Home-grown elements did it, says Bangladesh Home Minister

Hours after Thursday’s bombing in Kishoreganj, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan blamed “home-grown elements” for the attack. In an exclusive interview with The Hindu, Mr. Khan said, “I am still saying that these are local boys. They are brainwashed, as it was done earlier [to dislodge the Awami League government], and these attacks were conducted through them, these are home-grown elements. We can identify a pattern in these attacks. The way it was conducted earlier and now have got identical patterns.”

Four people, including two policemen, have been confirmed dead in Thursday’s terror attack. “Two militants are taken into custody and six police personnel are injured,” Mr. Khan said.“Police have done a remarkable job. They stopped the militants at least a kilometre before the historic Eidgah Maidan [field] of Sholakia, where lakhs of people assembled for Thursday’s prayer. The force bravely fought the militants, even while grenades were hurled on them by the militants and thus they [police] saved many lives. Otherwise, it could have been bigger,” he said.

Mr. Khan refused to comment on whether the attack was masterminded by another country. “We are investigating the incidents and we would get to know soon.”

How Media Is Trying To Cover Up Naidu Failures!

Narachandrababu_Naidu_(5)_1511

Whenever there is a positive development in Andhra Pradesh or a major project is announced, the pro-Chandrababu Naidu media gives a lot of hype to it attributing to his administrative skills and his vast experience in delivering good governance. But when there are any negative developments, the same media blame it on the officials for keeping the chief minister in dark creating embarrassing situation to him. They do not consider it as Naidu’s lack of control over administration or his own failures.

Take for example, the latest controversy over copying of the Telangana government’s data to get good rankings in the Ease of Doing Business. When the Telangana government lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Police and wrote a letter to the Centre over copying of its data by the AP government, Naidu sought to refute the allegations saying there was no need for it to copy as it had already got good track record.

His media manager Parakala Prabhakar, too, gave a strong retort. However, when the Telangana government came out with proofs, Naidu government went silent. Now, the pro-Naidu media has started saying that it could be an official goof-up and Naidu might not have any idea about it.

A few days ago, when there was a controversy over demolition of temples in Vijayawada which triggered a major controversy leading to clashes between the TDP and the BJP leaders, the media tried to create the impression that Naidu was not aware of it and it all happened due to over-action of the officials.May be Naidu is really not aware of the happenings in the government as he is too busy touring foreign countries!

Babu Delaying HC’s Division For Jagan?

highcourt

The High Court division issue has got the two Telugu states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana entangled in a murky war of words. While Telangana is hell-bent on dividing the High Court, AP has been largely silent over the issue, adding fuel to Telangana’s ire.On the other hand, political analysts are terming AP’s silence as a strategic move keeping in mind the pending cases on the Leader of Opposition YS Jagan. The Babu government is also stating that there is no need to divide the High Court in a hurried manner as the State’s Reorganisation Act entertains AP with equal rights in the High Court for 10 years.

Chandrababu is of opinion that the construction of the High Court building and lawyers quarters will be a time taking process and states that division or shifting of High Court is unnecessary at the moment despite KCR promising that he will provide the necessary accommodation facilities.

All said and done, the Babu government’s motives behind this strategic silence is primarily to target Jagan. All the disproportionate assets cases by the CBI on YS Jagan were filed in Telangana and a division of the High Court would mean that the cases will be shifted to Telangana High Court and the Telangana government will have total control over Jagan’s cases.Babu is in no mood to give this advantage to Jagan in this regard and he may push for hearings and further investigation Jagan’s cases in the combined High Court itself. Until then, AP government will go all out on its decision to oppose the High Court’s division.

It’s common knowledge that film industry has a dark side to it. While there exists casting couch for female actors for bagging roles, male actors undergo various kinds of extortion. Especially, several directors and producers take/demand money from new actors who wish to be seen on screen and make it big. Since the competition for roles is heavy, money plays major role than talent and whoever pays money would get work. Especially sons of rich people become victims to a few filmmakers.

In order to make their acting dream into reality, these newbies to falling prey to few greedy persons who’re cashing in on the victim’s passion. For instance, in a recently released dud, the film’s lead actor said to have paid some 30-Lakh odd to get the chance. A director associated with the film reportedly taken the amount. The director in the past too taken some amounts from few other actors to cast in his films.

This in turn is affecting the industry chain as whole as many less-talented people are entering diminishing the quality of films. Let’s hope people would realise that these things won’t work in the long run and such opportunities would only be helpful for debut and from second film on wards it’s their own talent that bring them chances.

