What is the difference between Sunnis and Shias

Share

Saudi Arabia’s execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr could escalate tensions in the Muslim world even further. Here is a primer on the basic differences between Sunni and Shia Islam.

What caused the split?

A schism emerged after the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632. He died without appointing a successor to lead the Muslim community, and disputes arose over who should shepherd the new and rapidly growing faith. Some believed that a new leader should be chosen by consensus; others thought that only the prophet’s descendants should become caliph. The title passed to a trusted aide, Abu Bakr, though some thought it should have gone to Ali, the Prophet’s cousin and son-in-law. Ali eventually did become caliph after Abu Bakr’s two successors were assassinated.

After Ali also was assassinated, with a poison-laced sword at the mosque in Kufa, in what is now Iraq, his sons Hasan and then Hussein claimed the title. But Hussein and many of his relatives were massacred in Karbala, Iraq, in 680. His martyrdom became a central tenet to those who believed that Ali should have succeeded the Prophet. (It is mourned every year during the month of Muharram). The followers became known as Shias, a contraction of the phrase Shiat Ali, or followers of Ali. The Sunnis, however, regard the first three caliphs before Ali as rightly guided and themselves as the true adherents to the Sunnah, or the Prophet’s tradition. Sunni rulers embarked on sweeping conquests that extended the caliphate into North Africa and Europe. The last caliphate ended with the fall of the Ottoman Empire after World War-I.

How do their beliefs differ?

The Sunni and Shia sects encompass a wide spectrum of doctrine, opinion and schools of thought. The branches are in agreement on many aspects of Islam, but there are considerable disagreements within each. Both branches include worshippers who run the gamut from secular to fundamentalist. Shias consider Ali and the leaders who came after him as Imams. Most believe in a line of 12 Imams, the last of whom, a boy, is believed to have vanished in the ninth century in Iraq after his father was murdered. Shias known as Twelvers anticipate his return as the Mahdi, or Messiah. Sunnis emphasise God’s power in the material world, sometimes including the public and political realm, while Shias value martyrdom and sacrifice.

Which sect is larger, and where is each concentrated?

More than 85 per cent of the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims are Sunni. They live across the Arab world, as well as in countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia. Iran, Iraq and Bahrain are largely Shia. The Saudi royal family, which practices an austere and conservative strand of Sunni Islam known as Wahhabism, controls Islam’s holiest shrines, Mecca and Medina. Karbala, Kufa and Najaf in Iraq are revered shrines for the Shias.

Differential data pricing

Computer_2679469f

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday extended the last date for submission of comments on its paper on differential data pricing, This is the second time the regulatory body has sought views and comments on for framing policies on internet services.

Earlier this year, TRAI released a draft consultation paper seeking views from the industry and the general public on the need for regulations for over-the-top (OTT) players such as Whatsapp, Skype, Viber etc, security concerns and net neutrality.

The objective of this consultation paper, the regulator said, was to analyse the implications of the growth of OTTs and consider whether or not changes were required in the current regulatory framework. This time, the consultation paper is about differential data pricing or zero rated applications and websites — especially as social media giant Facebook is agressively pushing its Free Basics scheme.

Internet activists, on the other hand, have once again put together responses to TRAI’s questions, making it easy for internet users to submit their suggestions on differential data pricing.

“Coming to India feels like coming home”!

Share

adnan

Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir and Salman are concerned about the rising intolerance in India and poor Aamir Khan’s wife was so worried that she asked her husband whether they ought to be leaving the country. And the sad part is that when someone criticizes the Khans even after they made these depressing statements, he or she is still labeled intolerant or communal.

And at the other end of the spectrum, we have Pakistan singer Adnan Sami who has successfully acquired Indian citizenship. When a reporter quizzed Adnan Sami on whether he felt India was intolerant, he replied, “If India was intolerant, then why would I apply for citizenship? I feel absolutely safe in India and that’s why I chose to become a citizen of this wonderful country.”

He further added, “I have lived all across the globe but coming to India feels like coming home.” So, there it is in a nutshell! A Pakistani feels absolutely comfortable with applying for Indian citizenship but ordinary folks born and bred here and made into superstars by the people of India, feel the atmosphere not conducive to the safety of minorities.

Is it the irony that is always inherent in India or is it a case of just three celebrities having a problem with the wiring in their heads?

Nizamabad MP and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha said she would cast her vote to BJP if that party leaders fetch Rs 20,000-crore package to the State.

Addressing party activists’ meeting at Banjara Hills under Khairathabad Assembly constituency on Monday, Kavitha threw a challenge at Union Minister Bandaru Dattatraya and Telangana State BJP president G Kishan Reddy saying that they should fetch Rs 20,000-crore package to prove their closeness to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“I will cast my vote to BJP candidate if their leaders bring that package”, she said. Stating that poor people were more in Khairathabad constituency, Kavitha assured them that the TRS government would regularize their house sites in the constituency.

She also criticized TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu indirectly alleging that the latter constructed Hi-Tech City but had forgotten construction of drainage system.

