200 arrested in U.S. after protests
Most of the protests Saturday night into Sunday were peaceful. Chilling new details released about Dallas shooter Micah Johnson on Sunday fleshed out a still sketchy portrait of the 25-year-old war veteran who apparently supported black militant organisations. Police said the shooter had taunted police negotiators and scrawled on a wall in his own blood before he was ultimately killed in the standoff.A search of Johnson’s Dallas-area home turned up bomb-making materials and a manual in which he wrote about military tactics.
Police now believe he had been planning something big long beforehand, and that the two black deaths last week were a trigger that prompted him to act, Dallas police chief David Brown told CNN on Sunday.Investigators believe “based on evidence of bomb-making materials and a journal that the suspect had been practicing explosive detonations and that the materials were such that it was large enough to have devastating effects throughout our city and our north Texas area”, Mr. Brown said. “We’re convinced that this suspect had other plans,” he added.
The deaths in Minnesota and Louisiana “just sparked his delusion to fast-track his plans and [he] saw the protest in Dallas as an opportunity to begin wreaking havoc on our officers,” said Mr. Brown.Also, the White House said on Sunday President Barack Obama will travel on Tuesday to Dallas where he will address an interfaith service in honour of the five officers.

Britain broke international law when it invaded Iraq in 2003, its Deputy-Prime Minister at the time, John Prescott, said on Sunday in the wake of a critical report on the decision to go to war.A seven-year inquiry concluded on Wednesday that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s justification, planning and handling of the Iraq War involved a catalogue of failures, but did not rule whether the war was legal. Eight months before the 2003 invasion, Mr. Blair told former U.S. President George W. Bush “I will be with you, whatever”, eventually sending 45,000 British troops.
Mr. Prescott, writing in The Sunday Mirror newspaper, said he had now changed his view about the legality of the war and criticised Mr. Blair for stopping his Ministers from fully discussing in advance whether the war would be legal. “In 2004, the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said that as regime change was the prime aim of the Iraq War, it was illegal. With great sadness and anger, I now believe him to be right,” Mr. Prescott wrote.
Many Britons want Mr. Blair to face criminal action over his decision to take military action that led to the deaths of 179 British soldiers and more than 150,000 Iraqi civilians over the following six years.

Mr. Prescott added that he backed the decision by Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn — a veteran anti-war campaigner and critic of Blair — to apologise for the war on behalf of the party.Meanwhile, a cross-party group of lawmakers said they would seek next week a vote declaring Mr. Blair in contempt of Parliament for misleading it in the run-up to the decision to go to war.

Facebook offers end to end encryption option in Messenger
Social media giant Facebook has said that it has begun offering an option to encrypt messages – a way to have secret conversations with other users – to some of 900 million users of Messenger, its messaging app.The end-to-end encryption is a system that allows only the communicating users to read the messages. The upgrade will prohibit even Facebook from reading users’ conversation.
“We want people to be able to use Messenger for every conversation that they want to have,” The Wall Street Journal quoted Tony Leach, product manager for Facebook Messenger as saying.“In some cases, these are really fun and casual things like sending emojis to one another. In other cases, these are really serious conversations where you need an extra layer of security,” Leach added.
Facebook introduced end-to-end encryption to one billion users of WhatsApp messaging app in April.Leach said encrypting Messenger is a tougher challenge than WhatsApp because the service is widely used via browsers on personal computers, as well as on smartphones.While on WhatsApp, the end-to-end encryption is turned on by default, with Messenger users will have to turn on the feature, which hasn’t gone down well with a few.
Christopher Soghoian, a principal technologist with the American Civil Liberties Union, wrote in a Twitter post that “opt-in encryption favours educated users who have the time to learn about obscure security settings”.Meanwhile, Matthew Green, an assistant professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins University, who was invited by Facebook to review its end-to-end encryption effort, said he would like to see the feature turned on by default but agreed that this would be a challenge.
“It is really hard to get an encrypted messaging app that has all the features that Facebook wants to work on the web and on multiple devices,” Green noted.Facebook said end-to-end encryption would not immediately be available on Messenger for group conversations, chatbots, payments or videos.
