Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar is on a historic box-office rampage, rapidly closing in on two landmark records—both currently held by Telugu blockbusters.

One of the biggest milestones belongs to Prabhas and SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2, which rewrote history in the North American market with a staggering $20.5 million gross, a record that has stood tall for nearly eight years. Dhurandhar is now within touching distance of that feat, having crossed the $19 million mark in North America over the latest weekend. If the current momentum sustains, the film is poised to emerge as the highest-grossing Indian film ever in the region.

Back home, Dhurandhar is scripting another major box-office moment. Its India collections are fast approaching the ₹800 crore mark and are just a few crores away from surpassing the domestic record set by Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2. The Telugu blockbuster had amassed ₹812 crore in India, largely powered by its phenomenal Hindi version performance.

With strong trends holding firm across markets, Dhurandhar is expected to breach both milestones in the coming days—potentially rewriting Indian box-office history by eclipsing two of the biggest records held by Telugu cinema giants.

There have been strong rumours that director Bobby was planning to rope in Mohanlal for a key role in his upcoming film with Megastar Chiranjeevi, tentatively titled #ChiruBobby2. The project, announced some time ago, generated considerable buzz due to the possibility of a high-profile collaboration between two stalwarts of Indian cinema. However, the latest developments suggest that this casting may no longer materialise.

According to industry sources, the film’s budget has reportedly been scaled down significantly, leading the makers to revisit and restructure the storyline. As part of this recalibration, key characters are said to be rewritten to align with the revised scale of the project.

While Mohanlal shares a close personal bond with Chiranjeevi, securing him for a substantial role is said to be financially challenging under the new budget constraints. Reports indicate that Mohanlal commands a fee exceeding ₹30 crore even for a supporting role, making it difficult for the makers to accommodate him unless the appearance is limited to a brief cameo.

Given these constraints, the team is now believed to be exploring alternatives within the Telugu film industry. Sources suggest that a prominent Telugu star may be considered for the role instead. There is also speculation that the makers could approach an actor willing to take on the part without remuneration, purely out of respect and admiration for Chiranjeevi.

In Waltair Veerayya, Ravi Teja played a pivotal role and was paid a substantial remuneration. However, with financial dynamics now being different, the makers of #ChiruBobby2 appear to be adopting a more cost-conscious and pragmatic approach to casting and production.

According to sources, officials are examining technical and legal options to avoid last-minute obstacles. Nevertheless, suspense remains high over whether benefit shows will be allowed and to what extent the proposed price hike will be approved. On the promotional front, the makers have completed all planned campaigns. The recently released high-energy song featuring Prabhas alongside the three leading ladies has been unveiled as a full-length video and has received strong traction online. With promotions delivering more than expected, anticipation to witness Prabhas in full form on the big screen continues to soar.

Arriving ahead of other Sankranti releases, Raja Saab enjoys a clear early advantage at the box office. The family of Telugu woman Nikitha Godishala, who was allegedly murdered in the United States, has asserted that her killing was the result of a money dispute and not linked to a romantic relationship, contrary to earlier media reports.

Nikitha Godishala (27) was found stabbed to death in Howard County, Columbia, Maryland, on New Year’s Eve. According to US police, the prime accused, Arjun Sharma, allegedly stabbed Nikitha, reported her as missing, and later fled to India.

Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, Nikitha’s father, Anand Godishala, clarified that the accused was not his daughter’s ex-boyfriend but her former roommate. He said Nikitha had been living in Columbia for the past four years and was working as a data analyst.

“My daughter went to the US four years ago. He was only her roommate earlier, along with two others. It is completely wrong to portray him as her ex-boyfriend,” Anand said, as quoted by PTI.

According to the family, the murder stemmed from a financial dispute. Anand Godishala stated that four people were living together in the apartment and that the accused had borrowed a substantial amount of money from Nikitha.

“When my daughter asked him to return the money before he left for India, he killed her and escaped,” he alleged.

Nikitha last spoke to her father on the night of December 31, when she called to wish him on New Year’s Eve. After losing contact, she was reported missing on January 2. Howard County police later confirmed that she was found dead with multiple stab wounds inside the Columbia apartment linked to the accused.

Nikitha’s cousin, Saraswati Godishala, has reportedly lodged a complaint with the Indian Embassy in the US, detailing the financial transactions between Nikitha and the accused in the days leading up to the murder.

According to media reports, Sharma had borrowed USD 4,500 (approximately ₹4.07 lakh) from Nikitha. While he allegedly returned USD 3,500, he later sought an additional USD 1,000, which Nikitha refused to lend.

US authorities have since obtained an arrest warrant against Sharma on charges of first- and second-degree murder, stating that the killing was premeditated. Although some reports claimed that Sharma was arrested in Tamil Nadu, sources later clarified that the detained individual only resembled the suspect and was released after verification.

The accused remains at large, and US authorities are working to trace his whereabouts and pursue his extradition to face trial.

Meanwhile, Nikitha’s family has appealed to both the state and central governments to facilitate the early repatriation of her body and ensure strict punishment for the accused.

Telangana Police, TFCC Join Hands to Crack Down on Film Piracy

Digital piracy continues to be one of the biggest causes of revenue leakage for the film industry. Despite repeated crackdowns and arrests of piracy masterminds operating illicit websites that upload new films within hours of their theatrical release, the menace remains far from eradicated, with several rogue domains still active. Among all Indian film industries, Tollywood has emerged as one of the worst affected by piracy.

In response to recent breakthroughs against organised piracy rackets, the Telangana Police and the Telugu film industry have decided to intensify their coordinated efforts to dismantle these networks by implementing faster and more effective countermeasures to eliminate pirated links in real time.

In a significant move, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) and the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC) on Monday signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enabling real-time monitoring, swift takedowns, and coordinated legal action against online copyright violations targeting the Telugu film industry.

The MoU was signed by TGCSB Director Shikha Goel and TFCC President Daggubati Suresh Babu in the presence of Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to jointly combat the growing threat of digital piracy.

The agreement formalises a structured mechanism for real-time intelligence sharing, rapid escalation of piracy complaints, swift takedowns of infringing content, and coordinated legal action against organised piracy networks. Leveraging advanced technological tools, dedicated teams will work towards the quick identification, blocking, and removal of pirated content through close coordination with intermediaries, internet service providers (ISPs), OTT platforms, social media companies, and app stores.

As part of the initiative, the police department and film industry representatives will hold regular review meetings to assess progress and plan coordinated actions, especially during major film releases.

Key highlights of the MoU include:

Real-time monitoring and intelligence sharing on piracy networks and infringing digital platforms.

Deployment of TFCC anti-piracy agents at the TGCSB Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) for seamless coordination.

Swift legal action on verified complaints supported by digital evidence, with TGCSB acting as the nodal supervisory agency.

Expedited takedown and blocking of pirated content in coordination with ISPs, OTT platforms, social media companies, and app stores.

Use of advanced technology tools such as automated crawlers, analytics, and content identification systems.

This collaborative effort marks a major step towards protecting intellectual property rights and safeguarding the future of the Telugu film industry from the persistent threat of digital piracy.
