Sridevi: The enigma continues

Share

“It will never ever register that Sridevi is not there”. Anupam Kher puts the sentiment of fans, family members and fraternity friends in just the right words a year after the demise of the enigmatic actress, who lived the cinematic dream for 50 years.

A regular Sunday morning turned one full of disbelief as Sridevi’s fans the world over woke up to the news of her abrupt death in Dubai in a hotel’s bathtub on the night of February 24. Only a day or two earlier, social media enthusiasts were lapping up her impeccable fashion taste at a family wedding she was attending. At 54, she was gone in a jiffy.

“It is something lots and lots of fans of her, including me, will live in denial of because it was so sudden, so shocking and so abrupt. Yet, the reality is one year now,” Anupam told IANS from New York.

Sridevi’s tryst with the arclights began at a tender age of four with a devotional film “Thunaivan”. There was no stopping her from experimenting with genres, languages, looks and characters, leading her to become one of the most formidable actresses of the 1980s and 1990s in Bollywood.

She slipped into myriad roles – whether the double role in “ChaalBaaz”, as a woman with retrograde amnesia in “Sadma”, a shape-shifting woman in “Nagina”, a goofy crime journalist in “Mr. India”, the warm mother act in “English Vinglish” or the fierce and revengeful mom in “Mom” – as effortlessly as she won hearts with expressive eyes, comic timing and her fluid dancing skills.

The sea of fans during her last journey in Mumbai was proof of the love she garnered over the years.

“I have never seen so much adulation for any actress in my entire career. According to me, she was one of the finest actresses, even internationally, that I have ever worked with or seen,” said Anupam, who described her as “unassuming, real and humane”, apart from having a great sense of humour in real life.

Anil Kapoor, Sridevi’s brother-in-law and co-star of several films, including the iconic “Mr. India”, says there’s a certain emptiness that the family always feels whenever there is any occasion in the house or a get-together.

“Her presence is irreplaceable,” Anil told IANS, and added: “With time, we get over people and their presence… and then there are some personalities whose presence, enigma, beauty, and body of work, everything is memorable. She is that personality.”

Satish Kaushik, who has acted with and even directed Sridevi, told IANS: “It was not only a personal loss, but also a huge professional loss because it is hard to find an actor who is so dedicated and disciplined. I really wanted to make a film and cast her, but that wish remains unfulfilled.”

Sridevi let career take a backseat after she married producer Boney Kapoor, and focussed on being a mother to daughters Janhvi and Khushi, before facing the cameras again with “English Vinglish”. Her comeback was a rare success for a female actor in Indian cinema.

The film’s director, Gauri Shinde, recounted Sridevi’s “mad laughter and her pure childlike innocence” on an emotional note.

“The most special memory of her is of having the honour to have directed the most magnificent actress on earth… to have held her hand, to have hugged her and felt the warmth that is so special,” Shinde told IANS.

Actor Adil Hussain, who played Sridevi’s husband in the film, said she was often the centre of attraction in a room because of her presence and beauty, but Sridevi would make herself almost non-existent so that she could absorb the world silently.

“Doing that for an actress of her stature is tough. But it’s something she managed. She was a true actress who loved her art… She was a simple, humble, quiet individual who was a brilliant actress that the nation loved.”

Five years after her “English Vinglish”, Sridevi gave a power-packed performance with Ravi Udyawar’s “Mom”.

Udyawar, who is glad about having explored a different side of the actress in a revenge drama, wanted to do a comedy film with her.

“We were starting a new chapter to explore the actress in her that the world didn’t see before. But things got over and finished even before we imagined.”

No woman in T Cabinet! ‘can’t change my dad’s mind’

Share

For a while now, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has been facing criticism for keeping women out of his Cabinet. This time too, the Cabinet is devoid of any women representation. Moreover, a Cabinet minister’s comments that “women belong in home” has made it worse.

Amid such circumstances, Nizamabad MP and Chief Minister’s daughter K. Kavitha came under attack for being the only “woman” from KCR’s family to have political representation. However, when questioned about the lack of women representation in KCR’s Cabinet, she said that she “cannot change her father’s mind or influence him.”

During a summit, she said that “no political party gives proper representation for women. “Whether it is the TRS or the Congress or any other parties. There is no equal space for women in politics. Unfortunately, in TRS, there are only 4 women of the total 85 plus MLAs from the party,” she rued, adding that women representation in politics should be mandated.

