Bandi Sanjay upset with Warangal BJP leaders
Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay is said to be mighty upset with the leaders from Warangal. He is said to be upset because of the results of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation elections. He is reportedly unhappy with the performance of the party, which he believes is mainly due to the internal groupism in the party.
Soon after Dubbak and GHMC successes, there was great enthusiasm in Warangal. The party workers were euphoric and they felt that winning the GWMC was possible. But, few wrong decisions have caused a setback. Firstly, putting up Premender Reddy as a candidate for the Graduate MLC election was one such decision. His campaign was both uninspiring and lacklustre. His defeat has left the party workers demoralised.
But, more importantly, the party in Warangal is deeply divided. There are at least three major factions in the party unit. One group is led by former MLA M Dharma Rao. The other group is led by former Mayor Rajeshwara Rao. The third group belongs to district BJP president Ravula Padma. All the three groups are undercutting one another. As a result, there were problems in the selection of the candidates and the campaign. The groupism also ensured that the BJP lost in 10 divisions with small margin.
The party has won 10 seats and could have won another 10 seats. This would have given some respectability to the party in the district. Sanjay, who personally campaigned in the GWMC elections, is disappointed with the performance. He is said to be considering taking some tough actions to set the house in order.
Film Industry Is A Very Cruel Place To Survive: Ileana
Curvaceous beauty Ileana D’Cruz is surviving in the film industry from a really long time. She made her entry in the South and ruled Tollywood for a couple of years with hits like ‘Pokiri’, ‘Jalsa’, ‘Kick’ and many others before flying away to Bollywood. After some initial success, the Goa girl faced some hurdles but is still continuing in the industry with a few projects in her hand.
She is always active on social media and keeps her fans satisfied with glamorous uploads frequently. During a recently shared the reason why she entered this field. She said that everything comes down to the audience as one would want the viewers to like watching you onscreen. She quips that if the audience like you it balances the fact that the film industry is quite cruel at times.
She added, “It (the film industry) is brutal, of course, but it comes down to people. If they (people) like you that is all you need. You just want people to like watching you. It basically goes the same for me. I wouldn’t want to watch a film with an actor I don’t like watching. The minute you are not liked anymore you sort of lose the mark. The industry is brutal in a sense, but it has got so many perks as well.”
Ileana was last seen in Tollywood alongside with Ravi Teja in ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’. Apart from that, she did ‘Big Bull’ which has Abhishek Bachchan in the lead.
UK’s lockdown lifting plan hangs in balance over B.1.617 COVID-19 variant concerns
LONDON: UK’s roadmap to lifting all coronavirus restrictions appeared to be balanced on a knife-edge, with authorities and scientists urging caution amid the rapid spread of the B.1.617 COVID-19 variant first identified in India, which the health secretary says is estimated to be behind up to three-quarters of new infections in the country.
Public Health England data shows cases of the variant have risen by 3,535 to 6,959 since last week.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock told a Downing Street briefing on Thursday that the government had always expected cases to rise as restrictions were eased.
But he said it was “critical” to monitor the link between cases and hospitalisations.
On Thursday, a further 3,542 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths within 28 days of a positive test were reported in the UK.
It is the second day in a row the number of new COVID-19 cases has topped 3,000 – the first time infections have reached this level since mid-April.
“The latest estimates are that more than half and potentially as many as three-quarters of all new cases are now of this variant,” Hancock told the briefing.
“As we set out our roadmap we always expected cases to rise – we must remain vigilant.”
He said the increase in cases was still focused on hotspots.
The PHE data found the worst-affected areas continue to be Bolton, Bedford, and Blackburn with Darwen, which have seen 1,354, 366 and 361 confirmed cases, respectively.
PHE added, however, that there are small numbers of cases of the variant in most parts of the country.
But the health secretary said there were “early signs” rates in Bolton are starting to “cap out”.
Hancock said vaccines were “severing the link between cases and hospitalisations and deaths from coronavirus”.
But he urged people to get both doses, saying that of the 49 people in hospital with Covid in Bolton only five had received two vaccinations.
Jenny Harries, chief executive of the UK Health Security Agency, told the briefing that many of the outbreaks were centred on “focal points”, such as community centres, schools or faith buildings.
She said it was “on the cusp at the moment” over whether rising cases reflected the variant taking off or whether there was a rise because more cases were being hunted for and detected by public health experts.
