KTR Attends World Economic Forum’s Virtual Panel Discussion

Share

Minister KTR participated in the World Economic Forum’s virtual panel session on “Harnessing Emerging Technologies in India” today. The panellists deliberated on the topic “How can emerging technologies further boost productivity, expedite the growth transition and reinforce resilience to future shocks to meet India’s pressing challenges?”

Today’s session was moderated by Diksha Madhok and the participants included Rajan Anandan (Managing Director, Sequoia Capital), Meagan Fallone (Director, Barefoot College International) and Jai Shroff (Global CEO, UPL Ltd).

During his opening remarks, Minister spoke about the steps initiated by Telangana government to leverage innovation and emerging technologies in various sectors like agriculture, healthcare and education. Minister KTR gave an overview of the various multi-stakeholder initiatives like AI for Agriculture and Medicines from the Sky.

Minister informed the panellists that Telangana is investing in improving digital infrastructure via the T-Fiber project. Minister stated that due to the vast and broad spectrum of economic, social and geographical scenarios found in India, our country is well positioned to act as a global test bed for building emerging technology-based solutions, which can be readily scaled across third world countries to achieve sustainable development goals.
Minister said that Telangana has formulated actionable technology policy frameworks for the state in emerging Tech areas such as Blockchain, Drones, Artificial Intelligence, Open Data, Cyber Security, and Cloud.

Responding to a specific question, Minister opined that Digital readiness has been instrumental for a V-shaped economic recovery during the Covid pandemic. Conventional businesses rapidly went online across the country – leveraging improving internet accessibility. Internet has enabled access to new markets helping first movers to not only recover but thrive during the pandemic.

In his concluding remarks, Minister KTR said that underlying disparities in healthcare, education, financial stability and technology have led the COVID19 crisis to disproportionately impact certain groups and countries. A holistic and systems-based view is required to stress test our assumptions of the future to identify hidden chinks and build resilience to future shocks. The global health risk was one such chink which should now be an eye-opener for governments and multilateral organizations across the world.

Ex-Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu releases TDP manifesto for ‘non-political’ panchayat polls

Share

VIJAYAWADA: Opposition Leader and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu stirred a controversy on Thursday by releasing the party manifesto for the panchayat elections, which are held on non-political basis.

Taking exception to the release of TDP manifesto, the ruling YSR Congress put the onus on SEC N Ramesh Kumar to act against the rule violation by the opposition party.

At a press conference, Naidu released the TDP manifesto ‘Palle Pragathi – Pancha Sutralu’ to develop basic infrastructure in villages and thereby improving the living standards of people. He appealed to the electorate to elect the TDP supported candidates as panchayat sarpanches and ward members for better and cleaner villages.

The two-page TDP manifesto contains five promises — Supply of safe drinking water, creation of peaceful atmosphere, development of model villages and improvement of living standards of people, reduction of property tax by 50 per cent and administration of COVID vaccine to people.

“The YSRC’s contention of apolitical panchayat elections is wrong. Political influence will be there in every aspect of life. Panchayat elections may be indirect in nature, but candidates get support from one party or the other,” Naidu asserted.

Taking exception to Naidu releasing the TDP manifesto for the panchayat elections being held without party symbols, Panchayat Raj Minister Peddiredy Ramachandra Reddy flayed him for making panchayat polls political.

Besides fuming at Naidu for playing gimmicks to show the existence of the TDP in the State, the YSRC leaders put the onus on the SEC to act against Naidu. “There should be no political interference in panchayat elections and it is mentioned in the Constitution. But Naidu in the name of manifesto, released a paper. Was it not against the Constitution. What action will the SEC take now?” questioned YSR Congress MLA Ambati Rambabu.

The YSRC is likely to file a formal complaint with the SEC against the TDP chief for violating the code of conduct.

Johnson & Johnson 1-dose shot prevents COVID-19, but less than some others

Share

WASHINGTON: Johnson & Johnson’s long-awaited vaccine appears to protect against COVID-19 with just one shot – not as strong as some two-shot rivals but still potentially helpful for a world in dire need of more doses.

J&J said Friday that in the U.S. and seven other countries, the single-shot vaccine was 66% effective overall at preventing moderate to severe illness, and much more protective — 85% — against the most serious symptoms.

There was some geographic variation. The vaccine worked better in the U.S. — 72% effective against moderate to severe COVID-19 – compared to 57% in South Africa, where it was up against an easier-to-spread mutated virus.

“Gambling on one dose was certainly worthwhile,” Dr. Mathai Mammen, global research chief for J&J’s Janssen Pharmaceutical unit, told The Associated Press.

