowledged, “at the same time, I respect Theresa and she would certainly know the facts a lot better than I know them”.

May’s resignation will trigger a party leadership contest, and once a new party leader is in place she will no longer be Prime Minister, a process that could take weeks, if not months, CNN reported.

Trump expressed his support for former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, calling him “a very good guy, a very talented person”.

“I think Boris would do a very good job,” the President told The Sun. “I think he would be excellent.”

He also showed favour for British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt. “Yup, I like him,” Trump added.

Jagan stops all work on Polavaram Project

Share

The YSRC government on Friday suspended all works at the Polavaram Project site.As chief minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy was not in favour of the state government meeting the project construction expenditure, the government directed contractors and officials to stop the ongoing works.

The officials have started looking into the bills paid by the state government in the last four years and the progress of the works at the project site.

The work is likely to resume only after the officials clear the verification of bills. The officials have also asked the water resources department to submit the reports on the bills paid to the contractors.

It is said that the government is also planning to change the contractor if there are any irregularities reported in the work.

Meanwhile, the Polavaram Project Authority, which is visiting the project area and the rehabilitation area, visited the project site on Friday. PPA chief executive officer R K Jain along with senior officials inspected the project work, including the copper dam, diaphragm wall, gates and other activities of the project.

They also enquired about the rehabilitation and resettlement completed so far for the displaced families in the project area.

The PPA had directed the officials to stop work on the copper dam construction till further orders.

The PPA feared that several villages would get submerged in the project if the copper dam is completed. The PPA CEO had reportedly expressed displeasure over the non-completion of the rehabilitation and resettlement for the displaced families as per the Act.

Can Jr NTR resurrect TDP by 2024?

Share

Ever since the Telugu Desam Party faced a humiliating defeat in the recent assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, there has been a demand from within and outside the party circles that it was time to bring young blood into the party, especially popular actors like Jr N T Rama Rao.

The talk has picked up momentum after Jr NTR came to NTR ghat on May 28 to pay homage to his grandfather and TDP founder N T Rama Rao on the latter’s birth anniversary. He issued big advertisements in the newspapers praising NTR and also instructed his followers to take up the responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness at NTR ghat regularly.

It was YSR Congress party MLA Kodali Nani who said only Junior NTR could save the TDP and if he did not do it, the party would disappear soon.Adding to this bandwagon was the tweet of maverick film director Ram Gopal Varma who also suggested that it was time Jr NTR take over the TDP.

“If Tarak does that, all people will immediately forget TDP’s disastrous failure. NTR’s grandson can be the only saviour and if he has any respect for his grandfather he should immoderately save TDP Jai NTR Jai TARAK,” he tweeted. He further said if Jr NTR had any respect for his grandfather, he should save the TDP founded by NTR “from the man who backstabbed him then and his son who is front-stabbing it now.”

However, one wonders whether Jr NTR would take such a risk, especially after seeing the fate of Jana Sena Party president and popular actor Pawan Kalyan.Jr NTR might draw huge crowds to his meetings once again, but they would not vote for the TDP just because of him.

In fact, Jr NTR campaigned for the TDP in 2009 itself, but he could hardly make any impact on its prospects, as it lost the elections for a second successive term. But who knows, Jr NTR might even take that risk and take a plunge into politics. Whether Naidu would tolerate him is a million dollar question.

Amaravati not a priority for Jagan?

Share

It looks like construction of new capital city Amaravati is not the priority list of YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who assumed charge on Thursday.

Jagan, who had interacted with senior officials of the government, said Amaravati works could wait, as he had other priorities in mind, especially implementation of his nine promises – Nava Ratnaalu.

“We already have an interim secretariat and interim high court, which are in good condition. We can happily work from these buildings and there is no need to borrow huge funds from external agencies and take up the works on war footing,” he is understood to have told the officials.

If the chief minister has his way, the works on the ongoing construction of permanent secretariat, permanent assembly building and high court could be stopped until further orders.

Jagan would soon have a meeting with the officials of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) and take a call on what to continue and what not among the given constructions.

Sources said the government might give priority to continue works on residential complexes for employees, IAS and IPS quarters, judges’ quarters and legislators’ building complex which are nearing completion. The remaining works could be kept in pending, sources said.

New ‘Sardar Patel’ Shah both hailed, taunted on Twitter

Share

New Delhi: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared the decks for BJP President Amit Shah to become the new Home Minister of the country, messages warning stone pelters in Kashmir, terrorists, Maoists and the so-called “Tukde Tukde Gang” flooded Twitter, while others dubbed it a poor choice.

“Stone pelters in Kashmir, Bangladeshis pack your Bag. India has got new Sardar Patel as Home Minister @AmitShah,” tweeted Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, spokesperson, BJP Delhi.

“Amit Shah is the new Home Minister! Beware all ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’, terrorists, Maoists and their supporters! Your dad is here… #HomeMinistry,” wrote another Twitter user.

Memes mocking Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other opposition leaders also started doing the rounds on the social media.

While one person wondered if Kejriwal fell ill hearing the news of Shah becoming the Home Minister, someone else made a meme of fugitive Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik saying: “I love India. India is best…”

“Meet the new Home Minister of India. IB will directly report to him. AB HOGA NYAY,” wrote one Twitter user.

“Mota Bhai is the new Home Minister of India. All those pseudo-liberals who wanted to leave India, now is the time,” said another user.

“Amit Shah broke the back of terrorism in Gujarat as Home Minister. As union Home Minister, he’ll take anti-corruption cases against Vadra, National Herald, Chidambarams & others to a quicker conclusion apart from handling Naxal & Pak terrorism, J&K & keeping an eye on the party,” wrote journalist Minhaz Merchant.

Shah’s new job also drew criticism. “Amit Shah is Home Minister. What a time to be alive,” lamented columnist Mitali Saran.

“A few years ago, a bunch of tapes came out in public domain in which a man could be heard instructing Gujarat Police to stalk a woman. That man is now going to be a Union Minister of India. #NewIndia,” Alt News Co-founder Pratik Sinha tweeted.

“That man is now the Home Minister of India. Achhe Din ahead for women safety and privacy,” said Dalit rights activists Jignesh Mevani.

Called the “Chanakya” of modern day Indian politics, Shah became Modi a loyalist as both were associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since their early days.

During his tenure as a minister in Gujarat, Shah held several portfolios including transport, police, housing, border security, civil defense, gram rakshak dal, Home Guards, prison, prohibition, excise, law and justice, parliamentary affairs and the coveted Home Ministry.
