ETV Win’s AIR Faces Flak Over Controversial Scene

Share

ETV Win, which has been steadily strengthening its foothold in the OTT arena, recently scored a success with its heartfelt series Anaganaga, which boosted both viewership and subscriptions. Building on that momentum, the platform launched AIR (All India Rankers), a youth-driven web series that delves into the everyday lives and pressures faced by intermediate students.

The series opened to a largely positive response, with audiences appreciating its relatable storytelling, youthful cast, and grounded themes. However, a particular scene from one of the episodes sparked unexpected backlash online.

In the scene, a senior character is seen advising his juniors with comments that some viewers interpreted as promoting caste-based ideology. The dialogue, which mentioned choosing allies from one’s own community and framed success in domains like cricket through a caste lens, drew criticism. Further fueling the controversy was a prominently displayed letter ‘C’ on a board in the background, which some audiences perceived as an indirect caste reference.

The social media response was swift, with many condemning the scene for reinforcing regressive thinking. In light of the growing concern, the creators of AIR were quick to respond. In an official statement, the team clarified that the intent was never to promote caste bias and assured viewers that such oversights would be addressed with sensitivity going forward. Sources suggest that the controversial scene might be edited out in upcoming versions.

Despite the misstep, AIR continues to draw attention for its fresh take on student life, highlighting both the promise and challenges of creating content that resonates with young audiences while staying socially responsible.

The trailer launch was held in a grand manner, attended by the film’s cast, crew, and members of the media. The event was made even more special with the announcement of unique promotional offers. The team revealed that 11 lucky ticket buyers will win iPhones, and in select theatres, a “Money Rain” — where real cash is dropped for the audience — will be held, adding to the excitement.

Ekta Kapoor Faces Court Heat Over OTT Content

Share

Renowned Bollywood producer Ekta Kapoor—known for delivering blockbuster films such as Ek Villain, Dream Girl 2, and Crew—is back in the headlines, but this time, it’s not for her creative ventures. A Mumbai magistrate court has recently reprimanded the city police for failing to meet the deadline to submit an inquiry report in a long-pending complaint filed against Kapoor.

The complaint was originally lodged by social media personality Hindustani Bhau, who alleged that one of Kapoor’s web series on her OTT platform ALTBalaji disrespected Indian soldiers. The controversy stems from a 2020 scene that depicted a character in military uniform involved in a sexual act—a portrayal the complainant deemed deeply offensive and insulting to the armed forces.

Despite the court directing Khar police to investigate the matter thoroughly, progress has been sluggish. The police were expected to file their report by May 9, 2025, but failed to do so, prompting the court to demand an explanation for the delay. Notably, the complaint also names Kapoor’s parents—Shobha Kapoor and veteran actor Jeetendra—as co-accused.

This isn’t the first legal challenge Kapoor has faced. In 2024, she was booked in a separate FIR related to her controversial series Gandii Baat. The show drew criticism for allegedly depicting inappropriate content involving minors, following a complaint by Jabalpur BJP MLA Abhilash Pandey. These incidents have reignited debates over the boundaries of creative freedom on OTT platforms, with Kapoor’s content frequently landing in the crosshairs.

Yet, the ongoing legal scrutiny hasn’t slowed her down. Kapoor is currently overseeing the much-anticipated reboot of her iconic television serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, with original stars Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay returning to reprise their roles. The reboot is expected to run for 150 episodes and is being positioned as one of Indian television’s biggest comebacks.

As Kapoor forges ahead with her ambitious revival project, the legal and public scrutiny surrounding her digital ventures continues to cast a long shadow over her otherwise prolific career.

Venu Sriram’s Thammudu Rejected by Nani

Share

Filmmaker Venu Sriram, known for his commercially successful films like Middle Class Abbayi (MCA) with Natural Star Nani and Vakeel Saab starring Pawan Kalyan, earned the reputation of a bankable director in Tollywood. However, his recent outing Thammudu has not lived up to expectations, drawing a tepid response at the box office.

Interestingly, the script of Thammudu was initially pitched to Nani following the success of MCA. Despite their previous hit collaboration, Nani turned down the project, reportedly sensing a lack of originality and freshness in the narrative. Known for his keen judgment and ability to connect with compelling storytelling, Nani’s decision seems to have been validated in hindsight.

Around the same period, Venu Sriram also developed another script titled Icon, which was planned with Allu Arjun. However, that project was eventually shelved in 2022, adding to a string of setbacks for the director.

With Nani stepping away from Thammudu, the film eventually landed with actor Nithiin, who has been facing a rough patch at the box office. Whether by choice or circumstance, Nithiin took on the project, but the film’s underwhelming reception has done little to alter his current trajectory.

As the Telugu film industry continues to evolve, audience expectations are rapidly shifting toward innovative and engaging content. For Venu Sriram to retain his standing and relevance, a conscious pivot toward fresh storytelling and original concepts may be imperative.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie Set for Massive Global Release

Share

If industry buzz is to be believed, director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s much-anticipated action entertainer Coolie, starring Superstar Rajinikanth, is poised for a massive global release on August 14, 2025. Sources suggest that the film may reach audiences in over 100 countries, making it one of the most expansive international rollouts for an Indian film to date.

Hamsini Entertainment, a major name in international film distribution, is spearheading the global distribution of Coolie. With a portfolio that includes the successful overseas releases of The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) featuring Vijay in over 40 countries and Devara starring Jr. NTR in more than 90 countries, Hamsini has consistently brought Indian cinema to a worldwide audience. With Coolie, the company is reportedly preparing for its largest release yet.

Produced by Sun Pictures, Coolie has already created ripples by becoming the highest overseas procurement for a Tamil film in history. The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes stalwarts from across Indian cinema such as Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Aamir Khan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan.

Anirudh Ravichander scores the music for the film, marking his fourth consecutive collaboration with director Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film’s visual aesthetics are helmed by cinematographer Girish Gangadharan, with editing by Philomin Raj.

Adding to the anticipation is the reunion of Rajinikanth and Sathyaraj on screen after nearly 38 years. The duo last shared screen space in the 1986 blockbuster Mr. Bharath, where Sathyaraj memorably portrayed Rajinikanth’s father. Interestingly, Sathyaraj had previously declined roles in major Rajinikanth films like Sivaji and Enthiran, making this reunion all the more noteworthy.

Coolie, which marks Rajinikanth’s 171st film, centers around the theme of gold smuggling. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has confirmed that the film will be a standalone project and not part of his famed Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), adding a fresh creative angle for fans and critics alike.

With its star-studded cast, global release strategy, and the magic of the Rajinikanth-Kanagaraj combination, Coolie is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the year.
