Shabbir Ali Demands Clarity On Telangana Govt’s 20K Free Water Scheme

Share

Hyderabad: Former Minister & ex-Leader of Opposition in Telangana State Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir said that the 20,000 litres free water scheme launched by the Telangana Government in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) lacks clarity and aimed at misleading the people.

Shabbir Ali, in a media statement on Wednesday, said that the 20,000 litres free water scheme was being implemented with many riders and it would create more confusion than giving relief to the consumers. “When all consumers are already metered water connections, why are they being asked to instal a new meter?” he asked.

The Congress leader said that the supply of drinking water in slum areas of Hyderabad through public or community taps was already free since the beginning. Therefore, the domestic slum consumers have nothing to gain or lose from the new scheme. However, it would be a burden for the individual domestic consumers to spend for installation of new meters. “Why are the domestic consumers being forced to replace the existing and functional meters with the new ones?” he asked.

Shabbir Ali said that there was absolutely no clarity on implementation of the scheme for consumers living in apartment buildings. He said it was ridiculous to ask flat owners to install individual meters or go for individual registration as they get water supply through one connection and they split the bill amount among themselves.

He also objected to the condition of linking Aadhaar numbers to the Customer Account Numbers (CANs). He said this might lead to intrusion in privacy of consumers. He pointed out that the High Court has recently objected to linking Aadhaar Card to registration of property.

Shabbir Ali demanded that the State Government simplify the rules for the implementation of 20,000 litres free water schemes. Further, he said that the consumers should not be burdened with the cost of installation of new metres.

“Municipal Administration Minister K. Tarakarama Rao, while inaugurating the scheme on Tuesday, tried to give an impression as if the TRS Government resolved the drinking water problems of Hyderabad. TRS Govt did not bring an additional drop of water other than the supplies ensured by previous Congress regimes which executed three phases of Krishna Water project and first phase of Godavari River water project which cumulatively ensured supply of nearly 26.5 TMC of water to the city. As the then Hyderabad In-charge minister, except for Phase-I of Krishna Water, I had played a major role in bringing Krishna and Godavari River Water to Hyderabad,” Shabbir Ali claimed.

The former minister said KTR has repeated more than once in his speeches that when he was a child he used to see protests with empty pots at the Water Works Department office. “It was Congress leader P. Janardhan Reddy who used to organise such protests during TDP rule to highlight the problems being faced by people of Hyderabad. Such protests were never held when the Congress party was in power as it took concrete steps to resolve the problem. KTR has become habituated to making false claims. He must do some homework and learn history before making baseless political statements,” he said. (eom)

Signal to ramp up hiring after WhatsApp controversy drives download surge

Share

Messaging app Signal has seen “unprecedented” growth following a controversial change in rival WhatsApp’s privacy terms and is looking to hire more staff as it seeks to bolster the service and supporting infrastructure, the head of its controlling foundation said on Wednesday.

Along with another encrypted app, Telegram, Signal has been the main beneficiary of online outrage around the changes announced last week, which require WhatsApp users to share their data with both Facebook and Instagram.

Telegram said on Wednesday it had surpassed 500 million active users globally.

Brian Acton, who co-founded WhatsApp before selling it to Facebook and then co-founding the Signal Foundation, declined to give equivalent data for Signal but said that the expansion in recent days had been “vertical”.

“We’ve seen unprecedented growth this past week,” Acton said in an email to Reuters. “It’s safe to say that because of this record growth, we’re even more interested in finding talented people.”

He also said Signal was working to improve its video and group chat functions, allowing it to compete better with WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, and other conferencing apps that have become vital to day-to-day life over the past year.

Signal was downloaded by 17.8 million users over the past seven days, a 62-fold rise from the prior week, according to data from Sensor Tower. WhatsApp was downloaded by 10.6 million users during the same period, a 17% decline.

Privacy advocates have jumped on the WhatsApp changes, pointing to what they say is Facebook’s poor track record of supporting consumers’ interests when handling their data, with many suggesting users migrate to other platforms.

The non-profit Signal Foundation based in Silicon Valley, which currently oversees the app, was launched in February 2018 with Acton providing initial funding of $50 million.

It has existed on donations since, with Tesla Inc Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk among supporters, and Acton said there were no plans to seek different sources of funding.

“Millions of people value privacy enough to sustain it, and we’re trying to demonstrate that there is an alternative to the ad-based business models that exploit user privacy,” Acton said, adding donations were “pouring in”.