Prabhas Bahubali Keeps Unreachable Targets

The margin of winning gap between ‘Aththarintiki Daaredi’ and ‘Magadheera’ industry hit collection records isn’t as wide as what we see today between new record breaking films ‘Bahubali’ and ‘Srimanthudu.’ Yes, SS Rajamouli and Prabhas have took the Telugu cinema commercial standards so high which is in fact unachievable for any of the films set to release in next one year, except ‘Bahubali 2.’

Apparently, the Box Office strategy followed by ‘Bahubali’ is implemented as it is by ‘Srimanthudu’ which is now standing in Top 2 highest revenue generating Tollywood films. ‘Although ‘Srimanthudu’ records are more or less in the achievable field again either for Mahesh Babu or Pawan Kalyan but ‘Bahubali 1’ records can be broken only if ‘Bahubali 2’ performs above than the expected scale,’ comments an analyst.

Take it with a silver lining, Prabhas will stay on top most industry records may be for next 5 to 10 years in the name of ‘Bahubali 1’ and ‘Bahubali 2.’ No one can reach that No 1 position until and unless Rajamouli picks Mahesh Babu or Pawan Kalyan or even Junior NTR for his next project. Will this happen? The chances are quite meager.

Harish Shankar Remains in Dil Raju Camp

Share

dfgh

Director Harish Shankar has more than couple of times showed his utmost admiration and indebtedness towards producer Dil Raju for keeping lot of trust on him. After ‘Gabbar Singh,’ no more Harish was into the scale of directing Raviteja or other heroes in 30 Crores range. Dil Raju was also hurried to juice on the director’s skill and agreed for ‘Ramayya Vasthavayya’ which went on to become the disaster in Junior NTR career.

Not to stop here, Dil Raju did not lose the confidence on Harish and the next offer at debated remuneration was on the cards with Sai Dharam Tej’s ‘Subramanyam for Sale’ and this time, Harish was a bit improved as the film stood as above average grosser. Now, what’s next for Harish Shankar? Whom is he going to direct next? What kind of a story and script, he is having on hand?

There are so many questions among film circles to know about Harish’s future assignments. Some sources say, none of our star heroes like Pawan or Mahesh or NTR are not in a position to give dates for Harish, taken his weak track record off late. If he has to climb up the scale, Harish should come up with a real blockbuster with any of our upcoming young heroes before approaching the above three. For this to happen, Harish has no other way than to stick with Dil Raju camp.

That’s Difference Between Ram and Naga Shaurya Movies

Share

that-difference-between-ram-and-naga-shaurya-movies_b_0501160912

The parallel releases of Naga Shaurya’s ‘Abbayitho Ammayi’ and Ram’s ‘Nenu Shailaja’ coinciding with the star of New Year surely needed a quick case of study as both the results stood in quite contrast. While ‘Abbayitho Ammayi’ is declared a unanimous flop, ‘Nenu Shailaja’ is raking the moolah in Indian and Overseas market too. That’s the difference between a good and bad movie.

Coming to the genre, both being romantic entertainers aimed at youth audience why is it the Box Office results are non-identical? Analysts opined that ‘Nenu Shailaja’ has nothing new in storyline. It was the sincerity in treatment of characterizations and presence of mind in penning the dialogues does the magic. Every scene in ‘Nenu Shailaja’ will find a reference in one or the other old hit films including the romantic ones. However, Kishore Tirumala was honest towards his job and that was something new in a Ram’s film.

On the other side, ‘Abbayitho Ammayi’ touched a new, contemporary point of dealing with social networking love affairs. However, Ramesh Varma missed in providing an engaging narration with outdated treatment and ruthless screenplay. Writing was also so pathetic. It’s time for hero Naga Shaurya to analyze his past mistakes and learn lessons watching the clean and neat success of Ram with ‘Nenu Shailaja.’

sardaar-jokes-to-be-banned-on-internet_b_0501160857

Hmm… the Sardaar in our context is not Pawan Kalyan ‘Sardaar Gabbar Singh’ but the subject is about Sadaar community and jokes generally we see in the form of SMS and on internet making fun of Sikhs. Supreme Court of India has taken this case of offending a community and examined the plea to ban jokes on Sikhs. If needed, there will be an appeal for prohibition too.

A Sikh lawyer named Harvinder Chowdary raised a PIL in Supreme Court seeking for a total ban on such jokes. She felt that such jokes are an attack on dignity of their community and violate their fundamental right of ‘Right to Equality.’ Chief Justice TS Thakur reacted on the case saying, ‘If we think that your community does feel bad about it, we will definitely seriously consider it.’

There is a strong demand from Sikh community requesting the Government to remove Sardaar jokes from internet and also provide necessary filters to prevent in spreading of such jokes again in future. Delhi Sikh Gurduwara Management Committee is also reported to have hired top most Lawyer Ram Jethmalani in dealing with the case. They have taken the things seriously folks… no more jokes on Sardaar.
