The Russia–Ukraine war, now in its fourth year, has taken a grim turn for several families in Punjab. Disturbing accounts have emerged of young men being trafficked to Russia under the guise of job opportunities and later forced into military service.

Gursevak Singh from Jalandhar, speaking via video call to India Today TV, revealed that he and 14 others were taken to Moscow on student or tourist visas and subsequently forced into the Russian army without training. “We are stuck here on visitor visas—we have been handed guns with no training. We don’t even have food to eat. Time is running out,” Singh said.

Tragically, five members of the group have already died, eight were sent to the frontline, and six more are reportedly awaiting deployment in the Selydove region of Donetsk, captured by Russia in November 2024. Families back home allege a lack of adequate response from the Indian Embassy despite repeated appeals, releasing videos urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent intervention.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that the issue has been raised with Russian authorities and has once again urged Indian citizens to avoid any offers to join the Russian army, citing extreme risk.

For affected families, the wait for answers is agonizing. Parminder Kaur, widow of Tejpal Singh, said her husband was recruited in January 2024 under false pretenses. “It was presented as a job, not army recruitment. For one and a half years I’ve been struggling for answers. Many youths are still stuck there,” she said.

Pargat Singh, Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, has demanded stringent action against the agents involved and immediate evacuation of the stranded individuals. “Lip service won’t help. This is a matter of urgent national concern,” he said.

OpenAI announced on Thursday that it has reached a non-binding agreement with Microsoft to restructure its for-profit entity into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). The move could enhance the AI leader’s ability to raise capital and potentially set the stage for a future public listing.

In a blog post, OpenAI Board Chairman Bret Taylor confirmed that the nonprofit parent will retain control of the company’s operations and receive a stake in the new PBC valued at over $100 billion. The agreement, still subject to regulatory approval in California and Delaware, aims to balance capital-raising flexibility with mission-driven governance.

“Microsoft and OpenAI have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the next phase of our partnership,” the companies said in a joint statement. “We are actively working to finalise contractual terms in a definitive agreement.”

Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, though OpenAI has recently committed to a $300 billion cloud deal with Oracle beginning in 2027 and partnered with SoftBank on the Stargate data centre project.

The restructuring talks come amid heightened industry attention. Earlier this year, Elon Musk submitted a $97 billion takeover bid for OpenAI, which was rejected. Critics have warned that the shift to a PBC could dilute OpenAI’s mission to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits humanity. “In 2019, my wife passed away due to an allergy. It has been over six years since her passing. She was generally very healthy, but ice cream was something she could never have. Once, when we were in Chennai, we went out and casually had some ice cream. Shortly after, she experienced difficulty breathing. We rushed her to the hospital just in time, and the doctors warned her never to eat ice cream again. From that day, she avoided it completely.”

However, Devan recounted a tragic incident that occurred later:
“One day, my daughter Lakshmi brought her daughter to our home. I was away on a film shoot. Some ice cream was left at home for the children, and after my daughter left, my wife ate it, forgetting the doctor’s warning. Soon, she began struggling to breathe. The household staff called me frantically, saying she had collapsed. I rushed home and took her to the hospital, but unfortunately, I could not save her. The ice cream allergy had caused severe damage to her lungs, making it impossible for her to breathe. I lost my wife because of it.”

Devan’s emotional revelation has left many in shock, realizing that even something as seemingly harmless as ice cream can have fatal consequences for those with allergies. Medical experts emphasize the importance of strictly following their advice, warning that neglecting it can lead to tragic outcomes.
