More than half online users get news from Facebook, YouTube and Twitter: study

fb

LONDON: Social media has emerged as a leading source of news among online users who increasingly access it on their smartphones, a thinktank said on Wednesday, warning that the embrace of free news was becoming a challenge for publishers of quality news.More than half of online users get their news from Facebook and other social media platforms, refusing to pay for news and using ad-blocking, which hurts publishers’ revenue, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) said.

But although free news distributed through social platforms creates an opportunity to reach more readers, it also makes it more difficult for publishers to get recognised and connect with their audience, the RISJ said in its annual Digital News Report.”These things are happening because of us,” Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, Reuters Institute director of research, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a phone interview.”We prefer news in the digital form because it’s convenient but you get what you pay for. It takes money to do professional journalism.”

Facebook is playing an increasingly significant role in the distribution of online news, with 44 per cent of people using it as their source of news, followed by 19 percent of people using YouTube and 10 per cent using Twitter, the report said.Nielsen said that in developing countries, where access to independent and reliable news was limited, there were even more people who relied on social media for news.”Many people in Asian and African countries are using mobile phones to get their online news and in those regions social media is even more important as source of news,” he said.

Thirty-six percent of people preferred news to be selected for them by algorithms compared with 30 per cent who relied on editors or journalists, although some feared missing key information or challenging viewpoints, the report said. For the first time social media has overtaken television as the main source of news for 18 to 24-year-olds, with 28 per cent of them citing social media as their main source of news compared with 24 per cent who said they watched news on television.

More than half of the respondents said they were using smartphones to access news, with highest levels in Sweden (69 per cent), Korea (66 per cent) and Switzerland (61 per cent), the study said.In Britain and the United States the use of smartphones to access the news has for the first time overtaken computers and laptops. The survey was carried out online in 26 countries in Europe, Asia, North America and South America.

I’ll Be The Hero In Climax: Jagan

Share

jagan

YSRCP’s President YS Jagan often resorts to various kinds of ways to counter his arch rival and AP CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu. In his latest attempt to push Babu to the corner, Jagan gave a rather filmy logic to say that even though Chandrababu is in the upper hand now he will take over him in end.

“In every film, villain continues to win until 13 reels. However, it is the hero who defeats the villain and wins over evil in the climax,” said Jagan. “Cheats and liars like Babu can only be seen in the movies. Chandrababu is like the famous yesteryear villain Rajanala,” Jagan ridiculed further.

“Even though the villain takes an upper hand over the hero until the 13th reel, the vexed hero revolts in the last reel and even the people will support him,” said Jagan juxtaposing himself as the hero and Babu as villain and prophesying that he will win the 2019 elections with people’s support.Jagan continued to lambast Chandrababu saying that people won’t tolerate a CM like Babu who cheats the very people who voted him to power. “Chandrababu will meet with the fate of filmy villains in his real life,” Jagan stated.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, won the District of Columbia primary (Washington D.C.) on Tuesday. After winning the final Democratic primary with 79 percent votes, Clinton met Senator Bernie Sanders to find a common ground in the presidential race against Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, the New York Times reported.

The D.C. primary concludes the four-month state-wise battle, which began on February 1 in Iowa, for the Democratic party nomination, Reuters reported. Last week, Clinton was named as the Democratic nominee for the U.S. presidential race after she garnered the support of 2,383 Democratic superdelegates.Through the meeting with Sanders, Clinton hoped to gain his endorsement. It is not clear whether Sanders is seeking “policy concessions” or “political promises.”

Bernie Sanders under pressure

Clinton’s party rival Bernie Sanders is under pressure to give up his political campaigning and support Clinton and help unite the party, but has refused to bow down. The U.S. senator from Vermont hopes to make a point at the Philadelphia convention next month.During a news conference on Tuesday, Sanders said he wanted to push his agenda on reducing inequality, curbing money in politics and “reining” Wall Street, Reuters added.

Sanders aides have signalled that he is not expected to support Clinton “immediately,” CNN reported.”It should be amicable and hopefully constructive,” a person close to Sanders was quoted as saying by reporters, CNN added.U.S. President Barack Obama last Thursday formally endorsed Clinton. Obama, in a video message, declared “I am with her.” In addition, he also said, “tens of millions of Americans made their voices heard. Today I just want to add mine.”

The father of the child saw a 4-7ft long alligator drag away the child. The child’s parents entered the water to snatch their child back from the jaws of the alligator, the sheriff said. However, they were not successful and allerted the lifeguard soon after. “The parents diligently tried to get the child,” Demings added. The child was with his family who were in Florida on a vacation.

The incident took place in Orlando, two days after a mass shooting killed 50 people in the city.