“I’m a junior member of the party,” So, influencing a senior leader, such as my father who has been in politics for over 30 years won’t work,” she believes. However, several people wondered about how Kavitha could make such comments as she is in a an influential position and as a public representative should make efforts to ensure ample women representation, rather than making statements that she cannot do anything in her position.

Pulwama Controversy : No Olympics in India

Share

Pulwama deadly terror attack has shocked India and world alike. Amidst this, the relations between India and Pakistan strained resulting in the denial of visas to two Pakistani sports persons.

In a fresh move, two Pakistani players who are due to compete in New Delhi have been denied visas by India. The denial of entry visas for two shooters who are supposed to take part in a World Cup event in Indian capital New Delhi this weekend has invited the wrath of International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC has barred the India from hosting future sporting events and Olympic-related events. The IOC said the denial of visas for sports persons is against the principles of the Olympic charter relating to discrimination and political interference from the host country.

“Since becoming aware of the issue, and in spite of intense last-minute … efforts … and discussions with the Indian government authorities, no solution has been found to allow the Pakistani delegation to enter India in time to compete,” the IOC statement said.

“As a result, the IOC Executive Board also decided to suspend all discussions with the Indian NOC and government regarding the potential applications for hosting future sports and Olympic-related events in India,” it said.

The IOC also urged all international sports federations not to hold events in India, or grant hosting rights to the country for future competitions, until the government had provided “clear written guarantees” to ensure access for all athletes.

The Indian Olympic Association last year laid out an ambitious roadmap to host the Youth Olympics in 2026, the Asian Games in 2030 and the Summer Olympics for the first time in 2032.

‘Wink Girl’ Upsets Lovers Day Heroine!

Share

Directed by Omar Lulu, Oru Adaar Love aka Lovers Day (Telugu) has received negative reviews and most of the audience were left disappointed. The film was released on Valentine’s Day and the wink-girl Priya Prakash Varrier, Noorin Sherif, and Roshan Abdul Rahoof were seen in the lead roles.

Priya Varrier’s overnight fame with the wink scene from the song Manikya Mlaraya Poovi has outshined others in the film. Noorin Sherif, who played alongside Roshan in the film, was hardly noticed because of Priya’s nation-wide popularity.

Noorin, in one of her recent interactions, said that she is not happy with the outcome and she was ignored after Priya Varrier’s wink viral video. She said that she is grateful to the director Omar for giving the opportunity, but after the wink went viral, film-makers have modified the storyline, leaving her to the corner. She also stated that she was upset to see her role in losing its importance.

In fact, when the question was asked if she is ready to collaborate with the wink girl, she said, ‘No comments’. After the bad reviews poured all over the internet, the director has once again shot the climax and replaced the old one with the new 10 minute shot.

Chandrababu’s Wife Bhu Gave An Emotional Twist

Share

For any film, there will be certain scenes that twist the hearts of audiences for the emotional pinch they create. One such scene in #NTRMahayanakudu belongs to NTR’s daughter Bhuvaneswari, who happens to be wife Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who has become Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after NTR.

When the TDP contested the elections for the first time in 1984, Chandrababu, the son in law of NTR, was in Congress party only. He contested on Congress ticket and lost the election to Medasani Venkatarama Naidu who was in the race wearing the TDP flag. Weaving a scene around this, director Krish tried to showcase how Nara Bhuvaneswari would have felt when her husband lost the election, though her father swept the power in Andhra Pradesh.

This particular scene has a deeper thought as family members also feel sad for ‘Bhu’, as she is fondly called, when her husband lost the election. Though her character on the screen says that she is happy with people’s verdict, that pain in her eyes gets connected to everyone. Of course, every wife feels that her husband should succeed, isn’t it?

Bellam Buzz: It’s Not Raashi, But Anu

Share

One hero who works hard and fast no matter what is the result of his previous film is none other than Bellamkonda Srinivas. We have to admire his producers who want to back him irrespective of the commercial outcomes. Here comes an interesting snippet about his next.

Popular Tamil film ‘Ratsasan’ that released recently was on the radar of many star heroes but finally, Bellamkonda grabbed the chance to star in the Telugu remake of it. And now, everyone is looking forward to the leading lady who will be reprising the role of Amala Paul.

Earlier it came out that Tholiprema diva Raashi Khanna will join forces with Bellamkonda to come up with a sizzling output. But latest update is that as Raashi has opted to join Naga Chaitanya’s Venky Mama, now the makers of Bellamkonda’s movie have opted for Anupama Parameswaran. Because they don’t want any dates clashes of Raashi to slow down the shoot.

