Back in 2023, when the controversial action drama Animal hit the screens, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap had shared a picture of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, along with a lengthy note praising him. In his post, Kashyap referred to Vanga as “the most misunderstood, judged and reviled filmmaker at the moment” and spoke about his honesty, vulnerability, and openness, describing him as “a person you can actually confront and talk to.”
This post, however, sparked a fresh debate on social media recently. Not long after Kashyap’s message, filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan reacted with a one-word comment: “cringe”, while lyricist Varun Grover simply responded with “No.”
Clarifying his stance in a recent interview, Varun Grover explained that Kashyap’s post was not about defending Animal as a film, but rather about defending Sandeep Reddy Vanga as a person. Grover pointed out that defending a work of art and defending the artist are two entirely different things. He emphasized that Kashyap’s post contained no mention of the film itself but was solely focused on the filmmaker’s personal qualities.
Grover went on to criticize Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s behavior on social media, calling it “obnoxious.” He mentioned how Vanga has often engaged in public spats and even arrogantly dismissed veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar, claiming that Akhtar “cannot write or doesn’t have a sense of writing.” Grover said his comment “No” was directed at Kashyap’s attempt to shield the filmmaker’s conduct rather than critique the film.
Following this exchange, Anurag Kashyap reportedly called Grover directly to discuss his reaction. According to Grover, Kashyap understood his point and even agreed with the logic behind his objection. Grover added that Kashyap, being a person with a clean heart and clarity of thought, has since had several discussions with him on the topic, reflecting on the nuances of the situation.
