Sankranthi 2026 Gives Telugu Films a Free Run at Box Office

Sankranthi 2026 has turned out to be a highly rewarding season for the Telugu film industry, with three films emerging as clear box-office successes and another earning positive critical acclaim. Collectively, the five films released during the festive period have generated an impressive overall gross.
With the festive rush now behind us, the Telugu release calendar has slowed down considerably. There are no major releases scheduled for this Friday, as the film that was initially planned for release has been postponed to the end of the month.
Tharun Bhascker and Eesha Rebba’s Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Shantiha will now arrive in theatres on January 30, instead of its earlier announced release date of January 23.
As a result, the Sankranthi releases will enjoy a free run at the box office for the next two weeks, facing no significant competition. Films like Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu now have a clear opportunity to move firmly into the profit zone, while Nari Nari Naduma Murari is also well positioned to conclude its theatrical run on a profitable note.
Telugu Films Create New Records at North America Box Office

The North American box office has witnessed two major milestones with recent Telugu releases, once again highlighting the strong overseas pull of Telugu cinema.
Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu has crossed the $3 million mark in North America, emerging as the biggest overseas grosser in the careers of Megastar Chiranjeevi and director Anil Ravipudi. The film has also registered the highest-ever North American collection for a senior hero. Backed by strong word of mouth, it is expected to enjoy a steady and healthy run in its second week as well.
Meanwhile, Anaganaga Oka Raju is set to cross the $1.5 million milestone in North America today, marking a significant achievement for Naveen Polishetty. With this, the actor records a hat-trick of $1 million-plus films overseas and back-to-back $1.5 million grossers. Among actors of his generation, only Nani has managed to achieve a similar feat.
With these impressive results, Naveen Polishetty has further strengthened his overseas market, while Telugu cinema continues to post strong and consistent numbers in North America.
Tamannaah’s “Aaj Ki Raat” Hits 1 Billion Views on YouTube

Mumbai beauty Tamannaah Bhatia made her Telugu debut way back in 2001 and has since established a strong foothold in the industry. Over the years, when blockbuster offers slowed down, she expanded her horizons to Bollywood. Rather than focusing solely on lead roles, Tamannaah carved a niche for herself with item numbers, quickly earning the title of “item queen” of Bollywood. Today, she reportedly charges anywhere between ₹4-6 crores for a single song.
One of her most notable hits came from the 2024 horror-comedy Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao. Tamannaah’s item number, “Aaj Ki Raat”, created a massive buzz for its glamour and energy. Upon its release on YouTube, the song quickly amassed heavy viewership.
A year and a half later, the song has now crossed 1 billion views (100 crore views) on YouTube, joining a rare club of songs with such phenomenal streaming numbers. While it may not be considered the biggest song in the film or the most iconic item number ever, Tamannaah’s captivating presence was undoubtedly the driving force behind its record-breaking popularity. Composed by Sachin-Jigar, the track continues to remain popular, consistently trending in the Top 20 Indian music charts on streaming platforms.
Chiranjeevi’s 1970s Gritty Film with Dasara Director Srikanth Odela Gains Buzz

As Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu (MSG) marches confidently towards the prestigious ₹300 crore gross mark, attention has once again shifted to Megastar Chiranjeevi and the exciting lineup of projects ahead for the 70-year-old icon. While fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Vishwambhara and the commencement of KS Bobby’s film, fresh details have now emerged about another highly anticipated project in the pipeline.
This upcoming film is being presented by Natural Star Nani and produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri, with Dasara director Srikanth Odela at the helm. Earlier, the announcement poster—featuring Chiranjeevi’s blood-soaked hand—created a strong buzz and set expectations for an intense narrative. Now, producer Sudhakar has offered more insight into the film’s core theme.
According to him, the project will be rooted in a gritty narrative set against a vintage 1970s backdrop, which is expected to add a raw and immersive feel to the story. Given Srikanth Odela’s proven strength with rustic settings in Dasara and the even more vintage-toned Paradise, Chiranjeevi’s transformation into a 1970s-era character has instantly become a major talking point. It remains to be seen whether the film will explore a Telangana-based setting, like Odela’s earlier works, or opt for a more neutral backdrop.
The film is expected to go on floors later this year, after Chiranjeevi completes KS Bobby’s project. Meanwhile, Srikanth Odela is also busy wrapping up Nani’s Paradise, which still has about 40% of its shoot remaining. With such a powerful team and a compelling period setting, this project is already shaping up to be one of the most intriguing films in Chiranjeevi’s career.
Akshaye Khanna’s Dhurandhar Role Was First Offered to Nagarjuna

One of the most talked-about performances in the blockbuster Dhurandhar is undoubtedly Akshaye Khanna’s role. More than even the film’s hero Ranveer Singh, it was Akshaye’s portrayal of Rahman Dekait that struck a chord with audiences. The character’s powerful screen presence, combined with the haunting intro music played at key moments in the film, has turned into a sensation among fans.
Interestingly, industry buzz suggests that this impactful role was initially offered to Telugu star Nagarjuna Akkineni. At the time, Nagarjuna was already committed to playing a negative role as the main antagonist in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie, starring Superstar Rajinikanth. Along with that, he was also juggling other projects, including Sekhar Kammula’s Kubera. Due to these commitments, it is said that Nagarjuna had to turn down director Aditya Dhar’s offer.
After witnessing Akshaye Khanna’s performance, it’s natural to wonder whether Nagarjuna could have brought the same intensity to Rahman Dekait, a character rooted in Karachi’s Lyari gang. Akshaye received widespread praise for his intense acting, controlled voice modulation, and convincing grasp of the Balochi-Urdu slang. While Nagarjuna might not have approached the role in the same manner, there’s little doubt he would have added his own distinctive interpretation.
Adding to the film’s trivia, the much-discussed item song in Dhurandhar was reportedly offered to several A-list actresses before being turned down. Eventually, Krystle D’Souza and Ayesha Khan stepped in, and both are now enjoying the renewed attention and popularity that came with the film’s success.