Antham Review

Share
Story:
Kalyan Krishna (Charandeep) and Vanitha (Rashmi Gautam) are happily married and residing in Hyderabad. One day, when Kalyan is out of the city, his wife gets kidnapped. He gets an anonymous call and the person (Vasudev) on the other side, threatens to kill her if Kalyan do not obey him. Later he is directed to do various tasks with out asking any questions. What are those tasks? What is the intention of the kidnappers? What happens later in the lives of the couple? forms the remaining story.
Performances:
The makers have splashed Rashmi Gautam all over the promotional materials. But when you watch the film, you will come to know it is only to cheat you. There are very few moments of glamour treat from the actress in the film and there is nothing like acting, screen presence etc. Charandeep is okay in few moments but will fall short to impress in the full length role. Vasudev as baddie is comparatively better but is too loud at times. Sudarshan who mostly appears in Short films, generates few laughs here and there but then is not a great contributor.
Technical Performances:
GSSP Kalyan, the debut director is terrible in his first outing. He got an interesting idea for the film but killed it with a pathetic execution. The idea is not novel but can be termed as okay but then the direction is pathetic than the short films. Even scene is poorly written and is similarly showcased. All the actors appear uncomfortable and there is a sense of awkardness in every scene as we are seeing a drama with inexperienced artists. Karthik Rodriguez came up with a poor album. The back ground score is slightly better when we compare it with the music. The camera work, editing are disappointing as well. Dialogues are worse than many badly dubbed Tamil films. Production Values are once again pathetic.
Plus Points:
1. Decent idea
2. Climax
Minus Points:
1. Overall performances
2. Terrible direction
3. Lengthy and boring
Final Say
Antham is yet another poorly made small film. If Rashmi Gautam really has hopes of making a career in Telugu, she should stay away from such stuff.

US war ships sail close to Chinese features in South China Sea as court case looms

U.S. destroyers have sailed close to Chinese reefs and islands in the disputed South China Sea in recent weeks, U.S. naval officials said on Thursday, patrols likely to fuel tensions ahead of landmark ruling over Beijing’s maritime claims.

The destroyers Stethem, Spruance and Momsen have been patrolling near Chinese features in the Spratlys archipelago and the Scarborough Shoal, which is near the Philippines, the officials said. The patrols were first reported by the Washington-based Navy Times newspaper.Pressure has been rising in the region ahead of a July 12 ruling by an arbitration court hearing the dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea in the Dutch city of The Hague.

China has refused to participate in the case and vowed to ignore the rulings which the United States insists are binding and an important test of Beijing’s willingness to adhere to international law. While not close enough to be within 12 nautical miles – a so-called freedom of navigation operation that would require high level approval – the destroyers operated within 14 to 20 nautical miles of the Chinese features, the Navy Times reported. The USS Ronald Reagan and its escort ships have also been patrolling the South China Sea since last week.

Pacific Fleet spokesman Lieutenant Clint Ramsden said he could not go into operational or tactical details but that the patrols were part of a “routine presence”.“All of these patrols are conducted in accordance with international law and all are consistent with routine Pacific Fleet presence throughout the Western Pacific.”U.S. navy officials said Chinese naval ships, and sometimes fishing vessels, frequently track U.S. ships in the South China Sea but it is not yet known if the presence of the destroyers attracted particular attention.

Manila is challenging the legality of Beijing’s actions and claims in the South China Sea – the first legal case involving the South China Sea.With legal experts expecting the ruling to go Manila’s way, at least in part, U.S. and other regional naval officials are bracing for tension in the weeks and months after the ruling.

Australian PM Turnbull scrambles for independent votes as race tightens

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull scrambled on Thursday to gain support from a small handful of independent lawmakers whose backing he will likely need to form a workable government and end a political vacuum after an unexpectedly close election.

There were signs that the instability was beginning to take its toll on the Australian economy, with Standard and Poor’s cutting Australia’s credit rating outlook to negative from stable, threatening a downgrade of its coveted triple A status. The Australia dollar fell half a U.S. cent after S&P’s announcement, which cited concerns the coalition government would be hampered in its plans to return to budget surplus as it struggles to form a majority government.

“I think what the Australian people want to be assured of today is that there is a clear plan, should we be able to form government, to maintain the fiscal health of this country and that is what the agencies are saying is necessary,” Treasurer Scott Morrison told reporters soon after the S&P announcement.

Mr. Turnbull flew to northern Queensland state on Thursday to meet independent lawmaker Bob Katter, a former member of Turnbull’s conservative coalition whose vote has emerged as critical to delivering the 76 lower house seats the embattled prime minister needs to form a new government.Mr. Turnbull’s gamble in calling an election, ostensibly to clear the upper house Senate of what he saw as obstructive minor parties, backfired badly with a much bigger swing to the centre-left Labour opposition than expected.