Increasing cases numbers were not “generally translating into increased cases of hospitalisation and definitely not into deaths,” she said.
“So the key message there is… if we can hold it while the vaccination programme gets rolled out, we stand a much better chance of getting through this session.”
It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said England “may need to wait” for the lifting of all Covid restrictions, which is currently planned for June 21.
Johnson said he saw nothing “currently in the data” to suggest the government would have to delay unlocking.
But he added there were signs of an increase in the number of cases of the B.1.617.2 variant.
Johnson said it was important to understand to what extent the vaccine programme “interrupts the link” between infection, hospitalisation, serious illness and death.
Government scientists had always made clear that infection levels would increase as restrictions eased, particularly the resumption of indoor mixing.
But epidemiologist Prof Neil Ferguson, whose modelling was crucial to the decision to go into the first lockdown in March 2020, said the B.1.617.2 variant meant the reopening of society was now “in the balance”.
“The key issue as to whether we can go forward is: will the surge caused by the variant… be more than has been already planned into the relaxation measures?”
On June 21, the government hopes to move to the final stage of its roadmap for lifting lockdown. Scientists advising the government are currently studying all relevant data since the last set of lockdown relaxations on May 17.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus concedes ‘slow’ response to Congo sex abuse claims
LONDON: The head of the World Health Organization acknowledged the U.N. health agency’s response to sexual abuse allegations involving employees who worked in Congo during an Ebola outbreak was “slow,” following an Associated Press investigation that found senior WHO management knew of multiple cases of misconduct.
As the WHO’s highest decision-making body meets this week, countries were tackling subjects like how to reform the U.N. health agency’s emergencies program after its missteps in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. At its week-long meeting of countries, the WHO held a roundtable talk on preventing sexual abuse on Friday.
“In many ways, we’re all to blame for what happens in these situations,” said Dr. Michael Ryan, the WHO’s emergencies chief.
Diplomats have already pressed WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the issue behind closed-doors. At least six countries raised concerns last week about how the agency was handling sexual abuse and exploitation, citing recent press reports. Tedros tried to allay their worries.
“I can understand the frustration,” he told a committee meeting of the WHO’s Executive Board on May 19. According to a recording of the meeting obtained by the AP, the director-general said it took time to deal with security problems in Congo, to install a commission to investigate sex abuse claims and to get the group up and running.
“The way this thing was run until now, although it was slow … I hope it will satisfy,” Tedros said.
The WHO’s press office declined to comment on Tedros’ description of a slow response but said the commission was “committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation into all recent allegations, including those relating to management actions.” The group’s co-chairs were asked to sign a confidentiality agreement with the WHO.
The panel commissioned by the WHO does not include any law enforcement agencies to investigate if any of the reported sexual exploitation was criminal and its reports will be submitted only to the WHO.
Tedros created the panel in October, after news reports surfaced about sex abuse during the WHO’s efforts to contain the Ebola epidemic in Congo from 2018 to 2020. At the time, Tedros said he was “outraged” and would move quickly to punish those responsible.
But more than seven months later, the panel has yet to publicly release any details about its work or findings. The commission began its work in Congo on May 3 and expects to publish a report at the end of August, the group said.
Many countries said they expected more action, alluding to the AP’s recent story. Nearly 50 countries issued a joint statement Friday expressing their “deep concerns” about the WHO’s handling of sexual abuse.
“We expressed alarm at the suggestions in the media that WHO management knew of reported cases of sexual exploitation and abuse, and sexual harassment and had failed to report them, as required by U.N. and WHO protocol, as well as at allegations that WHO staff acted to suppress the cases,” the joint statement said.
The United States, addressing the assembly Friday, urged other countries to hold the WHO accountable for its management of sex abuse claims; Canada, Australia, Britain, New Zealand and Mexico were among the countries that signed the statement.
Simon Manley, Britain’s ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, called for the WHO to reconsider issues including whether the U.N.’s internal oversight office should be involved in probing sex abuse claims and to clearly explain what the process would be for sharing its investigation results with member countries. Manley said earlier reports “lacked detail” and should have been shared earlier.
“We must from now on see much more transparency from the WHO,” he said.
An AP investigation published earlier this month found members of the WHO’s senior management were told of sexual abuse concerns in 2019 involving at least two doctors employed by the agency during the Ebola epidemic in Congo.