With vaccinations off to a rocky start globally, experts had been counting on a one-dose vaccine that would stretch scarce supplies and avoid the logistics nightmare of getting people to return for boosters.

But with some other competing vaccines shown to be 95% effective after two doses, at question is whether somewhat less protection is an acceptable tradeoff to get more shots in arms quickly.

The company said within a week, it will file an application for emergency use in the U.S., and then abroad. It expects to supply 100 million doses to the U.S. by June, and expects to have some ready to ship as soon as authorities give the green light.

These are preliminary findings from a study of 44,000 volunteers that isn’t completed yet. Researchers tracked illnesses starting 28 days after vaccination – about the time when, if participants were getting a two-dose variety instead, they would have needed another shot.

After day 28, no one who got vaccinated needed hospitalization or died regardless of whether they were exposed to “regular COVID or these particularly nasty variants,” Mammen said. When the vaccinated did become infected, they had a milder illness.

Defeating the scourge that has killed more than 2 million people worldwide will require vaccinating billions, and the shots being rolled out in different countries so far all require two doses a few weeks apart for full protection. Early data is mixed on exactly how well all the different kinds work, but shots made by Pfizer and Moderna appear to be about 95% protective after the second dose.

But amid shortages, some countries have advised delaying the second dose of certain vaccines with little data on how that would affect protection.

All COVID-19 vaccines train the body to recognize the new coronavirus, usually by spotting the spikey protein that coats it. But they’re made in very different ways.

J&J’s shot uses a cold virus like a Trojan horse to carry the spike gene into the body, where cells make harmless copies of the protein to prime the immune system in case the real virus comes along.

Rival AstraZeneca makes a similar cold virus vaccine that requires two doses. Both the AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines can be stored in a refrigerator, making them easier to ship and to use in developing countries than the frozen kind made by Pfizer and Moderna.

It’s not clear exactly how well the AstraZeneca version, being used in Britain and several other countries, works. Tests in Britain, South Africa and Brazil suggested two doses are about 70% effective although there are questions about how much protection older adults get. An ongoing U.S. study may provide more information.

J&J said its vaccine works consistently in a broad range of people: A third of participants were over age 60, and more than 40% had other illnesses putting them at risk of severe COVID-19, including obesity, diabetes and HIV.

J&J said the vaccine is safe, with reactions similar to other COVID-19 shots such as fever that occur when the immune system is revved up.

While it released few details, the company said there were no serious allergic reactions. But occasionally other COVID-19 vaccines trigger such reactions, which can be reversed if promptly treated – and authorities have warned people to be on the lookout regardless of which type of vaccine is used.

J&J had hedged its bets with a study of a two-dose version of its vaccine, which is still underway.

Friday’s interim results come on the heels of another vaccine in final testing. Novavax reported this week that its vaccine appears 89% effective in a U.K. study and that it also seems to work — though not as well — against new mutated versions of the virus circulating in Britain and South Africa. A larger study in the U.S. and Mexico is still enrolling volunteers.

Suresh Babu calls for Naarappa reshoots

Share

For those who don’t already know, Naarappa, starring Venkatesh is the Telugu remake of Tamil super hit Asuran. The film is presently in final leg of production.
Our sources close to Naarappa unit have revealed that Suresh Babu who is producing the film is not satisfied with the output.
The senior producer suggested some changes in the rough cut and these scenes will be shot again now. Apparently, Suresh Babu did not like the screenplay in certain episodes and called for some last-minute changes.
Suresh Babu is very particular when it comes to output. He okays a project only after he is fully satisfied with the story and it might even take multiple months for him to green signal a project. Even after the shoot commences he is very proactive and often has a say in the final cut.
Moreover, Srikanth Addala who is at the helm for Naarappa is a subtle film-maker who only dealt with soft subjects till now. This is the first time he is directing an action drama with a fair share of violence and bloodshed. So, Suresh Babu is paying close attention to the project.
Incidentally, the release date of Naarappa has already been locked as the makers announced that the film will be releasing on 14th May, a day after Chiranjeevi’s Acharya hits the screens (May 13th).

ACB court gives a major shock to Revanth Reddy

Share

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee working president and Malkajgiri MP A Revanth Reddy is always in the news for one reason or the other. This time, it’s because the ACB court gave him a major shock by dismissing one of his petitions.

Revanth Reddy filed a petition in the ACB court which stated that the cash-for-vote case comes under the Election Commission of India’s consideration, and not that of the Anti Corruption Bureau’s.

This is because paying money in order to get votes directly comes under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Dismissing Revanth’s petition, the ACB court scheduled the hearing of the case on February 8th.

The ACB court has also asked everyone involved in the cash-for-vote to be present during the hearing of the case without fail.