Independents will have major say

Minor parties and independents have emerged in an even more powerful position, making it less likely Mr. Turnbull will be able to push his reformist economic agenda, which includes a A$50 billion ($37.6 billion) corporate tax break over 10 years, through an intransigent upper house.Mr. Turnbull, who has even faced calls from within his own party to resign since Saturday’s election, will now need the support of minor parties and populist independents in both the Senate and the lower House of Representatives.

That means senators like the maverick Katter and Nick Xenaphon from South Australia state have emerged as potential kingmakers with team members in both houses. Two other lower house independents, Andrew Wilkie and Cathy McGowan, have ruled out any deals with the government.

“I can just say to you that I am very confident, very confident indeed that we will form government, form a majority government in our own right,” Turnbull told reporters before meeting Katter.“But I am of course talking to the crossbenchers as well, as I would do regardless of what our own numbers in the house amounted to,” he said.

Vote counting is now focused on the 1.5 million postal and absentee votes and the process could still drag on for days, or even weeks.“It’s genuinely 50-50,” said respected Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) political analyst Antony Green. The latest ABC projections gave Turnbull’s coalition 72 seats, with Labour on 67. The government picked up one more seat overnight but seven remain too close to call.Mr. Turnbull, even as he searches outside the coalition for support, also finds himself fighting a rearguard action for the ultra-conservative wing of his own Liberal party led by Senator Corey Bernardi.

Google acquires start-up Moodstocks; new deal to enhance machine learning, visual recognition

In a move to enhance visual recognition, machine learning and image recognition technology, Google has acquired French start-up Moodstocks that specialises in recognition of objects from a smartphone. The search giant announced the deal on Wednesday.Moodstocks is a French start-up that develops new algorithms for visual recognition, machine learning, and image recognition technology. It enables mobile devices recognise objects and images. Google will now have the benefit of this technology.

Vincent Simonet, Head of R & D center of France Google, expressed in a blogpost about the possible benefits the company will get from Moodstocks. He is optimistic that the new deal will come handy for several projects like Google Translate, Smart Reply Inbox, Google app and others that use machine learning technology. “We continue our machine learning and research efforts, and Moodstocks is another proof of our involvement in the matter,” wrote Simonet.

Moodstocks announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue its image recognition services soon but expressed excitement over the deal, saying that the company is “thrilled to announce that we’ve reached an agreement to join forces with Google in order to deploy our work at scale. We expect the acquisition to be completed in the next few weeks.”

“Our focus will be to build great image recognition tools within Google, but rest assured that current paying Moodstocks customers will be able to use it until the end of their subscription,” it added. Interestingly, microblogging site Twitter acquired Magic Pony a couple of weeks ago in a move to enhance machine learning that can improve user’s experience for pictures and videos on the site.

iPhone 7 release date, other details: 5 simple features that iPhone users may want to see

Apple’s upcoming flagship smartphone dubbed as the iPhone 7 is just a couple of months away from hitting the stores, and now several details of the device have been leaked, giving us a possible picture of what it may offer. Expectations from the handset are huge as in all iPhones in the past, and fans may want more than just routine feature upgrades.

The Cupertino giant is expected to release the iPhone 7 and its bigger version iPhone 7 Plus in the third quarter of this year. It may come in September, as the current flagship will complete a year cycle in the market by this time. The iPhone 7 may come with several upgrades over its predecessor, the iPhone 6s, but current iPhone users may want to see at least five simple features in the device:

1) Battery: The iPhone 6s is powered by a 1,715mAh battery but it is just not enough? Some smartphones have 5,000mAh battery, so Apple fans will expect at least a 3,000mAh battery in the upcoming iPhone 7.

2) MicroSD card slot: Apple hasn’t introduced expandable memory option while its rivals, including Samsung, have. The iPhone 7’s base model is rumoured to have 32GB internal memory and ditch the 16GB variant; however, most users may want more storage. A microSD card slot will come handy as not everybody can afford the models with high internal memory.

3) Wireless charger: It is not a “must have” feature but consumers, especially gamers, will want to see it in the upcoming iPhone.

4) Waterproof: Some rival companies, including Samsung, have introduced waterproof feature in their flagship devices. Fans will love to see this feature in the iPhone 7.

5) Fast battery charger: Dozens of smartphones, including budget and mid-range devices, have this feature. Apple fans may want this feature in the upcoming next-generation handset.

Apple is expected to release two variants – the iPhone 7 with a 4.7-inch screen and the iPhone 7 Plus with a 5.5-inch screen and dual camera. They are expected to house an A10 processor, iOS 10 operating system, 2GB/3GB RAM, and a camera with OIS (optical image stabilization).
