Is fear of Jr NTR turning Lokesh more and more belligerent?

Share

What’s behind the sudden belligerence of Nara Lokesh? Of late, he has been very vocal in criticising the ruling YSRCP. His comments have become more strident and his language increasingly baser. Sometimes, he doesn’t seem to even worry about using abusive language. What’s the real reason for this belligerence?

Sources say that the TDP top boss Chandrababu Naidu and his son Lokesh are deeply perturbed by the rising support for Jr NTR’s re-entry. Many TDP activists are demanding that NTR be brought back as the main campaigner for the party. They are showing flags with NTR’s image on them even in programmes where Chandrababu Naidu is speaking. What more, the demand is more strident in Chittoor and Kuppam, the home turf of Chandrababu. The TDP boss has been representing Kuppam since 1985.

To show that he is good enough and that the party does not need Junior NTR to revive its fortunes, Lokesh is trying to attack the YSRCP with unparliamentary words. According to Minister Perni Nani, this is a futile attempt to project oneself. He said Lokesh is doing all these to grab the attention of the people. ‘Lokesh has gone crazy. He is trying to grab the attention by hook or crook,’ Nani said. Chandrababu and Lokesh are afraid that NTR could do to them what they did to senior NTR, he said The future for the father-son duo is very bleak, he said

Beijing: A leaked document that serves as a talking points memo between OnePlus and Oppo has confirmed that OnePlus will become an Oppo sub-brand.

According to The Verge, last week OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said in a forum post that the company will “further integrate” with Oppo, but didn’t elaborate on how that’d work in practice.

“With the merging of both the firms, we will have more resources at hand to create even better products. It will also allow us to be more efficient in our operations,” it read.

UK PM Boris Johnson sets out plans to make country a global science superpower

Share

LONDON: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday unveiled his government’s ambitious plans to become a global science superpower and replicate the success of the country’s COVID-19 vaccination programme.

A new National Science and Technology Council, chaired by prime minister Johnson, will provide strategic direction on the use of science and technology as the tools to tackle great societal challenges.

And, the government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, will head up a new Office for Science and Technology Strategy (OSTS), based in the Cabinet Office, as he takes on the additional role of the new National Technology Adviser.

“From discovery to delivery, our vaccination programme has proven what the UK can achieve at scale and at speed,” said Johnson.

“With the right direction, pace and backing, we can breathe life into many more scientific and technological breakthroughs that transform the lives of people across the UK and the world. That’s why I’m establishing a new ministerial council and office at the centre of government, so we can realise the limitless possibilities that research and technology has to offer and cement the UK’s place as a global science superpower,” he said.

The new OSTS is designed to strengthen the government’s insight into cutting-edge research and technologies and work across departments to put science and technology at the centre of policy and public services.

It will also identify what is needed to secure and protect the capability in science and technology required in the UK to deliver the government’s ambitions.

“The new Office for Science and Technology Strategy will put science and technology right at the heart of policy-making and strengthen the way we work across government to reinforce the position of the UK as a science superpower,” said Sir Patrick Vallance.

One of the first tasks of the Office for Science and Technology Strategy will be to review the technology bets the UK should back and prioritise for strategic advantage.

Downing Street said the government’s successful vaccine and therapeutics programmes have proven how science can deliver “real, meaningful benefit” to the British people and transform lives around the world, helping to protect people from coronavirus and enable societies to reopen again.

“The Prime Minister is tasking the whole of government, working with the new council and office, to take the success of the UK’s approach to vaccines and apply it to other priorities, setting bold visions, acting with speed, and taking risks, which can bring high rewards and benefits to the UK, including in developing technology to reach net zero, curing cancer and not only treating it, and keeping our citizens safe at home and abroad,” it added.

The UK government said it is currently investing GBP 14.9 billion in research and development (R&D) for 2021-22 year, dubbed the highest R&D spend for four decades.

Sweden’s PM loses confidence vote amid housing crisis

Share

STOCKHOLM: Stefan Lofven, Sweden’s Social Democratic prime minister since 2014, lost a confidence vote in parliament on Monday amid a housing crisis and skyrocketing real estate prices, making him the first Swedish government leader ever to lose such a motion.

The vote was initiated by the small Left Party, an ally of the minority government that is not in the two-party centre-left coalition but had provided the votes to pass legislation.

At the centre of a controversy that sparked the Left Party to lose confidence and vote against Lofven are plans to deregulate Sweden’s housing market because of accelerating price increases that took place during the pandemic.

Sweden has strict regulations on rents aimed at maintaining affordable prices in larger cities. However, these disincentives property developers from building new homes for the rental market.

People needing to rent a home can find themselves waiting for years for a contract, and buying property is increasingly hard amid soaring home prices.

However, the Left Party fears that deregulating the rental market will lead to rapid price increases and deeper segregation between rich and poor. It is unclear what will happen next in Sweden.

Lofven said last week he would wait for the vote and then “think through what is best for Sweden.” The prime minister has one week to decide whether to call an early election.

Over the weekend, Lofven held last-minute meetings seeking to secure a majority in parliament for his proposed rent reforms.

On Sunday, he sought to soften the reforms by inviting landlords and tenant organizations for talks.

However, the leader of the Left Party Nooshi Dadgostar stood by its decision to oppose Lofven and said his effort was “a political show.” “We have done something that is perceived as unusual in politics kept our word,” she said.
