Democrats stall House, stage protest over guns

Share

demo

Democrats staged an extraordinary all-day sit-in on the House floor on Wednesday to demand votes on gun-control bills, shouting down Speaker Paul Ryan when he attempted to restore order as their protest stretched into the night. The stunning and unruly scene was broadcast live to the world from Democrats’ cell phones, feeds picked up by C-SPAN after Republicans shut down the network’s cameras. The sit-in was well into its 10th hour, with Democrats camped out on the floor stopping legislative business in the House, when Mr. Ryan stepped to the podium to gavel the House into session and hold votes on routine business.

“No bill, no break!”

Angry Democrats chanted “No bill, no break!” and waved pieces of paper with the names of gun victims, continuing their protest in the well of the House even as lawmakers voted on a previously scheduled and unrelated measure to overturn a veto by President Barack Obama.Mr. Ryan attempted to ignore the outbursts and announce the business of the day, pounding down his gavel over shouting. “Shame! Shame! Shame!” Democrats yelled, but Mr. Ryan left the lectern and the voting continued. Then Democrats began singing “We Shall Overcome,” still holding up the names of gun victims.

An aberration in the House

The scene presented a radical, almost shocking departure from the normal orderly conduct of the House. As the night stretched on Republicans signalled plans to push through a bill to deal with the Zika outbreak and then adjourn until after July 4 to shut Democrats down, a plan Democrats furiously denounced as “cowardly”.Republicans hoped to present themselves as soberly attending to business and Democrats as disruptive. Democrats said they would stay until Republicans yielded to their demands to hold votes on bills to strengthen background checks and prevent people on the no-fly list from getting guns in the wake of last week’s massacre in Orlando, Florida.

‘What is scary in a vote?’

“Are they more afraid than the children at Sandy Hook?” asked Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., referring to the 2012 shooting that killed 26 people, including 20 elementary school children, in Newtown, Connecticut. “What is so scary about having a vote?”Rep. John Lewis, a veteran civil rights leader, asked what Congress has done, then answered his own question- “Nothing. We have turned a deaf ear to the blood of innocents. We are blind to a crisis. Where is our courage?”

Publicity stunt, says Ryan

Mr. Ryan dismissed the protest as “nothing more than a publicity stunt,” and in an interview with CNN, made clear there would be no vote.“We’re not going to take away a citizen’s constitutional rights without due process,” he said. The protest began around 11.30 a.m., interrupted briefly when Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, tried to start the House’s work at noon. The customary prayer and Pledge of Allegiance went ahead, but Mr. Poe was forced to recess the House when dozens of Democrats refused to leave the well.

More Democrats join protest

By evening, 168 House Democrats out of 188 and 34 Senate Democrats joined the protest, according to the House minority leader’s office. One after another, they spoke of the need for gun control and talked of constituents who had been killed.Scattered around the House floor were signs reading “Disarm Hate.” Visitors watched from the galleries. A crowd of several hundred gun control advocates gathered outside the Capitol and cheered as Democrats addressed them.

Congress gridlocked

Congress remains gridlocked over gun control, a divide even more pronounced in a presidential election year. The sit-in had the feel of a 1960s-style protest, as some lawmakers sat on the floor, others in their seats.Republicans had staged a similar protest in 2008. Democrats controlling the House at the time turned off the cameras amid a GOP push for a vote to expand oil and gas drilling. Republicans occupied the floor, delivering speeches after then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the House on its August recess.Ms. Pelosi ordered the cameras turned off. Republicans ultimately forced the drilling provision to be attached to a stopgap spending bill.C-SPAN, a cable and satellite network that provides continual coverage of House and Senate floor proceedings, does not control the cameras. They’re run on authorization by legislative leaders.

Although the cameras were turned off Wednesday, lawmakers relied on social media to transmit video, using Facebook, Twitter and Periscope. C-SPAN broadcast live video streamed on Periscope and Facebook from lawmakers’ accounts. Democrats posted the Capitol’s main telephone number, which was overwhelmed, and urged constituents to call and request a vote. They also encouraged tweeting under the hashtag #NoBillNoBreak.Democratic senators joining the protest included Minority Leader Harry Reid, Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who had waged a nearly 15-hour filibuster last week to force votes in the Senate on gun legislation. Those votes failed Monday night.

So, both dad and son are now shooting for their respective films in two different cities at the same time. Since Charan entered into movie industry as hero, this is the first time that Chiranjeevi putting makeup as hero.

Three More MLAs To Quit Jagan Party?

If the speculations doing rounds in political and media circles of Vijayawada, three more MLAs belonging to YSR Congress party might shift their loyalties to the ruling Telugu Desam Party soon.According to these reports, the three MLAs, all from Krishna district – Kokkiligadda Rakshna Nidhi from Tiruvuru, Meka Pratap Appa Rao from Nuziveed and Uppuleti Kalpana from Pamarru – had agreed to join the TDP, thanks to hectic lobbying by Krishna district party unit.

They are waiting for the appointment of TDP president and chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu for appropriate time to don the yellow colour. The YSR Congress party had won five MLA seats in Krishna district in 2014 elections. Of them, Jaleel Khan from Vijayawada East had alrady joined the TDP.

If these three MLAs join the ruling party, the YSRC will be left with only one MLA – Kodali Nani from Gudivada in the entire district. It will definitely be a big blow to Jagan, say analysts.

Mudragada Fast: Who Lost, Who Gained?

Share

MUDRA

The 14-day fast taken up by Kapu strongman and former minister Mudragada Padmanabham has brought to an end a big political turmoil in Andhra Pradesh. Now, political pundits are busy analysing as to who had lost and who had gained politically in this entire episode. For Mudragada, his fast has brought both positive and negative publicity. Coming to positives, he has once again proved that he is the lone fighter for Kapus and that he would go to any extent to get justice to his community. The government was forced to release the arrested youth who were involved in Tuni violence, only because of Mudragada’s agitation. However, on the flip side, Mudragada’s fast has evoked little response from the common man, only because he has been choosing fast as a weapon every time.

Everybody knows he will not die and his fast is only to blackmail the government.YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy is the biggest gainer in the episode. He has supported Mudragada agitation though to settle scores with chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Since he was the only person who could openly support the cause, he has gained considerable sympathy among Kapus. This will definitely fetch him mileage in the next elections.

As far as Naidu is concerned, the Mudragada agitation has dented his image to some extent, though he also earned brownie points for acting tough in the episode. While he tried to woo the Kapu community with a series of sops, he had to act tough with the agitators who resorted to violence. However, he has certainly lost a sizeable chunk of Kapu vote bank. The provocative statements of his Kapu ministers damaged his reputation to some extent.

The jokers in the game are Chiranjeevi and Pawan Kalyan. Though Chiranjeevi tried to exploit the situation by issuing statements against Naidu government and visiting Mudragada, he could not get any acknowledgement from public. On the other hand, Pawan remained completely silent on the issue, fearing that it would harm his acceptability among other communities, if he takes up Kapu cause.
