Pakistan’s embattled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to file a legal challenge in the Supreme Court against a damning report by the Joint Investigation Team, which accused him and his family of concealing assets from tax authorities.

The Supreme Court is expected to decide the fate of the Prime Minister next Monday. The JIT report, submitted in the apex court on Monday, has prompted huge uproar in the country with Opposition parties and media calling for the Prime Minister’s resignation. The JIT has recommended the anti-corruption body National Accountability Bureau to file a corruption reference.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sharif consulted his legal and political aides and decided to challenge the JIT report. “It has been decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court tomorrow to challenge the JIT findings. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif believes that the report is conjecture and based on assumptions,” a close aide of the ruling PML(N) told The Hindu.

A group of government Ministers are expected to announce the decision later in the evening.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan, who heads the Opposition party Tehrik-i-Insaf, reiterated his demand for resignation of the Prime Minister, saying he has lost moral authority to continue in power. “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should step down immediately and face the charges. The JIT report is very clear. It has established that the ruling family has proved to be corrupt. There is no way the Prime Minister can hold on to his post,” he told reporters in Islamabad.

Media houses also called for the Prime Minister to step down. Dawn in its editorial wrote that from snippets of the JIT report that have been shared with the media, it does appear that the JIT has made a number of damaging observations about the legitimacy of the wealth of Prime Minister Sharif and his children. “The PML-N must be prepared to do the right thing for the sake of democracy. Prime Minister Sharif’s supporters may rightly argue that the PML-N’s majority in parliament is because of Mr. Sharif, but the constitutional position is clear: the PML-N government can exist without Mr. Sharif,” the paper said.

President Donald Trump’s eldest son eagerly agreed to meet with a woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have information incriminating Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Russian government support for his father, according to an email chain released on Tuesday.

The email chain was between Donald Trump Jr., who posted it on Twitter, and Rob Goldstone, an intermediary who helped to arrange the eventual meeting with the lawyer. It could provide ammunition for investigators who are probing whether there was collusion between the Kremlin and Trumps presidential campaign.

“The Crown prosecutor of Russia … offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father,” said the June 3, 2016, email to Donald Trump Jr. from publicist Rob Goldstone.

“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump,” according to the email posted by Mr. Trump Jr. on Twitter.

“If it’s what you say I love it,” Mr. Trump Jr. replied in part.

The email exchange includes at least one error. Russia, which ceased to be a monarchy with the Russian Revolution, does not have a “crown prosecutor” but rather a prosecutor general. A spokesman for the prosecutor general declined to comment immediately.

Financial markets appeared to have been jarred by the sudden disclosure from Mr. Trump Jr.

Following his tweets, the S&P 500 Index slid by about 0.6% in the span of about 20 minutes, although it has since retraced about half that move. The dollar index, the broadest measure of the U.S. currencys strength, weakened by about 0.16%. U.S. 10-year Treasury futures, meanwhile, gained ground.

Legal experts are divided on whether Mr. Trump Jr.’s participation in the meeting with the Russian lawyer could lead to criminal liability.

Collusion in and of itself is not a crime. But if the younger Mr. Trump conspired or aided and abetted a criminal action, such as hacking into American computer networks, that could be grounds for criminal charges. Several lawyers also said the meeting could run afoul of federal election laws barring campaigns from accepting gifts or things of value from foreign nationals.

The emails do not at first glance appear to provide evidence of illegal activity, and Mr. Trump Jr. has said a meeting he later had with a Russian lawyer arranged via Goldstone primarily involved discussion of U.S. sanctions.

However, Goldstone’s statement that the promise of incriminating information on Democratic presidential candidate Clinton was “part of Russia and its governments support for Mr. Trump” provides new ammunition for federal and congressional investigators who are probing Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign in which Mr. Trump beat Ms. Clinton.

Moscow has denied any interference, and Mr. Trump says his campaign did not collude with Russia.