The AP obtained a notarized contract showing two WHO staff members signed off on an agreement by Dr. Jean-Paul Ngandu to pay off a young woman he reportedly impregnated. Another doctor, Boubacar Diallo, bragged of his relationship with WHO chief Tedros and offered women jobs in exchange for sex, three women told the AP.
Even some WHO staffers appear unsatisfied at how the agency has handled the claims.
“We cannot afford to ignore signs of repeated, systemic failure of our Organization to prevent such alleged behaviors and to address them in a just and timely manner,” the WHO staff committee wrote in an email to staff and senior management last week. The committee urged WHO directors to take immediate action over the allegations, including reports that “senior management may have suppressed concerns.”
Some countries told the WHO’s top leadership during last week’s closed meetings they expected more details quickly.
“Now that WHO is considered a beacon to help us find our way out of this pandemic, it is so disheartening to learn about allegations of structural mishandling of cases of misconduct,” a representative of the Dutch government said, according to a meeting recording. “Reading the (press) articles made us doubt whether the many statements and discussions we have had (at the WHO about sex abuse) have been truly heard.”
The representative from the Netherlands called for more transparency to address “the gap in trust that is starting to emerge in this area.”
Dr. Catherine Boehme, Tedros’ Cabinet chief, responded that “some issues are still a work in progress.” She said WHO officials would soon meet with the commission investigating the Congo sex abuse allegations to discuss “the investigation around failure to report or active suppression, including the allegation of a cover-up.”
“We know there are weaknesses in the system, whether it’s the WHO or the U.N. system,” added Dr. Ibrahima Soce Fall, the WHO’s assistant director-general for emergency response.
Some experts said the WHO’s failure to quickly punish those involved in sexual misconduct was disappointing, but not surprising.
“Aid organizations are operating in an accountability vacuum, in contexts where law and order has broken down and where there are no external systems able to hold them to account,” said Asmita Naik, an international human rights consultant who co-authored a report on sexual exploitation involving U.N. personnel.
“Things will not change until those who perpetrate abuse or turn a blind eye are disciplined and conversely, those who speak up are rewarded,” Naik said.
Jagan to set up 16 health hubs in AP
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that he plans on setting up 16 health hubs in the state, spread across various cities in the state, like Vijayawada, Tirupati, Rajahmundry etc.
Officials have been directed to bring up the necessary policies for these hubs, and he has asked the officials to acquire at least 30 acres of land in each of these 16 hubs. Five acres of land is expected to be allotted to each private hospital, in each of these 16 health hubs, for the establishment of super speciality and multispecialty hospitals.
He said that nearly 100 Crores would be invested for these hospitals in the next three years, and if everything goes according to plan, then AP would have nearly 80 super specialty and multispecialty hospitals.
Jagan also said that it is because of the neglect of the previous governments that the people of Andhra Pradesh are now going to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai and other places to get treated for various illnesses.
He said that this will not be the case in the coming years, and said that the health sector in AP will be made much better in the coming years.

SC notices to Telangana in the vote for note case
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Telangana Government in the sensational vote for note case. Congress MP Revanth Reddy, who is the prime suspect in the case, approached the apex court over cross-examination of witnesses in this case.
In this context, a bench consisting of Justice Gavai and Justice Suryakanta directed the Telangana government to stop the cross-examination of witnesses till the hearing is completed. It adjourned the next hearing and ordered the government to reply within 4 weeks.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a charge sheet in the PMLA special court in Nampally on Thursday, in the vote for note case. Charges have been filed against MP Revanth Reddy, Sattupalli MLA Sandra Venkataveeraiah, Sebastian, Uday Simha, Mattaiah Jerusalem and Krishna Kirtan (son of Narender Reddy).
It claimed that Rs. 50 Lakhs was confiscated for allegedly bribing nominated MLA Stephenson, to vote for whomever Revanth Reddy asks him to.

A fake WhatsApp message is in circulation that talks about the government’s control over the instant messaging app. The message claims, “Two blue ticks, and one red tick means the government can take action, while three red ticks will mean the government has started court proceedings against you.” This is false as WhatsApp has not made any changes to its system to inform users about the delivery of messages through ‘ticks’ aka check marks. The misleading message comes amid a legal fight between WhatsApp and the government over the recently introduced IT rules in the country.