With a beautiful heroine aboard, we have to see if this thriller is going to be that first big blockbuster coming from this young hero.

Many for Khammam, none for Nizamabad!

Share

The Telangana Congress party is facing a peculiar situation. The party is yet to recover from the rude jolt it has received during the recent assembly elections and its leaders are completely demoralised.

Even before the party leaders recovered from their shock, the Lok Sabha elections are fast approaching and the state party leadership is compelled to start searching for the right candidates to fight the elections.

The party called for applications to contest the Lok Sabha seats and it received more than 200 applications for 17 Lok Sabha seats after the extended deadline up to February 18.

However, to their shock, most of the applications are from non-serious candidates, who have neither money power nor public image to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

Only for a few seats, some senior party leaders applied for contest but they, too, are not very sure of winning but are confident of putting up a tough fight with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.

One such seat is Khammam, where the Congress fared better, winning majority of the MLA seats. For this seat, there is a real tough contest and the party leaders are quarrelling among themselves to get the ticket.

Former Union minister and firebrand Congress leader Renuka Chowdary, PCC working president Jetty Kusuma Kumar, veteran leader V Hanumantha Rao and outgoing MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy are also doing hectic lobbying for the party ticket from Khammam.

Surprisingly, there are virtually no takers for Nizamabad seat, which is represented by TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha.

The TRS won all the assembly seats under this Parliamentary constituency and so, the chances of Congress wining the LS seat are absolutely nil.

In 2014, then sitting MP Madhu Yashki Goud put up some tough fight against Kavitha, but this time, he is absolutely not interested in the contest at all. He didn’t even apply for the party ticket this time.

The Congress party received only one application for this seat from a non-serious ordinary party worker.

It means Kavitha will have a cake walk in Nizamabad this time, too. The BJP may field Dharmapuri Arvind, son of MP D Srinivas, against her, but he may not give any fight in the elections, analysts said.

100 cars gutted in Aero show fire in Bengaluru

Share

Bengaluru: Nearly 100 vehicles were gutted in a fire that broke out in a parking lot at the venue of the 2019 Aero India show being conducted by the defence ministry at the Yelahanka air base. No casualties have been reported till the report was filed.

According to a policeman, around 100 cars were affected in the blaze after one car caught fire. To control the fire, more than 10 fire engines have been rushed to the spot. The cause of the fire is not yet known but sources say it could have been a lit cigarette that was thrown into the grass which may have started the fire.

The fire broke out just moments after badminton star PV Sindhu took to the skies co-piloting the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas’ trainer variant.

Seven ambulances have been stationed at the site in case of any causalities.

The parking spot is located around a few kilometres away from where the air show is being held.

DGP Fire Services MN Reddi said that the spread of fire was controlled by creating a gap by removing adjacent cars. He added that the fire is under control now.

The area has been cordoned off and police personnel have reached the spot to initiate the investigation. No planes are reported to have suffered any damage.

Saturday is the fourth day of the Aero India 2019 air show which began on February 20.

On Tuesday, two aircrafts of IAF’s aerobatic team Surya Kiran crashed after hitting each other mid-air on Tuesday, killing a pilot and injuring two who ejected to safety during a rehearsal for the Aero India show.

Video clips of the incident had showed the two jets crashing to the ground and bursting into flames near Yelahanka airbase after brushing against each other mid-air, a day before the five day event commenced.

Rahul Ramakrishna Tastes Bitter Pill with Mithayi

Share

Comedians never succeed when the turn heroes or lead actors. With the sole exception of Ali, all comedians including Brahmanandam and Vennela Kishore have failed miserably as heroes at the box-office.

The latest comedians who got jolt are Rahul Ramakrishna of “Arjun Reddy” and “Geetha Govindam” fame and Priyadarshi of “Pelli Choopulu” fame

The comedians have turned lead actors with “Mithayi” but much to their dismay the film turned out to be lousiest movie.

The audiences who went to theaters to watch the film yesterday shocked to such a lousy film. People have started running out from the theaters even before the intermission bang. Such bad it is.

Rahul Ramakrishna now regrets doing the film. In a series of tweets, he said that he tried to repair the movie but their efforts went in vain. He even said that doing comedy is not that easy job and promised to bounce back again.

However, he later has deactivated Twitter account.