Africa to see first COVID vaccine doses from COVAX in March 2021: WHO

Share

NAIROBI: Africa should see the first COVID-19 vaccine doses in March from the global COVAX effort aimed at helping lower-income countries obtain the shots, the World Health Organisation’s Africa chief said Thursday, as deaths on the continent are rapidly rising.

Matshidiso Moeti told reporters that a larger rollout of the millions of doses from COVAX is expected by June – the second major vaccine announcement this week for the African continent of 1.3 billion people as infections surge for a second time.

The African Union chair on Wednesday said 270 million doses have been secured from Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca via the Serum Institute of India. Doses of the vaccines are expected to be allocated to countries based on population size and the severity of the outbreak, with health workers considered highest priority after thousands have been infected.

The African continent is now recording about 30,000 new virus cases per day overall compared to 18,000 during the first surge months ago. “Unfortunately, our deaths are increasing very rapidly,” Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director John Nkengasong said in a separate briefing.

He said confirmed deaths from COVID-19 have jumped 21 per cent over the past week in Africa, with more than 5,400 reported. The continent has more than 3.1 million confirmed virus cases, including more than 75,000 deaths, as a second wave of infections is “hitting very, very hard”.

The case fatality rate in Africa is now 2.4 per cent, above the global rate of 2.2 per cent. Some 20 African countries have case fatality rates above the global average, including Sudan at 6 per cent, Egypt at 5.5 per cent, Mali at 3.9 per cent, Congo at 3.1 per cent and South Africa at 2.8 per cent.

South Africa is one of the world’s hardest-hit countries as a highly infectious variant of the virus now dominates the number of new cases and hospitals struggle. The country has more than 1.2 million cases including 35,000 deaths.

Moeti said that genomic sequencing has now found that new variant in three other countries: Botswana, Gambia and Zambia. “The importance of a robust genomics surveillance system cannot be overemphasized,” she added.

The Africa CDC director said “the sheer increase in the number of cases means we run into short supplies of oxygen”, and he is meeting with the World Health Organization and other partners on Friday on how to increase the supply to Africa, where medical oxygen is not widely available.

Nkengasong stressed the importance of getting COVID-19 vaccines to Africa: “We have to do it quick. Economies are down. People are dying.”

Since vaccine doses from the COVAX effort are expected to cover just 20 per cent of the population in Africa, officials have pushed on multiple fronts to secure many more doses to meet the goal of vaccinating the 60 per cent needed to achieve herd immunity against the virus.

Nkengasong said that the vaccinations “will require a very massive historic campaign” of a kind that the continent has never seen. Already there are concerns about how African countries can roll out vaccines that require super-cold storage given the continent has some of the world’s worst infrastructure.

Nkengasong said African governments are being advised to obtain deep freezers to start the vaccinations at hospitals in their major cities, then to “engage the community, push them, drag them to where vaccination points are”.

Inside Talk: Robin Sharma’s damage to TDP gets Naidu thinking!

Share

Robin Sharma has been brought in to be the political advisor for the Telugu Desam Party. He was previously a member of Prashanth Kishore’s team, the person who was instrumental in making Jagan win the 2019 general elections.

Robin Shamra is said to be the reason for Chandrababu’s comments on Christianity when he spoke about the Ramatheertham incident. However, his speech caused a lot of damage, more than the intended positive effect.

Many christians have now distanced themselves from the TDP, and are choosing to stay away from the party. The intended effect was to ignite pro-Hindu feelings in Hindus. but the speech has had a very adverse effect against Christians belonging to the TDP.

Chandrababu is said to have realised that a pro-Hindu speech might benefit the BJP, but not the TDP,

As a result, Chandrababu is said to be re-evaluating the prospect of letting Robin Sharma continue as the Political Advisor or not. Robin Shamra’s advice has indeed done more damage to Chandrababu and TDP, than good!

Rapaka Varaprasadarao, who won from Janasena and claimed to be a YCP MLA, turned out to be a bad omen for both of them.

MLA Rapaka is facing a strange situation in the Rajolu constituency. He remains close to Chief Minister Jagan and is in favour of the YSR Congress.

He enlisted his son in the YSRCP. He has repeatedly said that he is the leader of the YSR Congress party and that the CM wants him to work in the party.

Despite winning as an MLA from Janasena, the party leaders and activists are angry that he is working in favour of the YCP. But local YSR Congress leaders are not accepting MLA Rapaka as their party leader.

YCP leaders are unable to digest the inclusion of Rapaka’s son Venkata Ram in the YCP.