The United States’ top diplomat sealed a deal Tuesday to intensify Qatar’s counterterrorism efforts, tackling a central issue in the spat pitting the besieged Gulf nation against four other American allies lined up against it.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson outlined the agreement at the end of his first visit to Qatar since its neighbors moved to isolate it over grievances including what they allege is its support for extremist groups.

It was his second stop on a shuttle-diplomacy circuit that will take him next to Saudi Arabia, which has shut Qatar’s only land border and is the most powerful of the countries opposing it.

The centerpiece of the visit was the signing of a memorandum of understanding that lays out steps Qatar can take to bolster its fight against terrorism and address shortfalls in policing terrorism funding.

Mr. Tillerson said the deal, the details of which were not made public, has been in the works for a while and included some steps that have already been taken.

“Together, the United States and Qatar will do more to track down funding sources, will do more to collaborate and share information, and will do more to keep the region and our homeland safe,” he said following talks with 37-year-old Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Mr. Tillerson also gave besieged Qatar, which described the deal as the first of its kind in the Gulf, some political backing ahead of his talks in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

“I think Qatar has been quite clear in its positions and I think very reasonable,” he said earlier in the day.

Mr. Tillerson, a former oilman with years of experience in the oil-rich region, began his Gulf visit Monday by meeting Kuwait’s ruler, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah.

The Kuwaiti leader has been acting as a mediator between Qatar and the quartet of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

The four nations broke off relations with Qatar and cut air, sea and land routes with it more than a month ago. They later issued a 13-point list of demands to restore relations and gave Doha 10 days to comply.

The demands include Qatar shutting down news outlets including al-Jazeera, cutting ties with Islamist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, limiting ties with Iran and expelling Turkish troops stationed in the country.

Qatar strenuously denies supporting extremist groups and has rejected the demands, saying that agreeing to them wholesale would undermine its sovereignty.

It does, however, at least indirectly support Islamist groups that other nations view as terrorist organizations, such as the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Qatar has hosted senior Hamas officials and is the largest financial patron to the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Underscoring that uneasy position, Qatari envoy Mohammed al-Amadi signed a new agreement Tuesday with a Palestinian contractor to build eight residential buildings in Gaza. He said his country would continue to support development projects in the seaside territory aid Qatar argues is for the Palestinian people rather than Hamas.

Mr. Tillerson’s arrival in the Gulf coincided with the release by CNN of alleged agreements between Qatar and its neighbors dating from 2013 and 2014 the network says were leaked by a source in the region.

They include a handwritten 2013 deal between the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar to not interfere in the internal affairs of fellow members of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, which also includes Bahrain, Oman and the UAE.

That agreement specifically ruled out support for the Muslim Brotherhood and other unnamed groups that could threaten the bloc’s members.

Qatar sees the Brotherhood as a legitimate political force and has for years hosted its spiritual guide, Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt label the Brotherhood a terrorist organization.

None of the countries involved questioned the authenticity of the documents.

The four anti-Qatar countries said the leaked files “confirm beyond any doubt Qatar’s failure to meet its commitments and its full violation of its pledges.” Their 13-point list of demands in June was tied to those earlier deals and was “fully in line with the spirit of what was agreed upon,” they said.

The head of Qatar’s government communication office, Sheikh Saif bin Ahmed Al Thani, disputed that.

“Their actions demonstrate that the blockading nations are not interested in engaging in honest negotiations to resolve our differences,” he said.

Still, he added, Qatar remains open to talks to solve the dispute.

U.S. officials have said Mr. Tillerson does not expect an immediate breakthrough in the dispute and cautioned that a resolution could take months.

The squabble puts Washington in an uncomfortable position militarily.

Qatar hosts al-Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East and hub for U.S.-led operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, while American surveillance planes and other aircraft fly from the UAE.

Qatar is not new territory for Mr. Tillerson. Before being tapped to be President Donald Trump’s top diplomat, he served for years as CEO of Exxon Mobil.

The Irving, Texas-based oil giant is one of the most dominant players in OPEC member Qatar’s energy industry, and played a major role in turning it into the world’s largest producer of liquefied natural gas.
